How does double heading actually work? Is there some link between the locomotives to make sure the leading engine isn't slacking and therfore rendering itself more of a hinderance than help.
Id imagine on ocassions the trailing engine would be pulling the load and pushing the leading engine too.
All in the communication between the crews. Over here in the states, steam locos communicate to each other via whistle signals. I'm sure the practice is the same in the UK. Other than that, they just hook 'em together like any other train. And, yes, there are times where one engine will be doing more work than the other. ;)
@justandy333 i presume the driver's adhere to the route signs such as speed, whistle, brake, etc. Even without a communication link i assume both engines know what they're doing.
I'm happy to say that I have one recollection of seeing a Brit: Southbound at Shrewsbury heading the Pines Express (after it had been diverted off the S&D route). There was a terrific crowd waiting to get on, and as a kid it was hard to see over them, but in my minds eye I can see the head-on shot as it drew into the station's easternmost platform (Platform 7?). I have no idea which one. About 1964.
wow how brilliant to see the pair together especially double headed.
I saw Britannia at Elsenham in 1993 there was a small steam rally on at the same time and they all blew their whistles as Britannia blew hers as she was coming up to the station wow what an atmosphere coz then they all went whistle mad including Britannia!
I will never forget that day especially as I was very pregnant and the baby kept jumping at Britannia's whistle
Great Video, Liked! :)

Sorry it is pre digital so there is no date stamp on the film. Try asking Didcot, someone there might remember.
