Excellent review of a great toy. I have the original 1981 version which I would never sell in mint condition and of course the newer larger and more impressive AT-AT. I wish the new AT-AT had that sound when one of it's feet is about to crush Luke's Snowspeeder. I don't know why they left out that sound.

guys, you excited for the new AT-AT to come out later in the year? It's supposed to cost $100, and is huge. Looking at action pictures, it has figures hanging around, like Luke on a grapple, and it looks like a figure is about the size of the AT-AT's foot. Looks like four figures can be in the head, with a couple of them standing in it! The thing is 24 inches tall, 28 inches long, and 12 inches wide and is able to hold twenty figures. Hotdog!

I used to own the original '70s version of the AT-AT. I didn't watch the whole vid so I might have missed some differences, but basically it was nowhere near as well made as this. My model unfortunately didn't survive moving house, all 4 legs came off at the hips and also the panel on the back came apart. I don't think the older model had the opening cockpit head, the grapple attachment or as much detail overall. The handle inside for moving the head had a button on it to light up the chin guns.

Good review. Have to point out though that it was a favorite toy way back in the 80s. ;) In regards to size the vintage version of the Imperial Lambda shuttle was quite a bit more expensive and the cubic size of the box was larger then the AT-AT. Think though that the rare vintage Crawler was pegged as both the dearest and largest of the vintage lot. Ahhh, memory lane. One dreams of an AT-AT robotic toy version, maybe the Japanese will indulge. ;þ

Statement: I have one of these , but mine was unfortunately an "as is", so it didn't come with the figures and stickers. I later lost the cockpit cover, and later after that those pieces that hold the cheek guns broke and the guns quit firing the missiles, then the chin guns stopped making noise (managed to fix that A.M.A.P.) fortunately, then one of the chin gun lights broke and I replaced it with a red decoration light. Even after all that it is still so sweet ( with the exception of cover).

I don't like the dark grey speckle plastic either. My original one doesn't have that and it looks a lot better....and the head handle in the original looks like it's built better....although on the original one you can only more the head side to side from the inside, I'm not sure but I don't think it moves up and down.

Heh--I had the original AT-AT back in the day, and fondly remember those noisy-a** leg joints. :-) The electronics have definitely been reworked--on the original, there was a button on the t-handle that activated a motor to make the chin-guns reciprocate (which seems to be manual now), and those guns were made of clear-plastic with a light-piping gimmick. Also, though it may just be a matter of growing up, but I seem to remember the old version being bigger overall than this one seems to be.
