Astonishing artist! What a voice! Incredible soulfulness and depth. So glad he was able to be "rediscovered." What a tragedy that a treasure like Bey be hidden. Thanks for this great post!
doing a little research on male jazz singers. So many people out there trying to sound like jazz singers. This guy is telling a story with a rich voice in a jazz style. Amazingly touching. A storyteller! Enable the stars, I want to give it 5.
IMHO you have few artists of the caliber of Andy Bey with a tenor-baritone mix.Johnny Hartman,Leon Thomas, and younger generation Dwight Tribble are the inheritors of the Eckstine sound. But Bey is one of the best males singers ever.Pick up CD :'Ballads,Blues, and Bey".,it's androgyny, with a pathos maybe only songwriter Strayhorn is trancended into a universal definition of a love song LP.The fact that Bey has been out and honest with his H.I.V make all the more poignant.
I am an old fan whose favorite albumn as a teenager was "Andy & The Bey Sisters"....it had the most wonder rendition of "Bye-Bye Blackbird", "Sunny Side of the Street", many other favorites along with one of mine...."The Zombie Jamboree" I, sadly, lost that albumn back in the early 70's and would love so to find a copy.....can anyone help me??
I've been a Hartman/Prysock/Murphy fan for years, and Andy Bey is right up there!--a truly superb singer.
