Hendrix used his thumb to fret the bass note on the 6th (low pitched E) string for a lot of chords. In this case the thumb frets the E at the 12th fret - the other notes are E at the 14th fret with the 3rd finger on the D string, G# at the 13th fret with the 2nd finger on the G string, and B at the 12th fret on the B string with the 1st finger. This leaves your pinky free to fret the high F# note on the last beat of the bar. You can mute the A string with the thumb/2nd finger.

Genius! i learn it in 30 min and i'm not soo good ;)
Sometimes the chords are not discribed so good (i mean when u only say E#maj or somethin^^) but for someone who don't hold the guitar first time its perfect!
its a way of playin barre chords so you have more freedom to add embelishments with ur fingers. imagine its the same as if ur index finger is straight against all 6 strings only instead hendrix played the low strings with his thumb and the highs with his index
great! good work!! i think we all have to agree that John Frusciante is a Guitar GOD!!!
