This was a great fight. Vargas was very strong in this fight, physically stronger than ever, but too relentless and did not fight well. Where was his beautiful boxing from to Trinidad/Campas/Quartey fights? That is what would cause problems for Oscar, using the jab and strategical agressiong. Bling pressure and brainless aggression will only get you mercilessly beat down and KO'd by Oscar.
larry merchant comes out with some of the stupidest comments. 'six pack on his stomach but not on his chin' wtf? de la hoya was notorius for his left hook, put loads down with it. if anyone gets KO'd they immediately have no chin according to merchant. stupid old fart.
This fight just goes to show how great of a boxer Oscar really is.
Vargas had won 22 times with 20 victories by way of knock out. The guy was on fucking steroids in this fight.
Even with all of that, Oscar managed to show that even in the face of a strong ass puncher that's going to keep putting pressure, he could still out box and out class this guy in the later rounds.
Although, vargas' main down fall was his glass jaw.
Some fighters lose their prime in one fight like Meldrick Taylor after Chavez. The Trinidad beating, and this one from Oscar really eroded Vargas' skills. He was never the same. But give Vargas credit; he had balls! Oscar was quick, had a great left hook and ducked no one, but I pose this question: "Should De la Hoya be put in the same category as other great Mexican fighters of the past like Olivares, Zarate, Zamora, Palomino, Muniz, Chacon, Cuevas and Chavez?" I can't decide. Help me folks!
@hmsheppard Answer is NO. Not a matter of accomplishments, I mean he won 10 titles in 6 weight classes. But he is not Mexican. He is an American of Mexican descent. I have nothing against that, he defended the US in the Olympics, he had a great career and faced the best of his era. But Mexican boxing is about guys born, raised and most importantly, TRAINED AND FORMED as fighters here in our beautiful land. Olivares, Sanchez, Zarate, Cuevas, Chavez, Lopez, Barrera, Marquez. OUR BOXING HISTORY.
@hmsheppard Let's not leave Morales out of it, he is the only one to have officially beaten one Manny Pacquiao.
To be fair, let's give Oscar his place in the history of Boxing as one of the all time greats; but he's not one of our own. I, as a boxing fan, don't need to think about Oscar's glories to feel proud of being a Mexican boxing fan; we have had and will continue to have, our own Greats.
@hmsheppard Helluva answer my friend! I kind of feel the same way. De la Hoya certainly has his place in boxing history but I never really considered him O.G., you know? Over the years a lot of my Latino brothers out there have expressed the same sentiment as you. Original cats like Armando Muniz, Guty Espadas, Jesus Pimental, and Chucho Castillo were exciting to watch as a kid. One of my favorites was Jose Napoles, a Cuban who defected to Mexico City and became an adopted Mexican hero.

Oscar de la hoya is one of the greatest fighters of all time, he fought every elite fighter, he clearly beat Trinidad, Mosley II, mayweather, but the only fighter that really beat him was Hopkins, and manny pacquiao! If I was to make a petition to the courts on the score cards, I know they would change the robberies!
I think it's awesome how Chavez came out with Vargas, as if Vargas was going to give him retribution for Oscar beating his ass twice haha...Oscar was older when they fought, but prime Chavez vs Prime De la Hoya, De la Hoya wins eveytime. Chavez couldn't even take on Meldrick Taylor (robbed) and a No power Pernell Whitaker(pernell clearly won). Oscar had the best Jab and Left Hook Chavez ever faced.
I was really sad when Vargas lost this fight.. One day wile I was living in Oxnard and homless, I saw Fernando Vargas at a car wash, I'll never forget, he gave me $200 and gave me a hug. I was dirty, and hadn't takin a shower in weeks, but he didn't care, he told me to keep my head up, and stay strong...God bless you Fernando...
this was a great fight. but some ppl post as if it was a one sided beating. Vargas gave oscar all he could handle and dished out just as good a beating as he recieved. it was anyone's fight at the time of stopage but oscar poured it on and gave him the biz in round 11. a great fight and close fight but oscar in his prime was simply a problem, as was el feroz- but he did get caught juicin lol
that was a great fight. never a huge dlh fan but not a hater either. that was about as fired up i've been during a boxing match when he stopped that punk fernando vargas.
Chavez Jr. y Canelo Alvarez. Saludos desde Monterrey N.L.
I see vargas has logged in as richtreto.. haha this fagget said oscar was running, yea judging by vargas beat up face he was running alot. and lmao at mentioning that bum chavez JR he still in the under levels fighting bums? De La Hoya has defeated 17 world champions and has won 10 world titles in six different weight classes. call me when chavez jr does that.
I was Very Angry with Oscar DeLa Hoya for a very long time (bcuz of all the rematch refusals& also bcuz he LIED! "I think that i did enough to win" vs. Pernell Whitaker) But ive got a new-found respect for Oscar bcuz he: 1.)whipped Trinidad who was using illegal handwraps
2.)Vargas took steroids&Oscar STILL Bashed him! 3.)Mosley took EPO(Mostly)& the "victory" over Oscar was...Very Questionable!
@dcorelone I agree with everything except for that DLH got robbed the 2nd fight against Mosley and that was the only fight Mosley used the PEDs in and against Hopkins, DLH was looking great. He was winning on one scorecard.
@dcorelone man shut the fuck up. what illegal hand wraps? thats just a fucking moron that had nothing to do and made a video, the fucked with tito saying was the wrong wrapping. but it wasnt just bitch ass bhops trainer bitching
Oscar is the biggest idiot. He showed no respect to chaves when he fought him. He got chaves at an old age. I would love to see Chaves Jr beat the @$%! out of Oscar. I know he would lose.
@Shirashama is that why the copper boy refuses to fight Chaves Jr. Oscar is and has always been a chump. He gets beat like a rag doll. When was the last time that you saw him fight a good fighter and win? All I'm saying is that Jr has called him out already and Oscar hides like a the chump he is.
Oscar's retired and way past his prime, what do you expect? Even so, he would still own little boy Chavez Jr. The guy got outboxed by journeyman Troy Rowland in a pathetic matchup and also tested positive for some kind of banned substance. All he has is power.
Vargas taunted and bullied Oscar for years. Once in a cafe he went over to Oscars table and insulted him in front of his wife and friends. Oscar kept his cool and acted like a gentleman .Oscar got his chance to show him who was more of a man.
One of my favorite fights of all time and oscar is my IDOL without a doubt. I don't know why some people hate on him, hes a great human being and he was a great fighter. I will miss his bouts for a long time coming...
Did you even read my comment? Yes, Idol. An Idol doesn't mean he has to be the best fighter even though he was one of the best in his prime. No disrespect...
Nah, I see the point being made quite clearly. My point was to bring his idol selection criteria into question. And him (De La Hoya) being your idol dos not make him (NyyGyro) correct.
Offending you is not my intent. Nah, I completely agree with you and I see your point being made quite clearly. However...My point is and was to bring your Idol selection criteria into question. Is all.
I don't like Vargas because he exploited to much the Mexican fighter image in a wrong way, because that's not the image Mexican fighters have, but would Oscar de la hoya have fought Fernando Vargas before he fought Trinidad?
You know Antonio Margarito probably would not be the same fighter he was after the KO Mosley put on him.
I remember how Vargas would talk so much shit and act like an asshole. And Oscar was right. His fists did the talking. I still think it's whack how some people don't like Oscar De La Hoya. Seem's like a nice guy then.
WHo ever sees my COMMent Pause the Video at 0:15 you can see oscar doing the Sugar ray Shuffle hahah WTF ive never notice that LMAO anyone else see it the Dance
I remember seeing it live lol. I didn't pay a lot of attention to it cause I was more focused on the knock down. But I do remember. (ps: It's the Ali Shuffle)
Man u should have recorded it I wanna see it since they never showed another angle of it hahah it was so out of the ordinary who would think oscar would do that
That left hook has to be one of my favorite punches in the last 20 years. "Down goes Vargas on another rocket left-hook. A sensational left-hook by De La Hoya...". That's classic.
Vargas did not know how to speak spanish when he was training in Colonia. He actually lived in College Park, an area of Oxnard/Channel Islands that is actually middle class. He is NOT hard and NOT from Colonia or any other "hood".
lol vergas what a motherfucker had to use steroids got tested after this fight and tested positive wtf? lol come on u need steroids to beat oscar embressing bro and he said i quote * i didnt know that they were being put in my drinks* omg wtf go oscar OSCAR FOR LIFE SON my idol oscar
Does anyone else agree that de la Hoya's abilities flourished when he was with his original trainer Alcazar? i.e. combinations, angles, good foot work. Although de la Hoya was a good boxer, he still had a killer instinct, finishing many tough fights with by way of knockout. Too bad these abilites weren't coaxed by his other trainers the way they were with Alcazar.
Alcazar gave Oscar the RIGHT advice, but, Oscar just executed it wrong! He was told to stick and move, use his jab and stay away from Tito's left hook power. But, he was not told to run without throwing just back pedaling the last three rounds. If he had actually done what Alcazar told him to do properly he would have won it. Stick the jab, move, jab, jab move, counter punch with a combo, then jab and move always moving to Tito's right to stay away from his left. That's good advice.
No he wouldn't. That fight was fixed from the beginning. I agree with you that De L Hoya fought those last few rounds wrong but nothing short of a ko would have one de la hoya that fight. He was already behind so bad on the cheating judges cards that they had to give him the last few rounds (the ones he did nothing) so the fight didn't look so suspect.
Oscar never should've meddled in the middleweight division. Then he would avoid that painful defeat to scumbag BHop. But he beat Whitaker,Quartey,Carr, Chavez, Gatti, Vargas and Trinidad-yes, he did beat Trinidad! And thats enough to secure him a place in the hall of fame.
yes he did beat trinidad but he ran the whole time he should of lost to whitiker, chavez was past it gatti was a punch bag and vargas just got knocked out by everyone lol.
what did i say i had acheived i said he was lucky too beat whitaker chavez was past it vargas got knocked out by everyone ad gatti was a punch bag its common knowledge
Look with one phrase you disrespected tree champions who have accomplished a lot. Chavez was undefeated before the Oscar fight. And Vargas beat Quartey draw with Winkey and make a big match against Tito even tough he was K.O. Gaty won tree or four fight of the year awards.
i have followed DLH career since along time ago, and i can honestly say i was disgusted by the way he lost to pac, not because he got beat, but because he quit on the stool, i would rather see him get knocked out like he did with b-hop than just a simple surrender, i love DLH, he brought so much joy in seeing him fight, i hope that he can one day reflect on the pac fight and say that he never wanted to fight anymore because thats what it looked like to me
Someone probably already said this in the comment thread somewhere but George Foreman's color commentary in this fight was incredibly asinine. Does anybody know why he was so critical of Floyd Sr.'s abilities as a trainer? It almost sounds like Foreman has some kind of personal beef with him or something.
Hey, I don't disagree with you one bit. Plus, this was Oscar at 154, so he probably came in on fight night around 165. That's about 20 lbs bigger, plus with much better reflexes than he had in Dec. anyone who argues Pac would've beaten this Oscar is on drugs.
remember Vargas tested positive for some form of steriods for this fight...he still lost. As for Vargas being great...maybe but styles make the fight.
vargas never had a chance... it was too early in his career to put him up against trinidad and oscar. with the right promoter, he might of been great...
Vargas was already hurt, that hook at the end of round 10 got Vargas good but De La Hoya is a goood boxer THE BEST MEXICAN AMERICAN BOXER and varga i think is 3rd vargas is a good boxer to
I agree, there were things he did in this fight that leads me to believe that he could have won.Punchers need movement too, when Vargas moved his head, weaved and rolled, he was effective. His footwork was good in cutting off the angles. The only problem is that this type of fighting takes alot of energy, something Vargas ultimately did not have.
Carbajal was a beast. Had as many fights as Oscar, only lost twice to the same guy (Chiquita Gonazlez) though he knocked him out once...Was never stopped despite fighting top competition. Olympic pedigree. First million dollar flyweight. On paper, he's better than DLH, but most ppl will say DLH b/c he's better known, more popular and more mainstream. So DLH is greater in that context. In a pure boxing argument, based on talent and accomplishment alone, it's Carbajal hands down
Oba carr, camacho, campas, Vargas, and mayorga. All left overs from Trinidad that de la Hoya picked up

Did you even read my comment? Yes, Idol. An Idol doesn't mean he has to be the best fighter even though he was one of the best in his prime. No disrespect...
"LOL"
NyyGyro 2 years ago 2
You completly missed NyyGyro's point of oscar being his IDOL. I share the sentiment because hes my idol as well.
vladiator100 2 years ago
Nah, I see the point being made quite clearly. My point was to bring his idol selection criteria into question. And him (De La Hoya) being your idol dos not make him (NyyGyro) correct.
makerglass 2 years ago
No one can go wrong about naming someone their idol which means he is automatically right. I don't see any negatives about his "criteria".
vladiator100 2 years ago
Your still on this?....go away
makerglass 2 years ago
Offending you is not my intent. Nah, I completely agree with you and I see your point being made quite clearly. However...My point is and was to bring your Idol selection criteria into question. Is all.
makerglass 2 years ago
I don't like Vargas because he exploited to much the Mexican fighter image in a wrong way, because that's not the image Mexican fighters have, but would Oscar de la hoya have fought Fernando Vargas before he fought Trinidad?
You know Antonio Margarito probably would not be the same fighter he was after the KO Mosley put on him.
vergitacha 2 years ago
I remember how Vargas would talk so much shit and act like an asshole. And Oscar was right. His fists did the talking. I still think it's whack how some people don't like Oscar De La Hoya. Seem's like a nice guy then.

Oscar is the nicest guy you can meet. I got to meet him when I got an autograph from him 6 years ago.

That left hook has to be one of my favorite punches in the last 20 years. "Down goes Vargas on another rocket left-hook. A sensational left-hook by De La Hoya...". That's classic.

That left check hook from floyd mayweather on ricky hatton was one of my favorite in the last 20 years..

Vargas did not know how to speak spanish when he was training in Colonia. He actually lived in College Park, an area of Oxnard/Channel Islands that is actually middle class. He is NOT hard and NOT from Colonia or any other "hood".
Total poser and a total faggot.
doncorleon818 2 years ago 8

Does anyone else agree that de la Hoya's abilities flourished when he was with his original trainer Alcazar? i.e. combinations, angles, good foot work. Although de la Hoya was a good boxer, he still had a killer instinct, finishing many tough fights with by way of knockout. Too bad these abilites weren't coaxed by his other trainers the way they were with Alcazar.
fromeveningland 2 years ago 3
agreed
fablake1 2 years ago
alcazar was good but i always go back to the tito fight wrong advice cost him the fight
99carr99 2 years ago
Alcazar gave Oscar the RIGHT advice, but, Oscar just executed it wrong! He was told to stick and move, use his jab and stay away from Tito's left hook power. But, he was not told to run without throwing just back pedaling the last three rounds. If he had actually done what Alcazar told him to do properly he would have won it. Stick the jab, move, jab, jab move, counter punch with a combo, then jab and move always moving to Tito's right to stay away from his left. That's good advice.
bteniswood 2 years ago
No he wouldn't. That fight was fixed from the beginning. I agree with you that De L Hoya fought those last few rounds wrong but nothing short of a ko would have one de la hoya that fight. He was already behind so bad on the cheating judges cards that they had to give him the last few rounds (the ones he did nothing) so the fight didn't look so suspect.
bigsexy1234567 2 years ago
Let's not kid ourselves DLH lost his prime many years ago. The Pacman, while great, fought a diminished, emaciated, and dehydrated golden boy.

People still argue about this FACT, huh?

Greg879 2 years ago 2
Oscar never should've meddled in the middleweight division. Then he would avoid that painful defeat to scumbag BHop. But he beat Whitaker,Quartey,Carr, Chavez, Gatti, Vargas and Trinidad-yes, he did beat Trinidad! And thats enough to secure him a place in the hall of fame.
Jorsalfar 2 years ago 3
yes he did beat trinidad but he ran the whole time he should of lost to whitiker, chavez was past it gatti was a punch bag and vargas just got knocked out by everyone lol.
123jokaa 2 years ago
And what have you done in your life mister armchair critic :). You are not worthy to a water boy to any of the guys you've mentioned.
Lubetza 2 years ago
what did i say i had acheived i said he was lucky too beat whitaker chavez was past it vargas got knocked out by everyone ad gatti was a punch bag its common knowledge
123jokaa 2 years ago
Look with one phrase you disrespected tree champions who have accomplished a lot. Chavez was undefeated before the Oscar fight. And Vargas beat Quartey draw with Winkey and make a big match against Tito even tough he was K.O. Gaty won tree or four fight of the year awards.
Lubetza 2 years ago
Chavez was not undefeated before Oscar!
Vargas beating Quartey? And? He sucks.
Wright? SPLIT decision, a bullshit decision. Wright is entirely too defensive and has no offense. Boring fight.
Tito KILLED Vargas. Vargas is a puta.
doncorleon818 2 years ago
You could see Vargas juice confidence up the very end. He believed the juice would make him win, he was wrong.
baronluther 2 years ago
Almost seven years later and still as sweet watching low-life US hater Vargas getting his lights turned out by Oscar.
Wanna-be tough guy completely beaten by a man whose manhood he questioned - PWNED.

i think titos trinidads left hook is better just look at sum vids, im mex ame so dont start, my fav mex boxer is jcc, he is a true mex legend
1CrimeLab3 2 years ago
i have followed DLH career since along time ago, and i can honestly say i was disgusted by the way he lost to pac, not because he got beat, but because he quit on the stool, i would rather see him get knocked out like he did with b-hop than just a simple surrender, i love DLH, he brought so much joy in seeing him fight, i hope that he can one day reflect on the pac fight and say that he never wanted to fight anymore because thats what it looked like to me
drod82 2 years ago
De La Hoya was really one of the greats. He was always ready for a big fight. It's a shame he's retiring but it's probably a god idea.
Whyavier 2 years ago
Vargas was on roids too in this fight.

NEVER forget what De La Hoya has done for boxing, you guys are messed up and caught up cause he lost to Pacquiao.
He still has my respect. Just look back and you'll realize. Seriously.

Someone probably already said this in the comment thread somewhere but George Foreman's color commentary in this fight was incredibly asinine. Does anybody know why he was so critical of Floyd Sr.'s abilities as a trainer? It almost sounds like Foreman has some kind of personal beef with him or something.

LiLSiCk916 2 years ago
Hey, I don't disagree with you one bit. Plus, this was Oscar at 154, so he probably came in on fight night around 165. That's about 20 lbs bigger, plus with much better reflexes than he had in Dec. anyone who argues Pac would've beaten this Oscar is on drugs.

Vargas was already hurt, that hook at the end of round 10 got Vargas good but De La Hoya is a goood boxer THE BEST MEXICAN AMERICAN BOXER and varga i think is 3rd vargas is a good boxer to
GuiltyGamer 3 years ago
vargas #3!?!?!?!?!? Vargas isn't even the top 30 of Mexican boxers, or Mexican American.
muppet151 3 years ago
geah my bad i but hem to high he was a good boxer he is on my top 10 mex american
GuiltyGamer 3 years ago
Fair enough. Vargas didn't have the work ethic to be great. Which is sad, he certainly had natural ability.
muppet151 3 years ago
I agree, there were things he did in this fight that leads me to believe that he could have won.Punchers need movement too, when Vargas moved his head, weaved and rolled, he was effective. His footwork was good in cutting off the angles. The only problem is that this type of fighting takes alot of energy, something Vargas ultimately did not have.
lemonite1 3 years ago 2
DLH best Mex-Am boxer ever? Are you kidding. He stands third behind Bobby Chacon and Michael Carbajal.
SamboWarrior33 2 years ago
Carbajal was a beast. Had as many fights as Oscar, only lost twice to the same guy (Chiquita Gonazlez) though he knocked him out once...Was never stopped despite fighting top competition. Olympic pedigree. First million dollar flyweight. On paper, he's better than DLH, but most ppl will say DLH b/c he's better known, more popular and more mainstream. So DLH is greater in that context. In a pure boxing argument, based on talent and accomplishment alone, it's Carbajal hands down
Vergadoce 2 years ago
the # 1 reason oscar was a great fighter
his left hook
after all these years from 2002 to 2009
his speed slow down
that means his left hand its not
his letal weapon
