The reason atheists point out that the christian god is harsh and evil is because this contradicts the view christians has of it. If succesful, the christians will realize they pray to something that contradicts itself and abandon their faith.
This has to be a joke. Atheism is not a claim, nor is it necessarily a 'position'. No evidence is required, nor CAN be required. The only claim an atheist *could* make that might need to be backed up with evidence is the statement: "There is no god," which most atheists are too smart to claim.

There are certain things that occur within people's lives that can't be explained. It's also within one's nature to believe in "something", if that "something" for people is God - so be it.

But if you wish to insist on the idea that people have enough evidence to come to a conclusion, then that forces the conclusion from me that there is no god. So what can you infer from that, besides the fact that I don't believe you?

You ask about dark matter and energy and the nature of gravity... how does postulating a god help us deal with any of this? Simple answer: it doesn't. So god is not necessary to explain the universe, and instead halts all further investigation. You can't expect to propose unevidenced mechanisms and have people immediately accept them.

There may be something out there which can only be satisfactorily explained by invoking a deity, but so far the claims that X can only be explained by invoking a deity are unsatisfactory and based on equivocal evidence, and thus rejected.

What about the 99% of biologist (you know, the guys actually doing the research) know evolution is reality. The problem is that most creationists don't understand how evolution works. I believe there is information regarding our very existence that we have not acquired or attained yet, there's also certain information that is "unattainable" that can't be explained or analyzed; part of the nature that one would perceive to be "supernatural" or "unknown". There are certain things that occur within people's lives that can't be explained. It's also within one's nature to believe in "something", if that "something" for people is God - so be it.
