Anybody wanting the real lyrics need only search "Green grow the rushes O" here on youtube for several nice choices. The poem "Green grow the rashes, o" note the spelling difference is also featured and will come up at the same time. These are two different songs with very different melodies and words. Only the titles are similar.
@musicbox193 That is the solitary line from the original folk song that remains intact, actually. Just google "Green Grow the Rushes, O" for the real lyrics. They're vague, but have religious overtones, and also go on for a dozen verses, so I guess the Sesame Street writers decided to re-write a shorter, more secular, less confusing version.
4 little brown ducklings...3..3.. the dragonflies... 2 2 little green frogs jumping on the lilly pads... 1 is 1 all alone and ever more shall be so... 1 is 1 all alone and ever more shall be so...
4 little brown ducklings...3..3.. the dragonflies... 2 2 little green frogs jumping on the lilly pads... 1 is 1 all alone and ever more shall be so...

I remember this vividly from when I was little! It's an old, old Scottish folk song that Robert Burns wrote the original lyrics for.

This song can be heard in "Sesame Street Numbers" for the PC.

I've always wondered why they don't actually have anything for 1 in this song, they just say "1 is 1 and all alone and evermore shall be so"
I like how the turtle sticks his head out of the grass, is he asking whoever's out there what the number is about?

It's based on Come and I Will Sing You (The Twelve Apostles) song. Great Big Sea covers this on The Hard and The Easy.

I always loved this song. I loved Aldabran and Galapagos tortoises as a kid and still do, so I was always rapt by this.

I think the turtle was the main memory jogger. I vaguely somewhere in my mind remembered it. Classic Sesame Street-got to love it!
