I can't imagine how unbareable coudl have been for Monsaingeon to film this guy who tries to act and play like his (of Monsaigeon) friend Glenn Gould... ridiculous.
People people, I need some assistance for the song name / artist who does this piano jazz song. "Family Guy like the phillies." @ 14 seconds.(thats the video that the song is in) I've been searching for like 2months. Thank you!!
People should learn to appreciate his creativeness and imaginative expressions here. So much negative comments! None of you here can perform like him!
beautiful music, but not be played as it should be a joke...i dont like his "doings" and joking - its a joking piece, and a happy piece, but bach should be taken serious - the bass-notes followes the musical phrase and line at the beginning.
I think people are mixing a bit the character and the playing. The end result is what matters, and I guess he is still not as good as Gould. I would love to hear him playing the Bach/Busoni Chaconne, that is my testbed for musicians wanting to play Bach :)
He's a good enough pianist, but it's his carisma that faschinated me when this was shown on Swedish television.
The son of a German Teacher and a Kant Scientist... God has been nice to him, he rather looks like the son of Brangelina (yes, I'm hetersosexual).
But the way he looks and treats the piano like some delicate part of a woman.... He's a brilliant pianist, but I would rather se a concert with him than buy one of his records.
Du talent, de l'analyse, du travail, du génie, de l'oreille, un formidable toucher, un sens musical incontestable, bref, un musicien accompli et innovant...il peut nous faire pleurer de joie de moins de 30 secondes d'écoute...
do not be fooled by physical motion or words! This pianist is too full of himself, obnoxiously full of himself. Listen to Perahia's recording of the same- the sound is all that matters.
Some of it is put on for the camera. Everybody gets a little different when theres a camera around. Also, a lot of famous musicians have an ego, they all just express that ego differently. And being egotistical about ones work doesnt make it any less masterful or ingenious. I for one couldn't give less of a damn about Perahia's Bach. It has some good points but in overall execution he falls short of Fray, and DEFINITELY falls short of Gould. Fray is a bit derivative of Gould but who cares.
I think to be good you have to play with a bit a ego. When you hear someone great play, it doesn't sound like they are 2nd guessing. I mean when you listen to the greats they all play with cocky attitude, and they sound like they think their way is the only way to play... however, you can usually find other recordings of them playing it very different. I would also say this particular player is very young and has quite a "stage face" which is another reason he is well known. Just my thought.
He achieves incredible musicality and articulation, not just by playing each note cleanly, but by groupings, crescendo and decresc, and a rock-steady tempo. Really really good! Thanks EMI for posting these!
David, through no loss of accuracy and definition, brings a playfull ,sensual spirit that casts feelings I've yet to have heard emerge from Bach. He also engages the orchestra in a manner that makes it an active contributor to this. Bach is transformed in his hands from the usual master mathematician to an inquisitive physicist, for whom pattern, distinction and accuracy are a means to the end of curious exploration and free emotional involvement. Fantastic.
Finally! Someone playing Bach with some life in it! These compositions are thoughts and feelings from a brain that turned to dust hundreds of years ago but Fray brings them new life and meaning with his youthful passion and intensity. Bravo!
WOW! Move over, Glenn Gould! What a highly charged muscian to take the place of my beloved and departed Glenn Gould, This youngster is nothing short of terrific. May he prosper. What fun this clip is!!

I think it's fascinating footage of a young concert pianist rehearsing. He does seem to be a bit brash, but I think he's also full of conviction.
