Back then, back when the country was just getting started, a two party system made sense. The country was not as complex. Economics was not as complex and dynamic. Immigration, social reform, taxation, defense, etc.
Now each of those things have become orders of magnitude more complex. So one would think that these issues have become multidimensional.
Yet why does the political establishment wish to retain a two-party system?
I really don't think that Obama is going to loose his reelection. I understand that his approval rating is low but that doesn't mean the people are going to elect another republican after the Bush administration.

We had a similar thing happen in Australia in our election. Labor moved right so everyone who used to vote Labor voted Green which resulted in a hung parliament. The upshot of which was that independents and to a lesser extent greens had a huge amount of bargaining power with regard to policy, as the two major parties need to win them to form a coalition government.

People like us need to start advocating for it NOW though. I suggest emailing some of the real progessive politicians like Alan Grayson or Russ Feingold or Bernie Sanders and asking them to challenge president worthless in the primary & general election. I have.

We had a similar thing happen in Australia in our election. Labor moved right so everyone who used to vote Labor voted Green which resulted in a hung parliament. The upshot of which was that independents and to a lesser extent greens had a huge amount of bargaining power with regard to policy, as the two major parties need to win them to form a coalition government.

That said, I'll vote for Bachmann if she can guarantee lobby reform and single terms for all offices. I hate Bachmann's.... everything. I'm so glad I am a republican. Do you guys know what Obama is going to do two before the elections? Release a movie about Osama Bin Laden's capture. He will give the filmmakers access to special military information. This will be done in order to stir the emotions of the people. To easily sway them.... Sigh...

Why not use Reason and Logic in the realm of politics - which effects the ENTIRE population.
Is it reasonable or logical to force a peaceful individual to act a certain way?...kidnap a peaceful person?...tell a peaceful person that they cannot be within a certain geographical region b/c where they were born?...steal from a person?...tell a business that the MUST NOT discriminate?
