The song proved to be a big pan European hit in 1974, peaking at Nr. 8 at the UK SIngles Chart with the English version "Go (Before You Break My Heart)" with "Si" on the flip side. Gigliola released an album in English with 10 songs in 1974, including "Go" and "This is My Prayer" (English version of "Non ho l'eta") and also recorded the song in French, German, Spanish...
Yes, this song is best than Abba's Waterloo. But Abba is a classic, and they did better songs after Waterloo. Apart from that, at first Abba chose "Hasta Mañana" (best song than "Si") to perform for Eurovision, but they did prefer "Waterloo" finally.
I am an Abba Fan and I'm Happy that Abba Won! If they had Not they would be nobodys...*:( I'm sure that Gigliola is Singing somewhere Even Today...*:) Ciao!
@unagondola I agree totally with your comments! I also loved Abba but this was a performance from a superstar who owned the stage as she sang this superbly atmospheric masterpiece. I also loved the English version 'Go', which surprisingly managed to sound brilliant in the translation. I think she also scored a top 10 UK hit with that version. Thanks for posting this : )
Italy and or Italian artists have produced so many (world) hits that it's mind boggling. Unfortunately, only for those who understand Italian, can appreciate those songs. Personally, I think the above is the reason Gigiola did not win the Eurovision that year. Bella canzone...
Had it been any other year Italy would have won. ABBA song was so catchy and commercial it was bound to win. Gigliola was up against a group who were to dominate the 1970's and early 80's. However,Si or Go had a beautiful melody and became an International hit for Gigliola. It's a pity she never focused her talents in the UK or USA.
Many Brits and Yanks are discovering the very talented Gigliola Cinquetti for the first time. Still we
have these fantastic performances captured on video.
I think there was a change of times in 1974, we wanted something different, we were bored of these "classic Eurovision power ballads" and ABBA was something of a change. I am glad they won. This song is great, Gigliola is great. So is Italian music. Waterloo was a watermark for Eurovision Song Contest in the same way as Lordi was to be later....haha.
Grazie
Does anyone have the original words of this magnificent song? My Italy is not enough to pick the words right from the lyrics. Anyway a wonderful song from Gigliola once again.
Esta canção é tão linda e tão bem cantada.Não consigo entender como pôde perder para os Abba que têm músicas boas mas Waterloo, sinceramente não me parece das mais conseguidas a nível melódico.
I so agree, as far as composition and arrangement are concerned this was the better song! Waterloo goes to your feet, but this one goes to the heart. Maybe the jury was just more in the mood for an up tempo number... at least it came in second, anything else would be nothing short of scandalous.
Few peple know (forgive my english) that "Sì" didn't have so much success in our country (Italy). This song infact was censored and it could not be plaied at the radio and on TV. In 1974 Italy voted to keep or take off divorce law (may the 12th)and governament say that affermative answer could be a problem for "Vote no" Party. But Gigliola remain a living legend in Italy and abroad (Tramvinicyus from Rome)
Beautiful Gigliola, with her beautiful voice, singing one of the most beautiful italian songs ever written. Italy has given us so many unforgettable songs throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Grazie! Unfortunately, this is a long time ago.
Questa si che è una bellissima canzone!

In my opinion this is the best song ever to come out of Eurovision. A truly beautiful ballad sung by the most beautiful singer of them all!

I heard the second song that came first in the competition that year it was called Waterloo- totally a CRAP ASS song compared to this one .

Gigliola! bellissima la tua "SI"
decisamente meglio di Waterloo
nel nostro cuore la vera vincitrice di allora sei tu e non gli ABBA!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Waterloo was stronger song, and Abbas Agnetha got them a lot of votes with her beauty and sexyness.

Thank you so much! This remains not only the greatest Eurovision song of all time but also one of the finest songs ever written.
The build up within the song,....the emotion within the delivery,.....just fantastic,...been waiting years to pin this down.

what a contest 1974 was.... Beautiful number and she sings it with passion in Brighton.
Were Italy robbed? Would ABBA have been so famous had they come 2nd?
What if indeed...

the most beautiful song of that year definitively....perhaps the charisma and very lively strong performance os ABBA is what did it

This is a good example to show that a jury can make mistakes. This song was far superior than the ABBA song that won in '74.
But in our hearts, this song was the winner.
