Molting is when a creature sheds its shell or skin to regrow a new set that will better accommodate their change in size. When a crab molts, it discards its shell and regrows new one that can better accommodate it, since they get skinnier/fattier and their shells can get uncomfortable. Usually happens once every few months for crabs. Some shrimp do it weekly.
