She could do anything w/ her voice that she wanted. She left the world, but fortunately for the rest of us, she left her extraordinary musical gifts behind for us to appreciate.
I was casually listening to music videos and clicked on this one, not knowing who Eva Cassidy was. This is an excellent, beautiful version of that melancholy song. Wow, the phrasing and voice! Then I found out this wonderful singer is gone and passed at such an early age! very sad.
We are all born with gifts, some are born with superlative gifts, but few if ever are gifted to transcend all into the private space of iconic. She resides there.
not many artists today can produce such beautiful music with just their voice and barely any other accompaniment. That is because Eva had such a unique instrument in her voice, nothing else was necessary to make our emotions soar and our eyes tear up. That is true talent
@kspill172 It's unfortunate, but so many people - myself included- have only discovered Eva since her untimely passing. We're lucky she was able to record as much as she did in her short lifetime, and hopefully her music will be available to us forever. If you haven't, check out her recording of "Over the Rainbow." One of the best. Cheers.
Eva had an amazing talent, but this song I prefer to hear from Patti Page. I suppose after fifty-plus years of hearing one version, it is hard to change taste.
I still remember how I felt the first time I heard her sing "Over The Rainbow". What an incredible talent. Her technical skills were good but it was her ability to evoke an emotional response that put her over the top. Never heard anybody like her and I'm so grateful that we can still listen to that wonderful voice. Thank you, Eva.
you live on Eva !! (you just left this toxic planet ...you were to PURE too stay here too long) Thank goodness you left the rest of us your beautiful voice THANK YOU SO MUCH
This is the first time that I have heard this rendition, absolutely wonderful, so smooth, so hauntingly mild & beautifully lingering still, that the sage of the mind just keeps on strumming it through the memories of fancy & time. Thank you Eva, giovanni
She sang it with deep expression from the heart. It is beautiful listening to her voice although she is no longer with us. Long live her beautiful and shooting voice.
The first song I ever remember hearing on radio was "Tennessee Waltz", probably Patti Page's version. But it's Eva's rendition that brings me to tears.
I am new to her music but I have heard I love it. She had a beautiful heart which is expressed through her music. She shall live on in Heaven and her music shall continue to bless the earth.
Well beyonce & madonna plus the others are not being slammed. You do have to admit, or be deaf, that they will never reach this force of talent. They also could stopped showing as much of their bodies as they do their voice. pound for pound, there's no comparison, vocally or morally.
Heartbreaking, gutwrenching, and inspiring all at once. What makes it all the sadder is that this magnificent voice is no longer here on Earth. Rest assured she's a lead in God's choir.
Eva magnificently expresses various emotions in the song. She seems to easily go from the warm loving feelings she had for her darling to the anger she feels toward her friend who stole her sweetheart. This ability to express her emotions in her singing is her greatest talent. I can't get enough of Eva Cassidy.
Due credit to all versions and all singers of this song - but it's only EVA who can give me chills down my spine with her voice. The sheer beauty and purity and simplicity of her tone is unequalled. IMO She would have to have one of the most perfect voices I've ever heard. There is not even one flaw in her pitch, tone emotional interpretation and delivery. She nails it without any production gimmicks or electronic assistance
@dancgear She certainly had stellar phrasing that nobody else had, but you can't not mention people like Ella, Billie and Louis, the people who wrote the book on phrasing that Eva drew from. Then you have people like Aretha and Elvis. I would think they were all contemporary singers with at least equally magnificent phrasing.
This is a waltz, donc (no that's french, sorry), therefore we should dance. Dance because we had this wonderful voice, that we lost all too soon. Her voice touches me in places I didn't know exsisted. Her voice will always stay here.
@hndbrown Have you ears! This woman crucifies songs with ever so slightly off key moaning. At least when Shirley Bassey"sang" she totally murdered songs with truly flat notes. Cassidy's opening of 'Somewhere over the rainbow' with the first two notes inaccurately sung live forever with me. Just as Music from 'Kismet' forever ruin Borodin's string quartet.
@ronneesam The fact that Eva's music seems to provoke a catty, malevolent and girlish response from you makes me appreciate her music even more. But for what it's worth, I'll ask the same question of you I asked my daughter years ago: If you don't like her (you've made many comments on Eva's videos, all of 'em catty), why do you keep playing with her ? Consider playing with girls you *do* like....
@Edella. Catty, malevolent and girlish. Says more about you than me. Begging the question you are female why do you ascribe these words to someone who simply asks why a singer can't sing a song correctly? Please tell me why Eva Cassidy ignores the fact that 'Somewhere over the rainbow' starts with the first two notes an octave apart and simply repeats the first note? This is musically horrible and verges on wailing. If I provoke you into appreciating Cassidy's singing even more so be it.
@ronneesam it's called musical arrangement. if we all sang or played the same as the original it would be a boring world, but on the flipside, if we did, it might shut fannies like you up.
As much power as God has, why couldn't He allowed Eva to sing on earth instead of Heaven. We deserve(d) her just as much. I guess she was truly an angel sent down to make us all happy. I love the vibrato in this woman's voice. It's totally, totally awesome, for sure!
@wisewonder52 Oh my god....I didn't know she had a new CD out....I just listened to the little preview of I know you By heart...my favorite song of hers...and Im typing this with tears in my eyes...Buying this immediately
My Dad who recently went to God really loved this song. This is absolutely one of the best performances of this piece I have ever, ever heard! God Bless Her.

@Gigchick: they all have wonderful voices that are meaningful? Beyonce? Madonna?? C'mon this woman was a musical genius, and from the heart too. -do you realize what a vast gulf separates Eva from those women? I think the comparisons are apt, especially when you consider the attention and admiration that soulless pop garbage generates. I'd trade every Madonna track ever recorded to have just one more Eva song as sweet as this one.
I wonder if Eva would have ever been broadly recognized as a great singer after her death if it had not been for the recognition of her talent by Great Britain. Her voice is just beautiful. this is so beautiful... i found this song the same day i found my love. i stopped listening to it for awhile... we fought & we went our separate ways, still very angry at each other... then i listened to this again, & i fell in love again... now i wish he'll fall in love with me again so we can be together...
This was one of my mother's favorite songs, which she used to hum around the house. Hearing Eva sing it was a "moment"........... Thanks for posting it.
I never liked this song now i love it to dead what a voice my God yesterday l listened to her music for 4 hours and had tears in my eyes for that time never ever heard a voice like it she will be my angelic angel for life
A singer who might rival Patsy. Her voice carries the same raw emotion which rips at the soul. What sets her apart is the shear simplicity of the solo guitar and the shear perfection in its simplicity.
Joner888 thanks for the upload, ck'52 thanks for the share, and Eva thanks for the inspiration to be good, so I can eventually see and listen to you singing with the angels! You Tube thanks as always for both the space and leaving the light on!
Why do people have to put down other artists to laud another? I love Eva Cassidy and I also love the works by Beyonce, Madonna, et all. They all have wonderful voices that are meaningful. Eva's life was cut down too soon. Thank the powers that be that we have the great opportunity to still hear her angelic voice recorded. I am sure Eva did not ever compare herself to anyone- her music lacks that pettiness.
actually, it's not a matter of opinion. research shows that though quality cannot be defined or measured, it is always recognised. If in 50 years time you randomly let a million people listen to eva and madonna and ask whose voice is better, it wouldn't be 50-50 but (my guess) somewhere around 96-4. The difference between the Eva's and the Madonna's of this world is that the Eva's sing because they have to, and the Madonna's want fame. That's OK, but a different ballgame.
@Gigchick they all have wonderful voices that are meaningful? Beyonce?
@Gigchick I absolutely agree! I love all kinds of versions of various songs. Do not care if they are "belonging" to one group or another. It is so frustrating to deal with the stupid narrow minds!!
@hubbadub21 Are you mad? Some perform for our detriment and their own benefit, Spice girls, need I say more. Gerry and the dreamers, The Mugshots, Lucy and the diamonds, The Stalemates, The Upshots, Percy and the pointers, Suade, Snotgobblers.
@Gigchick Sadly anyone who finds Cassidy's singing drab and often off key has little opportunity for recourse.. 2 sites deny any adverse criticism. Beginning to think my comments are getting home!
I happened to love to sing. One day 5 yrs ago, I found her song by chance. Yes, she was not just singing ... she was telling, whispering those words to me. I can feel the pain of losing loved one, losing her _ the best I ever know. But then it's her voice that also soothed the pain I endure.
I am so glad that someone told me about her music some years ago. I never grow tired of hearing her sing. I don't know anyone else I can say that about. I wish she was still with us. Just an amazing gift and talent. She sings like an angel and now she is singing with the angels.
been listening to evas songs this last hour ive never felt so relaxed and contented in my life her songs seem to take me back to my childhood days when all our family were together and we had our mum and day and we didnt have a care in the world sadly mum and dad gone now one of my brothers passed on and another 4 sibilings emigrated to usa thats why i could listen to this angel sing shes most definitely with the angels in heaven now R.I.P eva you will not be forgotten
Her voice lives on in her music. Her voice is that of an Angels! She brings me comfort when I can't bear the pain I live with everyday from my now terminal lupus.
i like it this way best, just Eva and her guitar. has anyone else been able to make something so simple sound so beautiful? like magic. we all have to go sometime, but Eva will never die. and thank God for youtube, how many millions have discovered Eva here, if there had been youtube back in the day no way Eva could have sang in obscurity for long, but for her, it was probably better the way it was.
She could do anything w/ her voice that she wanted. She left the world, but fortunately for the rest of us, she left her extraordinary musical gifts behind for us to appreciate.

How come the greatest ones all seem to die in obscurity?
Eva, you will never be forgotten!.
Every time I look at the night sky, I can see and hear you...

Gigchick 1 year ago 45
@Gigchick simply a matter of opinion. I'm sure beyonce, madonna, brittany, et al are not offended.
wisewonder52 1 year ago
@wisewonder52
actually, it's not a matter of opinion. research shows that though quality cannot be defined or measured, it is always recognised.

Beyonce?

@Gigchick I absolutely agree! I love all kinds of versions of various songs. Do not care if they are "belonging" to one group or another. It is so frustrating to deal with the stupid narrow minds!!

@Gigchick Hallelujia! live and let live they all perform for our enjoyment. Look in the mirror perfect ones and critique your self!!!
hubbadub21 11 months ago
@hubbadub21 Are you mad? Some perform for our detriment and their own benefit, Spice girls, need I say more. Gerry and the dreamers, The Mugshots, Lucy and the diamonds, The Stalemates, The Upshots, Percy and the pointers, Suade, Snotgobblers.

@Gigchick THEY DON;T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MUSIC IS WHY THEY PUT OTHER ARTISTS DOWN NOTHING BETTER TO DO I QUESS!!
DAVEY500MUSIC 11 months ago
@DAVEY500MUSIC or they simply prefer different artists. ain't nothing wrong with that, davey.
wisewonder52 11 months ago
@DAVEY500MUSIC . Or maybe Cassidy is second/third rate!
ronneesam 10 months ago

Eva Cassidy has the purest voice I've ever heard. It is a shame that we lost her so young.

Her voice lives on in her music. Her voice is that of an Angels! She brings me comfort when I can't bear the pain I live with everyday from my now terminal lupus.

i like it this way best, just Eva and her guitar. has anyone else been able to make something so simple sound so beautiful? like magic. we all have to go sometime, but Eva will never die. and thank God for youtube, how many millions have discovered Eva here, if there had been youtube back in the day no way Eva could have sang in obscurity for long, but for her, it was probably better the way it was.
downeybill 1 year ago
This voice is straight from heaven. Wow! The angels will be singing alongside her now. dear, dear Eva.
