It's all so lame when you look back, millions of Irish grovelling to Jack Charlton, it was like the Irish peasants grovelling to the English landlord in the programme The Irish R.M
That summer was mental. After the penalty shootout there was people signing and dancing on the streets in Dublin until well into the next day. It was something I have not seen since that day. Great memories. I just hope they have not become too posh to do it again in the future.
seeing all the crap thats going on in this country at the moment its watching this video that reminds me why im still proud to be irish, i think we have such a unity bigger than any other country during a world cup or european cup, roll on 2014 hopefully we'll be there so we can go through this all over again
I was born in 1992 so I wasn't around but I have heard so much about the celebrations. I don't know if any of you did this but my dad told me that he went to the point to watch the games and they had a pitch laid out in the center.
This video was great, brought a tear to my eye. It is what we are all about, unity
Great post - really brings back the memories. I was 18 during that World Cup and without doubt it was the best summer of my life and one that I don;t think will be bested.

Looking at the haircuts, the insecurity and the gratuitous hopping on the bandwagon by fuckwits who'd never seen a game of football in their lives - not to mention the shit football - its hard to get nostalgic about this. I find it a bit embarrassing. I'm glad this Ireland doesn't exist any more.
@ronan32 we are far more backward today, withg are SUV's and Lattes. Everyone looking dow their noses at each other. Today we are just a carbon copy of the UK.
what are you talking about?? did you watch the spain game from the 2002 world cup? on the balance of play, we were unlucky not to have beaten them. damien duff tormented them down the right. now, how exactly am i wrong to point this out? please explain this to me as i'm sure any long serving irish fan would like to hear your explaination on that one. i'd ask again... did you watch the ireland - spain game from 2002?
We comprehensively had the beating of Spain at most points in that match...I am actually quietly confident we can do the business against France in the play-offs...
every time we reached the world cup we got out of the group 1990 got to quaters before losing to italy 1 nil 1994 got to last 16 before losing to the dutch and 2002 got to last 16 and lost to spain on pens a game we really should have won hopefully next year we wil go all the way to the final
Dont think we will ever see the likes again to be honest. Even if we get to the world cup it still won't have the same impact as it did back then. Niall Quinn summed it up perfect last night on the late late show. He said back then there was a togetherness in the team and i think it was the same throughout the country. Money changed this country for the worse in my opinion. In saying all that it will still be the best feeling if we can get to the World Cup finals in 2010 but it'll never be WC90
2.5 million watched that match, unbelieveable!! there were only 3 million in the country back then, the other half million must of been in the boozer haha.
Go on John Healy at 9:34. Lovely. Roll on June 2012.
