My guess is he bows that way because he's not after getting the best of a violin's sound and emotional power- like Mutter does, for instance- but after the music.
Just like Gould tempered with the mechanism of his piano.
That's a quest for the essence of the music, not just a performance.

I love Vengerov's playing but I hate all this dancing about the place and making freaky facial expressions.........one day he'll become the world's most renowned facial contortionist
basically, we don't need to care what and how the bowing is only if he could make beautiful music, like who care Heifetz;s bow is sometimes not straight ? i love Vengerov!
Agreed he is a high quality musician, this is why I am interested in the bowing of this piece! Is it just how you play Brahms? Is it because this is his own technique?
yes and absolutely, the bowing would be related to his music as the fingering does.
Vengerov is a very sensitive musician and violinist, he tried all he can to express the thought in music. you might watch and listen to his Tzigane video, my opinion is: it's the best version i 've ever heard.
Ahh, but the bowing is much more important than the fingering, because it is the Bow that determines the sound the instrument makes, ShirlyGirly had an excellent question, I being a string player myself, think about my bowing all the time to see what colors i want to create, the distance from the bridge i want, the bow weight, its all in the bow.
@ShirlyGirly44 His bowing away from the bridge affects how loud or soft the music is. On crescendo we play closer to the bridge. On decresendo, we play further away. It is a bowing technique taught when you first learn.
take a look at his arm and see how his bowing is a combination of wrist and arm movement. If he was using just wrist motion , you'd end up with a straighter bowing pattern. He probably learned playing like that, it's how I play.

Oh no! what are you talking about? I completely agree with you that Sarah Chang played this Hungarian dance No.7 the best, but I can't find it anywhere. I only heard once on the radio, and I've lost my recording of it.
Anyone have a link? Or even information where I can buy it?

The bowing in this is interesting. Why does he bow so far away from the bridge? Is it for the effect of the sound there is it his own style? I wonder

Vengerov is actually quite old now. he's in his early 30's. but his music is still astounding.
