Adobe Illustrator: Path Finder Shape Modes

hey thanks man, as soon as you started you video I was able to remeber how to find the path finder tool panel. This helped me alot because I was able to finish my homework lol.

i need to create a cylinder using 2 elipse and one rectangle but when i add them all to shape it automatically expands them but i want the top elipse to keep its outline so it could look 3d-ish. plz help
