for the last minute of the tape the defense on jordan was like wtf.....come on how could a team like celtics leave a guy like Jordan all open....and he practically never got a double team thrown at him! Sure he wasn't the legendary MJ yet, but still...
One of the best performances by Jordan, but ppl are quick to forget that Bird too had a superb game....statistically!!! God bless them both!
What's crazy about this game is, he had just come off missing most of the season with a broken foot and, and at the time boston was dominant as far as guarding wing players. ANd, his jump shot at the time was just ugly lol..
Yeah but the Celtics won this series, if Bird had not hurt his back paving his mothers driveway him self, I bet he would have won more than 3 championships, he was playing hurt after 87 I think, I dont think people ever put this into condsideration, if Bird stayed healthy he could have easily gotten as many championships as Magic.
Now here is where I dont understand where the Boston fans are thinking. Who is going to stop MJ, Pippen and Kuckoc. On top of that they have kerr (the best 3pt shooter % wise in the NBA) The bulls even at their old age was a way faster tempo than the Celtics. I think the Bulls D could hold out.
You right and here's another factor that's being overlooked. When the '86 Celtics went in their in their playoff run, they didn't face centers, who was anywhere near legendary the same way the Bulls faced during their playoff run!
For instance, in the 1st Round series against the Bulls, who was (32-50) they faced Dave Corzine, who was their starting Center and he proposed NO THREAT to their Frontcourt, specifically, Parish and McHale.
In the second Round, they faced the Atlanta Hawks...
...who went (50-32) and the center they faced was who?......Tree Rollins? LOL
And when they faced the (57-25) Milwaukee Bucks and their Centers were.......Randy Breuer..........& Earl Jones.
Although they Did faced one Dominant Center, who made it to the hall of fame, Hakeem Olajawon
Not to take anything away from those guys, but come on they don't compare to Alonzo Mourning (HOFer) who was a dominant Center who faced the '96 Bulls in the first round....or....Patrick Ewing (2008 HOF)
...who punished the Bulls frontcourt at times in the second round.
Then in the third round, they faced SHAQUILLE O'NEAL and the Orlando Magic and SWEPTED THEM IN THE PROCESS!! and Shaq's a future Hall of Famer and the Bulls defensively held them to only 84.7 Points PER GAME! That's better than The Celtics hold their last 4 opp. Bulls (113) Hawks (102.2) Bucks (103) and Rockets (102) which was probably good defense for such a high scoring era, which was impressive!
Not to mention they faced Shawn Kemp in the Finals who was another Dominant Center who also played forward. So Jordan faced 4 of many Dominant Centers of all time and specifically in that Era.
So these 1996 Bulls deserves more credit than they have been getting. The '72 Lakers with Wilt and West and the '85 and the '87 Lakers should be in that category also
Dont forget olajuwon was in his second year in the NBA and by that time hadnt developed his skills. He was repeatedly outplayed by Mchale because of his inexperience. The truth is the 96 Bulls D could hold down the 86 Celtics halfcourt offense.
Two of the greatest perimeter defenders ever: MJ & Pippen
Add in Ron harper who was a defensive threat
and Rodman who could hold down Shaq and Malone??
Who is going to stop MJ and Pippen on the fastbreak? Bird? lol isnt that the reason why
Your dum! The 86 Celtics beat houston in the finals with Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson and all through the 80`s and their playoff runs they faced centers like Moses Malone, Kareem, Hakeem, Ewing, etc, etc, and did just fine. Need I say more?
I will give you that Bird and MJ are equal on the offensive boards if you include passing and team play. Bird is fantastic and he made clutch shots as well as clutch steals but as a defender he was no where near MJ dont even go there man. You been smoking some bad pot
where do you get this bullshit. In what universe do you live in where Bird is better than MJ. I love Bird he is in my top 5 but better than MJ? So I like this argument where Jordan was a better scorer than Bird because he took more shots...ok do you honestly think Bird could have averaged 37 PPG with every team in the league zeroing in on him on defense? Do you know how hard it is to guard a SF that can shoot the ball when your team is worried about Mchale and Parish in the low post?
Who do you think would win between the '86 Celtics & tha '96 Bulls?
I don't think the 1986 Celtics can defeat the 1996 Bulls because, first of all, the '86 Celtics gave up over 100 points in each of the 3 games in the first round of the playoffs against Jordan's Bulls while Jordan was the only dominant scorer..... No Pippen, No Grant, No BJ, No Craig Hodges, no Cartwright, no Scott Williams and they Celtics Opponent point on AVERAGE WAS 113 POINTS!... That's not gonna cut it against....
these Chicago Bulls of 1996 in my opinion. With these 1996 Bulls, you're dealing with a team, whose players are very seasoned and preserves a greater intelligence on the court from both ends of the floor.....i'm gonna do a topic on my kobe is overrated free webs on why i don't think the celtics can beat the 96' Bulls even if the bulls were in the 1980s.
Everyone says that the Celtics frontcourt would destroy the Bulls but I been thinking the Bulls was probably the greatest defensive team of all time even better than the 87 Pistons who as we all know almost beat the Celtics. MJ would shut down Ainge easily, Pippen would hold Bird (wouldnt stop him altogether), Rodman could hold Mchale (wouldnt stop him either though) but at least he wold out rebound him. Parish is the deciding factor but all longely has to do is play D. Now lets reverse
History shows the Bulls only had a shot to beat the Celts when Jordan was the only one of his team scoring. Bull lose in OT by 4 that day MJ scores 63. Bulls only got to within 4 at the end of a playoff game against Boston one other time. Other 4 times they've played....not even close.
Bird played better all-around offense, Jordan played all-around better defense.
Bird had a better team than Jordan plain and simple. Bulls shouldn't have been in the playoffs with losing records.
No I'm not. Bird shot better from beyond the arc (37.3 to 32.7%) and from the line (88.6-83.5) and almost shot equally with Jordan from the field (49,7 to 49.6%) He also rebounded better (on both ends) and averaged 1 more APG (6.3 to 5.3) than Jordan. Therefore he's better at offense. Jordan just gets credit with being a better scorer because he took a lot more shots than Bird.
And as usual, Boston wins, MJ proves again he's the king of ballhogging and not a great team player like Bird. Check out my video on youtube that shows MJ getting punked by Bird: watch?v=a3lAuohZvnE
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What a ball hog. Why don't they show the next game in Chicago, game 3 where Jordan had a horrible 19 point performance and Boston crushed them and swept the series. Bird in his prime was a way better all around player than MJ.
@GPimp41 yes, sadly they were swept in this series 3-0. still it was a great effort by m. jordan. 63 points. a new & highest record set by a player. ****
Yeah, because the likes of Clyde Drexler, David Robinson, Charles Barkley, Dominique Wilkins, Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing, Mitch Richmond, Dikembe Mutombo, Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton, Shaquille O'Neal, Grant Hill, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Joe Dumars, and many MORE elite players I could mention, WEREN'T 'talented'?
Kobe is great for basketball in this era Jordan was great during the 80's and 90's, stop comparing and just enjoy them for their unique styles ..remember that MJ was also one of the great defensive players of all time as well as the many 40plus games he scored in the playoffs and 6 rings ..
Wow instead of just enjoying this incredible performance. Everyones busy comparing him to other players. Way to appericate one of the most amazing games in playoff history.
Career playoff matchup. Bird's Celtics vs. Jordan's Bulls. Larry's Celtics beat Jordan's Bulls 3 playoff series to 0 and Larry's Celtics beat Jordan's Bulls 9 playoff games to 0. That's right, Jordan NEVER beat Bird in a playoff game in 9 tries. But he did score 63 points once in an overtime playoff losing effort.
Why would you even mention the fakers Kolby cheese!! He does not have the honor to be placed among greatness!! Jordan was a competitor who sacrificed and gave nothin but his whole effort!! Kolby is too selfish to sacrifice that much!!! Kids stop making your little remarks, i doubt youd be on youtube if you were a recruter!
Jordan is the best one-on-one player ever, but not the greatest all-around player.
'86 is the year Bird won the NBA Championship, Playoff MVP, All-Star 3-point shootout (3rd straight), went 67-15 regular season (40 and 1 at home).... and his THIRD CONSECUTIVE NBA MVP.
No doubt Jordan is awesome, but If I had to select an All-Time Dream Team, Bird would definitely be the FIRST PICK.
Everything? Bird was a better passer, outside shooter with or without the 3-point line, and a better rebounder. Of course Jordan was a magnificent one-on-one defender, but Bird played better team defense than he ever got credit for (ask Isiah Thomas). Five Birds beat five Jordans.
Great Choice on your picks, this of course is when they are in the peak of their careers, A definite "DREAM TEAM", think of the possible subs too, kareem for russell, oh lord. But i Dont disagree, or agree with your claim of bird over jordan, Jordans Defense was far better than birds, It really depends on opinion, What is more important is changes as much as possesion
1986?!? What you children forget is that the Bulls were swept this series...yeah, ball-hog Jordan failed to realize "god disguised as Jordan" (as the ever gracious Larry Legend referred to him as after the contest) could not beat the BIG THREE! I remember their "bringing home the hardware" parade at city hall that year, I was 8 you don't forget that. Larry was better than MJ because he would get that triple double...while Mike was only looking out for his Nike contract first and foremost...
Did you see when Jordan was playing against the Bad Boy's or the Knicks in the playoffs there defense was punishing and plus the refs back then let them play instead of the refs today who call a foul on nothing so the defense back then was tougher than today's.
a lot of those scores came close to the basket......its impossible to get at least 60 scoring that close to the basket nowadays, you got to shoot more jumpers in todays game because todays defensive is better and more athletic.
The scores came from creating space and pulling up, not from complete drives. The celtics played great team defense; however it is one-on-one, which means one has to beat his man(create space) and then make the shot. This idea about the great difference in athleticism is a joke. Some of the most athletic players played during the jordan years: Nique, Magic, Clyde, Hakeem, Worthy, Robinson, Kemp, Glove, K. Malone, etc....

MJ won six over shit compeition when compared to Bird, Magic, or Dr. J's wins.
The NBA had an expansion that watered down the talent level of the league before Jordan's reign began.

You have to understand though, that MJs teams were pure shit compared to Larry's.
