What a sad persona, all his views are that of other people. None of his ideas are his own. You can spend your life smugly quoting whoever you like if it makes you feel smart but it makes you look and sound intellectually vain and desperately patronising. If he was white he'd be laughed at and called egotistical.
@cmomofilm He is providing a grand context, obviously heavily influenced from the ideas of others. Just because he does profusely quote others doesn't make him totally unoriginal. Have you ever read any of his work?
@cmomofilm Quoting is different from stealing, you retard. By quoting you're directly stating you're borrowing someone else's idea. You're just another anti-intellectual hillbilly that is intimidated by people who are clearly more intelligent than yourself. I bet you can't even understand the words coming out of his mouth, quote or not.
@mburke000 For your information I have a 1st and am nearing my PhD. Why you seem to feel so threatened by my opinion of someone you don't know would suggest to me that you think defending them will make you appear intelligent by proxy. It doesn't. And that you randomly seemed to come up with "retard" and "hillbilly" to describe me makes me think that you most likely are a retarded hillbilly.
@cmomofilm Considering you're near PhD (congrats, by the way), it surprises me you see this man as not smart. Why? Because no PhD candidate will be considered if his papers aren't referenced. Nothing you said in your thesis will be completely yours, or it simply will not be accepted. You should know, more than the rest of us, what Dr. West does is ethically the appropriate thing to do.
@thisischrisbliss What I was criticising wasn't how he would write a thesis, but how he speaks. Everything I've ever seen him speak on he talks like that. That is what I have a problem with if you read my original comment. He is the most intellectually vain person I've ever seen talk.
@cmomofilm Him quoting people is just him using examples to further prove his point, that doesnt mean he doesnt have original ideas and believe it or not but most concepts and ideas are inspired by 1 or more other ideas anyway
Lots of empty words that mean nothing, just a lot of bullshit. However, people are impressed by empty words. Look at the comments on this video, or even religion and politics. People speak with empty words and others follow.
@jackskellingtonsora hahaha Cornel West is one of the greatest minds of the last 100 years. One doesn't become a professor at Princeton and accomplish as much as he has with "empty words that mean nothing." Pick up a book and read the writers he mentions, or better yet, pick up a dictionary so you can at least know what all those "empty words" mean.
This "lecture" covers in 7 minutes what it will take you and me and anyone else years to understand, the words aren't epmty, you just don't get it.

Yes one does become a professor at Princeton, or any college really, with empty words. Refer to the earlier comment, people are impressed by empty words and bullshit. Just take a look at any philosophy department in any college and you will find a large amount of bullshit.
Your attempt to call me racist seems to me as racist. Not to mention ad hominum and a whole bunch of other logical fallacies. But I'll just let those go for now.
Ya, it's cool. The idea that a black guy can't be criticized for anything without someone calling the guy criticizing him racist is saying that a black guy can't get anywhere in life without having the fact that he is black follow him. That's why I find it racist. If black guys can't be criticized than all they will ever be is black.
Haha, in your description of yourself you have the gall to align yourself with theater and downplay pop-bands when you yourself read books made for and loved by 12 year olds, quite a sophisticated individual you are I must say.
Especially when people associated with theater such as Shakespeare were literary geniuses and plays were generally involved with philosophical conundrums and ideas. You're a fucking joke kid, go watch more television on the idiot box.
1. Ad hominem. Even if I was going to dignify your idiotic attacks on me personally, I would have to call you a snob for looking down on someone just because they happen to like or dislike certain medium.
2. Shakespeare was not in the mainstream. His plays were looked down upon by the "moral guardians" as it were because theater was associated with the "common people." If someone said they liked theater, people like yourself would have said just what you said about me.
@jackskellingtonsora 1. You're calling me an idiot complaining that I look down at others? Read your own description on your page with the obvious superiority complex comparing to things such as Hip-Hop, Kayne West which accounts to Pop-music and the majority of people, being lesser than Broadway tunes and musicians.
@jackskellingtonsora 2. Who said I ever thought theater itself was a high moral standard, the only thing I said of it was that it was linked to philosophy and yes going back to Ancient Greece actors and the like received extremely low wages and it was thought of as a low class job. If you're going to try to come back at me, don't put words in my mouth.
@jackskellingtonsora If you're going to continue jumping around what I actually said then don't respond back. Read my original post and respond to that, it might take you a few times to actually comprehend it.
"Sophistication" is all in the minds of people who think they are better than others for one reason or another. It has nothing to do with the real world. As such, I reject the notion.
I don't watch a lot of television, but even if I did, it would not mean a thing.
And I fail to see how any of your post has to do with anything but trying to personally attack me.
This man seems very pretentious, and his 'philosophical' ideas were vague to no end and lacking any kind of real substance - are his written works like this as well?
@Babylon3000 Well you should be proud to be human. However it is hard with all those idiots like people that are full of prejudice and mind numbing music tastes and use arguments like: shut up.
I love how Bethooven Sonata #32 is on the top suggestion videos to the side, it means many watched this video then clicked over to hear that song cuz Dr. West mentioned it lol
For now I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, because he may have taken into account that he's talking to a stupid audience (the american people). Still he should be aware that educated people might get to see these videos, and they will call him on his BS.

I can't believe this has less than 20,000 hits. Everyone should stop and listen to this man speak if for no other reason than the laugh at the end when his last word is "Sheeeeet."
WOW !!! I just learned something- I always kinda wondered how is it possible to really GET the WHOLE picture of things and here is someone I consider one of the most inteligent people alive today telling me it's basically impossible; all we can do is continue the QUEST for truth. I'd love to hang with this guy everyday!!!!!
The many intellectual refrences displays his passion and homage to other thinkers besides himself..He is overjoyed to reflect on their work..I think its respect for the world of the mind and regard for the souls that have toiled and cultivated a great instrument..Love is Love!
I agree with familyguyrocks89...He talks fluff. "Truths as a way of lifes instead of a set of propositions that correspond to the world" How is it that these two concepts are mutually exclusive so as to require one over the other?...He's an intelligent man , be he does not formulate comprehensive ideas. He uses the words "love" and "justice" a lot, however, these are not clearly defined concepts so i have no idea what he's getting at.
@ifinoxonifi I don't think he implies that they are mutually exclusive, just one is more valuable than the other. The overarching theme of his philosophy on truth is to first examine yourself critically. When you begin there, truth becomes a part of your day to day fabric which will override the "propositions that correspond to the world". I think Warren Buffett talks about needing an "inner score card" that supercedes the "external scorecard".
The word "instead" does more than imply, it makes a distinction...If that is his overarching theme of truth, then indeed, it sounds like garbled folk psychology.
@ifinoxonifi I'm a little unclear on your point as you seem to be fixated on that statement. Is it that you disagree with his philosophy or you don't see the difference in the two ways of living?
I'm not fixated on that point, it was simply an example. He is a well educated intelligent man, but, it appears as if he likes to flaunt this by throwing around references and words that are intended to impress, rather than provide any substantial ideas. I'm not saying he has no substantial ideas, just that he is unnecessarily "wordy". Perhaps i'm wrong. I did read "race matters" and found it to be poorly constructed/poorly argued. That's just my opinion though.
I just listened to Beethoven's 32nd sonata Opus 111. It is intellectually stimulating because it just fades into the background, allowing a mind to do what it does best. . .think.
so many intellectual references...a LITTLE pretentious, but what does one expect? Regardless, I still love when intellectuals make literary and other references. Makes me want to go read them even more.
Cornel West talked about Plato banning the flute. In Plato's Republic, Socrates banned the flute from his hypothetical civilization, which served as an analogy, so he could determine what the benefits of justice truly were.
@Bremerxxxx Eh... he's alowed a missed reference here an there. As much as he's read and written, eventually a random fact or two are going to get mixed up.
@Bremerxxxx lol nope, Socrates definetly did not ban the flute. Plato was just using Socrates as a character for his opinions in his book "Plato Republic". Socrates probably never had any of those ideas about justice.
@AdioEmerica but this guy is just chatting fuck loads of shit in between quoting people... lots and lots of people. he's so eratic, there's no substance or argument... he's just saying loads of stuff...
"...it looks at truth as a way of life rather than a set of propositions that correspond to a set of things." This man has read his share of Ludwig Wittgenstein. His word choice is flawless.
@aiynaiy Wow! Thats a heck of claim! I would disagree, but more than that I'd be interested in hearing why you think Professor West is so intellectually hollow. I consider Professor West's thought to be prophetically HALLOWED, owing to his constantly challenging other intellectuals to be socially and politically engaged.
@aiynaiy Frankly, I'm hesitant to answer your question without asking why you would preface a conversation with this particular question. But what the heck: no, I'm not white.
@mmantech Ive visted Aiynaiy's profile, and watched the videos they have linked there. Im almost certain that this person doesnt have an opinion that has anything to do with improving society. They only believe in further segregation of society. Funny perspective considering that s/he is african american.

"...it looks at truth as a way of life rather than a set of propositions that correspond to a set of things." This man has read his share of Ludwig Wittgenstein. His word choice is flawless.

Cornell West is one of the most intellectually hollow minds of our time within the struggle for Justice.

@bens3rd I'd be glad to tell you what makes Mr. West's intellect hollow, but first I must ask you, are you a white person?
aiynaiy 1 year ago
@aiynaiy Frankly, I'm hesitant to answer your question without asking why you would preface a conversation with this particular question. But what the heck: no, I'm not white.

@bens3rd Do you believe we live in a global system of white supremacy?

@aiynaiy hollow? elaborate further.

@mmantech Ive visted Aiynaiy's profile, and watched the videos they have linked there. Im almost certain that this person doesnt have an opinion that has anything to do with improving society. They only believe in further segregation of society. Funny perspective considering that s/he is african american.

Love the line about throwing a Mark Twain book against the wall because it makes you feel so alive. Great clip.
