Flames out the exhaust is usually a product of valve overlap and exhaust. It's basically unburnt fuel coming through and igniting on the hot exhuast tip when it hits the air at the end of the exhaust pipe. In aspirated cars it's large valve overlap which helps scavenging and performance in the top end. Turbo cars, due to the large amounts of fuel at full noise. Normally happens after high RMP then throttle snapped shut.

hmm, k i only know so much about cars, but isnt this afterfire and not backfire? rich mix for whatever reason/hot unburnt fuel exiting exhaust system and mixing with air to cause a fire/mini splosion if u wish. isnt backfire BACK up the intake? like my car does this lol, its a grocery getter altima with headers. feel free to flame on me, more knowledge to me. :D

What your describing is essentially the same thing, just try and picture the exhaust moving very quickly, and when it reaches the outside, more oxygen is available so it burns up quicker. Inside the exhaust system, there is limited oxygen so the heat and gas fumes travel until they receive enough oxygen to ignite, into flames.

Backfire refers to when you get ignition with the exhaust valve still open, sounding like a gunshot. Flames out the tail pipe is just unburned combustion fuel burning off while letting off the gas after high reving.... this is normal

if that was a backfire you would have heard an explosion.a backfire is an explosion that occours out side of the combustion chamber. try moving to detriot. old domestics seem to do it alot. yes there was fire and it came out the back of the car. he down shifted and excess fuel that wasnt burned went out the exaust. if you drive on the track you should know the difference.
