  • My grandmother once had a debarked sheltie. Yep, they can still bark. He was vicious, which really surprised me, because most shelties are wonderful dogs. So because his previous owner debarked him.... I never heard any growls or whines or anything but a harsh bark. There was no warning when he'd attack me because the phone rang, or some one knocked on the door. Any noise would set him off.

  • it is nice that you love your dog so much that you would rather surgucally take away one of his lines of defense rather than give him to someone who can properly handle a dog who barks. lovely.

  • YOu know i understand it is "cruel" to debark your dog but when you are faced with being evicted or losing your home becasue a dog doesnt stop barking when your gone and you have tried everything including bark collars trainers and other means. then i do believe to be able to keep your dog get them debarked. i would do it because i love my dog more than anything and would not want to see him end up in a shelter

  • @BrittyN89 You are missing the point. Dogs do not just magically become well-behaved. It takes some matter of skill and varying degrees of effort. Nobody just wakes up to an unexpected eviction notice, there is a procedure and time for correction. Likely you were well aware of the barking even before eviction proceedings. A responsible person with respect for animals would use this time to learn how to train their dog. I guarantee I could train any dog not to bark. Watch Cesar Milan.

  • @BrittyN89 youre a straight up moron. get rid of the dog if you can handle it..how bout we cut youre ears off bc we would hate to see you in the shelter.

  • I do agree that debarking is cruel, but I can see where hunney01 and fayrwynds are coming from. If these people are willing to spend out on debarking, chances are they are legit breeders and these dogs are given a good upbringing. the dog dying in shelters are often backyard bred dogs from owners who couldn't be bothered to neuter their dogs. I still don't agree with it, but give me a healthy, neutered, debarked dog over a dog bred from laziness and ignorance anyday

  • Also, what about all the complications that happen later in life? Like scar tissue making breathing, eating and drinking difficult (and in some cases leading to death). But that doesn't really matter as long as they are quiet so you don't receive complaints long enough to sell them off and start breeding the next litter, right?

  • If you are getting sound complaints, you probably have too many dogs... also if you are worried about dogs dying in shelters why are you contributing by breeding? ...then justifying you mutilating these animals? Because chances are quite a few of the dogs you breed, and love so much, are going to die in a shelter anyways, debarked or not. Animals were not put on this earth to help provide us with financial security.

  • hunney01 ... you should get the same procedure to your self and shut the fuck up.. hope you never need the warning of a dogs bark... stop fucking with nature get a fucking Tuttle if the bark bothers you so much you inhumane asshole

  • Hunney01 Thank you for the excellent and true reply. I just can't deal with wild accusations... I had to ignore jen0jen06. Life in the real world sometimes can't be conveyed to some young people getting their information from "some" sources.

I've been a rescuer for 25 years and we do what we have to do to save lives. They don't know they bark softly. They're just having a great time playing.

  • @fayrwynds and @Hunney Both of you are sick, twisted and pathetic for committing this kind of cruelty to animals. You clearly have no skill with animals and no dignity. "some" sources.... you are an idiot.

"some" sort of malign physical illness is what you deserve.

  • Oh get a life jenojen. Does it sound like these dogs cant bark!? Debarking dogs only means to lessen the shreek of their bark. Most breeders do this as I do, as we get complaints from neighbors and threats from animal control to take our dogs. So which is better? A dog debarked living happily in a home whith a quieter voice, or put to sleep at a pound? Hmm. Please don't assume cruelty when you have no knowledge on the subject. That is plain ignorance.

  • @hunney01 I'm hoping by this time you have gone out of "business". Is that the only choice you're offering? Being maimed, or being killed? There are millions of animals being killed in shelters, it's true. If people would adopt instead of shop, the numbers would go down. You are adding to the problem, not providing a solution. As far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as reputable breeders - just people who are interested in making a buck off of a species that is helpless.

  • This is disgusting. You should be extremely ashamed of yourself. Dogs bark. It's life. If you don't like it, don't get a dog. ESPECIALLY Shelties. They're herding dogs... of course they are going to bark.

    Barbaric.
