  • Been looking for this song for years. Finally found it. One of my favorite moments of the series.

  • This song is so pretty.

  • Please excuse me while I cry all of the liquids out of my body ;__; Rodama Forever <3

  • Reminds me of the soundtrack Phillip Glass did for the movie 'Mishima.'

  • Like others have said, this isn't the exact version that played in the show. I wish with my all heart they'd release the show's version, though this one is still fantastic.

However, perhaps the song is most powerful with Kara and Sam speaking throughout it.

  • The best kind of music that makes you happy and sad at the same time...

  • So say we all.

  • This is the best piece of OST for BSG

  • does someone know where I can find the version of this that aired on the episode where Kara left Caprica and said goodbye to Sam? It's different than this one.

  • @RebelDreamer

It's titled "Goodbye Sam". It's on the 4th season soundtrack if i remember correctly.

  • @SylarAlpha that's not the same one as when she said her first goodbye to him on Caprica. When he gave the Arrow of Apollo to her to take back, the song was entirely different than the soundtrack version of "A Promise to Return". "Goodbye Sam" from Season 4 is just a slower version of a Promise to Return. What I am really saying is that "Promise to Return" on the soundtrack is not the same one from the show when he gives the arrow. check it out if you don't believe me; it sounds different.

  • @RebelDreamer

I believe you. I've noticed the same thing. I believe it may be due to the violinist who performed most of the work on the episode went into a coma before the soundtrack was recorded. So, sadly, that version does not "officially" exist on a soundtrack. I preferred that version too, it was softer and more bittersweet I think.

  • @SylarAlpha

Wow, he went into a coma? Where did you hear that? That is really unfortunate though. That violinist had such a talent. Their work helped to make that scene more dramatic and memorable. I wish I was able to get that version too somehow. =/

  • @RebelDreamer

    @RebelDreamer

It was on Bear McCreary's blog awhile ago.

"Our recording session for The Farm was among the last that this remarkably gifted violinist ever played. Weeks later, he was involved in a tragic automobile accident, instigated by a drunk driver (circumstances similar to Roslin’s sisters). Ludvig physically survived, but fell into a coma from which he has yet to emerge, years later. "

  • @SylarAlpha that is really sad. =[ I hope he comes out of it soon.

  • @RebelDreamer his name is Ludvig Girland. You can look in youtube for his video.

  • @93n371cfr34k

What am I exactly going to find if I search for him? the episode version of A Promise to Return?

  • @RebelDreamer no, just a live performance of him. It's been years in coma...

  • My mouth lay open from start to finish, I'm still in utter awe, this was one of the best shows produced to date!

  • why would the final 5 not like this?

  • galactica turkey u rock

    galatica best show ever

  • This is the theme of the opera on Kobol, is it not?

  • @Crunor I'm pretty sure thats The Shape of Things to Come you're thinking of.

  • ^

Did you notice how all the soundtrack videos were "thumbed down" by the final 5?

  • @Beagle2063 lol anders is one of the final 5, why would he not like a song about himself

  • The version they play in the episode is actually slightly different than the version on the soundtrack isn't it?

Shame, I like the one from the episode slightly better.

  • "A Promise to Return" - My favorite BSG soundtrack. So Beautiful.

  • So say we all!!

  • Listen to Arvo Pärt - Frates.

I'm telling you, the background music is kinda' like that.

  • Best piece of music in the whole soundtrack

  • wish they would come back and tie it offf properly

  • Im 15 and when i watched this, i learned so much about the beauty of something so perfect as battlestar galatica. it had an amazing soundtrack, flawless story and it explain who we all are or who we could all be. and what we need to do to survive. im lucky i learned this so early and its all thanks to this series. so say we all.

  • 4 Cylons got destroyed and hit the dislike button in hell

  • It's a brilliant title which bears a promise, as the title says. It was soothing to me in darker times.

  • "I'll see you on the other side"

  • i come here every day to experience this beauty. This piece seems to somehow say everything I love about Battlestar better than any words ever could.

  • 'I prefer to go with what you know, until something better turns up'

    -Adama

    So Say We All!

  • Some of the finest modern composition in existence. Without a doubt.

  • one of the best peices in the show. good to see a show that is still composing some real music these days.

  • Agreed!

  • My wife thought that a lot of the music in BSG was classical and it was put into the scenes. She was amazed when I told her that these pieces were composed specifically for the show.

  • this makes me immensly happy inside.

  • they should do a new show and call it baltar-star galactica. callis is just so incredible.

  • @FBDMatt or do a series about the survivors of the attacks

  • exceletné

  • Some of the arpegios (I think thats how its spelled) he uses reminds me kind of James Newton Howard, who composed the music for The Village.

  • glass comes to mind too

  • Well, Bear McCreary is influenced by so many styles. JNH could be one of them.

  • er, not deviation but version -_-

  • this is my favourite deviation of the passacaglia theme

  • Sam Dying in the end was depressing!

  • Aw Sammy <3

  • Battle Star Galactica and Big Fucking Gun, respectively.

  • What i like about Bear is that he can write music that is sad and moving for one scene, then he can write an intense warsong for the scene after that.

    By far my favorite composer.

    So say we all

  • @xVincentVx I got in a debate on here recently with someone who thought he was just the greatest of all time, granted I won that fight. however all composers generally use what came before them and I can hear it in everything he does, it's just the way he does it is so magnificent. this is such a bartok piece but better then bartok could have ever dreamed of putting together

  • this sounds when kara says goodbye to sam in caprica, isn't?

  • Yes when Starbuck promises to come back for him.

  • If this song were 10 minutes long I'd be happy. It's just beautiful.

  • no doubt, one of the best songs in all ost +5

  • DEFINENTLY!

  • God i love this song and the scenes it was played in, definitely one of my favourite pieces from the show - at least for now, I keep discovering gems of Bear's that I hadnt noticed initially.

    Remarkable composer.

  • BDBoystoys1,

haven't you heard the slower version of this song called "Goodbye Sam", part of season 4 sdt? It's such as beautiful.

  • Yeah, it's incredible. Infact, the whole Daybreak score was frakking beautiful and collected and rekindled aspects of previous scores perfectly. Bear really outdid himself with it.

Hearing the 'Promise to Return' melody really brought their final moments home.

  • thanks for uploading all the great songs GalacticaTurkey much appreciated.

  • anyone have this song to download? It'd be much appreciated!

  • you can convert this straight from youtube on zamzar

  • After I read Lord of the Rings, I didn't think a better story could ever be told.

After I watched Star Wars, I didn't think a better soundtrack could ever be composed.

After finishing Battlestar, I was proved wrong on both accounts. Since the first caveman drew a tiger on the wall, this is the greatest form of entertainment ever conceived.

  • Thankyou!

    I agree x

  • That is well said my BSG friend!

  • I would say that the series is on a higher level than entertainment, at least for me.

  • @grimesjd So say we all!!

  • @grimesjd Best you dont watch Babylong 5 then.

  • @kingc0m notice how he/she didn't even dignify that with a response?

  • @OtakuGarou Notice how Grime's post was over a year ago? :P

  • @Schriiii I know.... ? i actually have a few comments that are the highest rated ones on a few videos on youtube myself (nothing to be proud of incidentally) but one of those comments are over a year old as well... I still get comments from other people about them who agree/disagree, and I'm totally able to respond to them whenever I want.... so I really don't know what you're trying to say...

  • @grimesjd So say we all!

  • @grimesjd So Say We ALL!

  • @grimesjd SO SAY WE ALL

  • @grimesjd So say we all !

  • I loved when they played this song during the Caprica 6 and Baltar run with Hera in the ship to the temple/bridge. This song is both hopeful and sad. It's sad because of all that has been lost and the people who have been lost during the trip. Its hopeful because it shows us that life will go on and you should show optimism and love to the future. We won't know who helped them but I think the beings may be part of one of the cycles that want humans and machines to finally break it.

  • I loved that part as well. The scene is like everything that we've been seeing snippets of falling into place. It's like there's always something greater at work. My favorite usage of this was when we first heard it; in The Farm, when Anders gives her the arrow and says goodbye to her.

  • I tear up when I watch that scene. It's so cinematically played out.

  • I was a weeping mess when this was playing during Kara's goodbye to Sam last night. I hope they found each other "on the other side."

  • yeah I'm so glad McCreary revisited this piece one final time during the finale. It was touching.

  • @rhysenn I didn't know until recently that the score played at Kara's goodbye to Sam was totally different from the one that we are hearing now. The one done at that time was produced or played by an individual that got hit in a car accident in Vancouver and is in a coma. That's why it seems like it wasn't full because he only played/produced a small part and didn't complete the rest.

  • I adore this piece.

  • просто спасибо за хорошую музыку

  • Yes, thank you :D

  • I think it wasn't Kobol but Caprica.

  • I belive that it was the Arrow of Apollo not Athena.

  • Arrow of Apollo. Got it. Thank you. Man I'm really screwin' up.

  • she left Sam on Caprica.

and she had to get The Arrow of Apollo to The Tomb of Athena on Kobol

  • Thanks. Left Caprica and then later went to Kobol for the arrow. I really do need to rewatch this stuff.

  • she left sam on caprica and got the arrow of apollo on Caprica because she went back to her apartment, there aren't any of those on Kobal!

  • You are correct. Thank you. What I was trying to same (3 months ago) is that the Arrow of Apollow (on Caprica) was taken TO Kobol for its purpose (showing the fleet the way to Earth). I should have been more explanatory (like Starbuck049 was). Sorry and thanks again.

  • it was Caprica. she left sam on not Kobol

  • For what it's worth, getting the names mixed up like that reminds me of a scene with Tigh, when he confuses the Temple of Athena with the Temple of Artemis. Easy to get things confused. :p

  • Thank you for understanding. I am a huge fan of the show and feel embarassed to be making these kind of mistakes. After about the third correction it gets a little annoying. My email keeps getting notified that their is a reply and I hope it is something besides correcting me but it appears that people just won't let it go that I was wrong. Finally a new perspective that isn't reitterating the same info repeatedly. I would have fixed my commment but YouTube doesn't allow editing.

  • Yeah, it's always fun when the person correcting you doesn't notice that nine other people have already done so.

At least it makes you popular. In manner of speaking.

  • Hahaha! I loved when he said that. Saul is such a kick in the pants. It's the little off hand remarks and details like that that make this show so darn brilliant. So human. Even if half the characters are 'robots'. :)

  • Agreed. Everything in the show is just so brilliant, the way they've created this entire new universe, teeming with a life of it's own. All the characters, every line, every piece of the musical score, everything is full of genius.

I still don't like Tigh, though he is an interesting character none the less.

  • this song is so amazing. it`s really deep somehow.

  • I love this song

    It's so sophisticated

  • It owns

  • so say we all.

  • @Morethanbobsonofbob

    So say we all

  • This was the song used when Kara and Sam first met. Who would have thought they would get married

  • This is such a great song i lov it

  • Someone should post the actual scene this track was used in.

  • What a great track. Thank you for uploading this.
