ah the pure joy of pre grease Livvy I remember very clearly seeing Livvy for the first time on the uk tv show it's Cliff and have been a huge fan since Livvy has provided a soundtrack to my life.
Takes me back into my 19th year.......All i can say is she was very popular back then...Very beautiful......Her songs got lots of airplay here in Akron, Ohio.....Miss those old days :)
@moff0507 ....... I hear you, been there, that summers still with me and this song still gives me a nice warm fuzzy feeling inside, privilaged to have been there in time.
I first heard of ONJ when I was 12, that was 36 years ago. Been in love with her since. I remember when I was 16 a girl played the song Totally Hot on my 8-Track in my 1970 Camaro. She played the song to let me know how she felt about me. I have so many memories of ONJ. She will always be my number one. Absolutely love the song "SAM" and anyhing else she ever sang.
@moff0507 ....... I hear you, been there, that summers still with me and this song still gives me a nice warm fuzzy feeling inside, privilaged to have been there in time.
This song will forever remind of the lovely warm summer of '77. The only guy with the name Sam I could think of at the time was 'Sam McCloud' (played by Dennis Weaver) whom I had quite a crush on back then. Thanks for posting!
I first heard this when i was a little girl - and fell in love with it - I told everybody if I had a little boy I would name him "Sam" everybody laughed - but - guess what I did (yaey me) he's 18 now and still loves me singing this to him - love it and him soooo much
I dated a girl (funnily enough,Samantha!) in the mid 80's who looked like Olivia from the 70's and she was still asked all the time if she was Olivia Newton John! I said that just showed how slowly Olivia has aged, and here we are 20 years later and I can still say that!
And a very good choice it is, I might add. With me? "Sam" was tied with "Have You Never Been Mellow" as being her two greatest hits, but Lord knows, she sure had many other great songs also.
Throughout 1975, Olivia Newton John's number one hit, "Have You Never Been Mellow" was receiving substantial airplay throughout America. Very few believed Olivia could equal or top that success. But just two years later, Olivia released "Sam," a melancholy ballad that stood alone as one of the greatest, but most underrated songs of all time. Mysteriously, it only peaked at #20 in the Billboard Top 100. To this day, very few remember one of the world's greatest masterpiece gems ever, in "Sam."
Believe it or not I hated "Sam" when it was on the radio. I liked Olivia back in those pre-Grease days but didn't really flip for her until exactly a year ago. Now "Sam" is in my top 5 favorite Olivia songs and I think it may be her best vocal on record. This TOTP vocal is slightly different from that on the single and if it was recorded live (not recorded for this show then mimed) then it may be her best live vocal performance ever in my opinion..
I heard this song during my middle school days and I always thought she was singing to a woman, "Sam." Doesn't matter, still love the song; it's how she breathes and whispers the name...it's Olivia singing and her beautiful voice.
jazzlover1120, I have been searching this movie for so many years now, but without success. I was just wondering if you know how I could download the movie and if you know the website. I would really appreciate if you could direct me to where or how I may obtain a copy of this movie which has sentimental value for my wife and I. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Regards, Juan Dela Cruz
I had a black and white tv @ the time, out of work and saw her on Johny Carson or somebody late @ night and she was all dressed in white, totally beautiful woman (and she still is).
'Sam' was original a song from her 1976 album Don't stop believin'. I always thought it was about a fictitious person. Or maybe someone that she knew around 1976.
Good lord this song is...wow. I keep looking for the album of this but my cassette tape broke today and the store doesn't have it and it hasn't come in the mail on CD yet. :(
it's refreshing to see a song done in the traditional waltz tempo make it in the mainstream modern pop era. i feel like putting on a tux and doing the waltz with a partner in a ballroom gown when i hear this lovely ballad.
This reminds me of the sweatshop I worked in during summer hols of 77. My supervisors use to listen to the radio while they watched me work. This was played often, I loved it. music made the work less tedious. That was the same summer Elvis died if I'm not mistaken. My sister and I were on the top deck of a bus on our way to the same sweat shop. We were reading over the shoulder of someones newspaper, my sister screamed out 'Elvis is dead!' and the whole bus was in uproar.
Maybe is because lately I am more sensitive, but this song literally makes me cry...
