@stevevandien Fine pianist? That's like saying Mozart was a fine composer. Nat was one of the greatest Jazz pianists that ever lived. All the Jazz piano greats cite him as a major influence. Those trio records afford the listener the chance to hear his genius and mastery of Jazz piano playing.
Damn! The man didn't even bother to sit in front of the piano properly. He didn't even use sustenuto or the other pedals. He sat sidesaddle, for cryin' out loud. And the sweetest sounds to ever eminate from the ivory spewed forth. All this, and a voice nonpariel in the annals of music history. Where did he come from? I want to go there.
Mesmerizing. You forget what an incredible piano player he is because his singing is so effortlessly beautiful...as is his piano playing. What a giant he was.
Magical contact between the singing and the piano playing . . . Just a very few knew that . . . Sound of his voice is just the jazz itself . . . And what an entertainer (but also what a musician)!!!!! Make you feel easy in a love-dreamwold. The only one! Thank you Nat!
What a pleasure to read a sane comment for a change. Nat was probably the most underrated jazz pianist of all time. I hated his stuff when Oscar Peterson played piano. Just another cocktail pianist ,for the most part, who didn't have a fkin' clue of how to accompany a singer. And, speakin' of underrated, Oscar Moore blew Charlie Christian's doors off.
I feel the same about Peterson's work behind Nat. As great a soloist as Oscar was, he was no accompanist. I can say the same for many guitar greats. If you listen to my posted work, I am accomplished on the guitar, but not "flashy." This is more compatible with accompanying a singer, and many singers have complimented me on how carefully I play behind them. Why? Because I play behind my own voice most of the time.
@nachodaddy hey daddy Peterson's problem was he wanted to be the next Art Tatum that is why he drowned out others when playing piano.Listen to this song when Cole and Peterson are on stage together.
My dad was a HUGE Nat Cole fan and he played this song for me and asked if I could sing it. I learned it and did it for him...its one of my favorites!!!
no you're wrorng. listen what Nat says about his tune: Let there be love... he and G. Shearing recorded this tune "some month ago". So it was just a few month later of the of the Shearing-Cole album, which was recorded in December of 1961. So the date had to be in early sping time of 1962. an other thing. Nat introduces a number Rambling Rose, and it souds like that this is the first time he ever sings it to the public. the recording. date of Rambling Rose was in June in 1962.
I feel the presence of love when I listen to Nat King Cole sing his songs ... do you? Nat King Cole, you were beautiful then, you're beautiful now, and so shall you be for eternity. Applause! Special thanks for posting.
It absolutely, positively does not get any better than this. I wish I could have talked to you Nat, you were the best ever.

An all time great who died way to young. It's to bad he attributed the smoothness of his voice with smoking packs of cigarettes per day.

This is where Nat was at his BEST, with his own piano background. NO ONE, even the jazz greats, blended with his vocals as well as he did.
