  • That whole Louis-Schmeling saga is really just about as inspirational as a boxing saga can get. Louis wins out for Black Americans, America, and democracy, facsist Gemany and Hitler are defeated in a cultural way, the Jews and Poles and others oppresed by the Nazis are given a glimmer of hope to hold onto, and even the fight's loser, Schmeling, ends up winning, shedding the Nazis and becoming friends with Louis, further healing the wounds of a horribly hurt and divided world.

    RIP to both. :)

  • did max and joe carry on any correspondence in latter years?

    great doc btw.

  • I have no idea, but it would be interesting to find out though.

  • yeh they did for sure. Everytime Max visited America in later years, him and Joe would always get together. Max even payed for Joe's funeral when he died.

There was also a show in the 50's which was about Joe Louis' career, Max came on that show and him and Joe both talked about the fights they had and the friendship they made after the 2 fights

  • Max ended up paying for Joe's funeral

  • Are you serious? That's so nice to know. Thanks!

  • Yeah Max and Sinatra actually helped out Joe a lot financially.
