@aztec714ok Shame on you for your racist attitude towards people of color! As an aztec, what could you possibly know about N.A. culture? Be sure that Immigration could be looking for you. Remember, there are 4 colors of man and it does not include monkeys!
@aztec714ok You exemplify the racist attitudes that permeate the Native American community in regards to the history of the Five Slave Holding Tribes. The Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole tribes have a documented history that they have in my opinion deliberately avoided.
You have no credible response to the documented history so you resort to racial epithets in a childish and racist reaction to the truth.
@aztec714ok Let's try an experiment, you name one African that owned slaves and I'll name one "Indian" from the Five Slave Holding Tribes who held African and African Native people as slaves? That's 5 to 1!
No one is trying to be more righteous than Native Americans but I am setting the record straight and shedding light on the American Indian hypocrisy's on their righteous indignation.
Them federal tribes in Oklahoma is attacking all people they don't like.... right now the cherokee in oklahoma is trying to make it so NO indigenious people of kentucky can be recognized!!! These people have tried to get support to make it so no freedman can get whats rightfully theirs...they are trying to get support to keep the lumbee tribe from getting whats theirs either....it's a shame what these oklahoma tribes are doing.
No he wasnt. But theres a lot that I have yet to discover. Its so interesting what u wrote in the description. Native Americans absolutely did own African slaves. Its crazy how we dont learn this in grade school... Again I have yet to learn a great deal about my history but im really excited to learn more.
Interesting. Im doing my family tree. Im a McIntosh. My McIntosh family in Muskogee and other parts of Oklahoma are very abundant. Unfortunately my dad has not told me about his side. So im going in with no info. My family is intertwined with creek and cherokee. Ultimately i've traced us back to chief William McIntosh. Part scottish and part cherokee. This is a very interesting journey im on. I would love to talk to u on how to further my search on my family history!
@74karonligon Tell me more about your Ligon family; where did they originate? Do they have a connection to Indian Territory or Oklahoma? Do you have names of your ancestors; grandmother, grandfather, great grandfather?
Without knowing more about your Ligon's I can't answer your question. in other words, who are you?
@VideoGriot I dont know to much about my Ligon fam....but i do know we came from okolona mississippi, my grandfathers name was Wardell Ligon, i was told that his father was indian. My fathers name is Major Ligon. We are scattered all over the place...Texas, Oklahoma, California, New York, Michigan...etc. I believe all Ligons are related in some way. There are some that spell the name different. Liggins, Liggon, Logan. My auntie is doing some research on our family she has more info than i.
@74karonligon Greetings Karon, I wouldn't go so far to say we are all related but the misspelling issue is one I can attest to.
Karon, I'm sure your auntie has more answers for you than I could ever provide since she is the one performing the research on your family.
One thing to check out if she hasn't done so already is the Mississippi Choctaw records. Since you mention NDN ancestry, it's one place to look. If they were in OK @ 1830-1907 try the Dawes Commission records Choctaw/Chickasaw
@74karonligon You can subscribe to my blog if you would like to know more about Indian Territory/Oklahoma and the history of blacks who lived among the Five Slave Holding Tribes; Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek (Muskogee) and Seminole.
*grew up on, not "group" in my previous comment. it's nice to see other positive comments here. I was recently invited to get my tribal card by an indigenous Ottawa from Michigan. The Indian Affairs office is on Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles, a major street. I didn't know the office had been there all this time. She goes there to get financial assistance whenever she needs it, but I had wanted my card mostly for the relationships & community-building. I don't have hard proof my ancestry though.
My family is part black Creek Indian from Oklahoma. My great-grandmother looked like a mix between Halle Berry and Jada Pinkett with long straight black hair. Her brother worked as a tradesman and translator between the black and Native American groups and he group up on or near the reservation. Thank you for posting this video
@chart3 The Creeks are surprising in their silence about this issue. Along with the Seminole Nation that was part of the Creek Nation at one time have a history of "blacks" being heavily involved in their life, culture and politics. Many interpreters in the Creek and Seminole Nations were blacks. That is another story that must be told!
I just wrote a paper for this, and I'm glad you made a video.
It's sad how are people are excluded in Oklahoma history. being of both those, I am slightly appalled at some Oklahoman behavior. They burnt any evidence to the Greenwood race riot. Oklahomans are good at keeping things quiet.
I'm glad to hear you took the time to write about this history. Despite the attempts at ignoring this history we have an obligation and responsibility to tell our story! Today's technology can level the playing field for creating videos, writing and what ever you imagination leads you to use in an effort to bring this unique history to the public's attention. I welcome the opportunity to view your work!!!
