The reason why it broke is because it is one of those cheap knock-off katanas that usually sell for $20-$80. They break so easily and are at low prices because they are machine made and are forged from weak metals, unlike a true battle katana which are ALWAYS made by hand and crafted to pure perfection and forged from far stronger metals! However the only thing about battle katanas are they sell usually for $200-$2000 and they are far heavier as well, but so much more balanced in my opinion.

The problem is that display manufacturers add it this cheep ass workaround called a rat-tail tang. You know what that means? that a welded on stick of metal the size of a pencil is holding that blade in place. even light contact snaps it.
Freeze it at 0:08, you can clearly see there is several inches of blade remaining above the haft. If you don't believe me, I can PM you screenshots of the broken sword highlighted to show where it broke.

The problem isn't that this sword is made in China. Hanwei, possibly the most respected sword manufacturing company in the world is based in Dalian, China. The problem is these swords are made of stainless steel. Real swords are made of carbon steel or tamahagane. Stainless is absolute trash for anything over a foot long and is good for nothing more than display. Actually, they don't even look good on display. Point is, the sword is made from inferior metal, it doesn't matter where it's from.
Indeed. Stainless steel holds a good edge- that's why they're good as cutlery- but that's it. You can't make a sword from it. It looks nice enough to mount somewhere, but stainless steel =/= sword steel.

The problem isn't that this sword is made in China. Hanwei, possibly the most respected sword manufacturing company in the world is based in Dalian, China. The problem is these swords are made of stainless steel. Real swords are made of carbon steel or tamahagane. Stainless is absolute trash for anything over a foot long and is good for nothing more than display. Actually, they don't even look good on display. Point is, the sword is made from inferior metal, it doesn't matter where it's from.

the problem isn't so much the steel, but the manufacturing process. Odds are these are cast in a mold. Whereas a true katana is folded.

Indeed. Stainless steel holds a good edge- that's why they're good as cutlery- but that's it. You can't make a sword from it. It looks nice enough to mount somewhere, but stainless steel =/= sword steel.

Well no, but this is a stainless steel decoration piece, so they are prone to breakage. And if you pay close attention to the hilt, you'll see that the cross robe pattern is very poorly executed.
This "sword" is a major offence to any sword that has been ever created.

NEVER swing a rat-tail tang sword. Unless you like sharp metal missiles hitting you. This guy is a moron and deserved what happened. I bought this sword off an Internet site for 10 f'in dollars, people. 10 dollars. And they're trying to sell it for 50. This sword is a wallhanger and not meant for ANYTHING else!

this is why you do not go hitting things with cheap imitation swords. nothing you can buy for less than a few hundred dollars should EVER be considered for cutting work of any sort, and that idiot was hammering a blade on a hard wood counter top. even a martial arts grade katana is likely to shatter (with more serious results) when abusing it in that fashion.

lol well you maye be right that a "Real" katana from like japan should be around 10-15,000 but they do sell good ones for around $250-300 but the swords that are like $50 are mainly for show....stuff if their sharp they WILL hurt and or kill somebody.... my father went to japan once he went to Okinawa japan and got a a set of 2 one regular one smaller for around $150 USD ....150 in converted to japanese money.... any way their good swords not to fancy and not to crappy. know what your buying..

A real genuine Katana will cost a lot more then a 1000 dollar, more like 15 or 25.000 to be exact. It takes a very long time to make one and the Smith is not gonna hand it over to you for just cash.. they have very strict moral codes and wont sell a sword to just anyone with a large wallet.

This is why fake FAKE samurai swords should be banned. I hate people with fake Japanese swords saying they have a katana.
REAL Japanese swords are folded steel by hands and cost thousands of dollars. Anything under a $1000 is CRAP, anyone who has one is CRAP.
