  • A true guitar virtuoso : ) I like the style and tone of this. Beautiful playing, I wish I could play jazzy guitar with a bit of awesome shred to it.

  • whats wrong with the "shred" aspect of his playing ?=??

  • Anyone know's wich pickups he's using in that particular guitar ?

    Btw freakin awesome dude.

  • hey, is there a way that i can get a full dvd or sth of this show? it's so awesome!!!!

  • I never thought a "best player in the world" tag could be qaunterfied, I always thought it to be a silly and arbitary statement but after listening to GG, i think he may well be. Outside the classical genre anyway. just my opinion.

  • es el mejor guitarrista electrico que he visto, no entiendo los 7 desacuerdos de el video, talvez se equivocaron de mano, o sera que son sordos?

  • I want to add that I believe the greatest guitarist of all time is Shawn Lane, but Guthrie, being still alive, is certainly the best today.

  • Why the hell is he so underrated? I see guitarists all the time who are fantastic, but didn't "make it", take for example, Andy Timmons.

But seriously, Guthrie Govan is one of the BEST guitarists in the WORLD.

  • i cant believe that all he played is just improvised

    thats so fuckin' mindblowing

an ya guthire is the best !!

  • Dude, not only is Guthrie rippin' it up hardcore style, that drummer back there is tearin' it up to dude he's great

  • Were do i get more of these vids...

  • I want to see Jordan Rudess and Guthrie Govan jam together. I think the world would implode.

  • OMG so good

  • lol @ 2:08

  • He really is the best guitarist alive today. He is a chameleon. Can play any syle and better yet fuse them together. A tru master for sure.

  • i think it's the highest compliment to guthrie to say that he very likely may be as good technically/melodically and musically as the late great shawn lane rip guthrie is easily one of my top 2 favorite guitarists him and shawn lane are 1st and 2nd they are and were such great musicians of the highest caliber

  • thats it!! i quit guitar! .,.,.,lol ,., he is hauling so much ass

  • Did you just hear what Guthrie said on the guitar?! That's right, what he SAID on the guitar. I'm not a big fan of Fusion style. But Guthrie is one of the very rare musicians that actually SAYS something with the guitar. It's like he's telling you a story and carrying on a conversation.

  • casually throws in some iron man at 2:08. Guthrie has certainly become my favorite guitarist. its such a pleasure to listen to him! By the way the rest of the band are virtuoso players as well ;-)

  • Well yeah, this guys certainly got some damn good chops, thats for sure. But best ever... i think not. All of what he's playing is just fast arpeggios and single note scale runs. Complex and musical as it is, its NOTHING compared to something Tommy Emmanuel might play. Tommy can walk the bass, play chords, and leads on top of it all, simultaneously on an acoustic. For those that dont know him, please look him up. He's phenomenal. No disrespect to this guy tho, he's good for sure.

  • 1:06 = fur elise ???

Wooow this guy is amazing xD

I heard some licks from other songs, even some famous 'rock and roll' on other shreds i can't recall right now...

Now I come back and see his intense shredding and it's not a meaningless shred, it seems carefully planned ;O

  • Spain :))

  • PEGADA MUITO CRUEL !!! THE BEST ....

  • this guy is all jazz but he sounds fantastic even to a metal lover..

  • Anyone knows the sax player's name here? Is he Joshua Redman?

  • lol at 2:08 ironman

  • holy crap when did jesus come back

  • Haha sounds great! He kind of quotes 'Fur Elise' at 1:06 :)

    Bugrahan

  • I love it when players are gifted with incredible speed and they actually take the time to learn their scales and develop a more sophisticated sound and phrasing with their shred skills govan rules.

  • Alan Holdsworth. Check him out... even guthrie would call him the best :)

  • All I am going to say is..... look up Alan Holdsworth

  • someone has to say something remotely bad or else outsiders will think we're a cult and shouldnt be taken seriously....umm, he needs more synth.

  • My god, that was just sensational. What he played just melted into the music

  • pure class, technique, note choice, tone, the lot.

  • i would like to see more videos o this band :D!!!

  • damn your right goobic!!!!!! halelujhia

  • I love the way he just bursts into Für Elise.

  • why cant all musicians just not gig unless they are this good it would stop the flood of shit music :D

  • Anyone else catch the Iron Man lick? Reefrikkindonkulous

  • They say that there is always someone better, no matter how good you get? Well, his name is Guthrie and I don't think there's anybody better than him. He is a true virtuoso of the instrument and in my opinion is the best guitar player in the world.

  • im pretty sure anyone who listens to guthrie realizes that there is just no one greater than him.

  • @saybis True, but i would like to mention Hutchings in the same league as Govan, other than that, i cant find anyone thats even close....

  • the concept of better guitar player is totally subjective

  • If he was officially declared the best, I certainly wouldn't argue!

  • the better guitarist never exists, due to all soloist guitarists haves their own style.. your opinion is totally subjective. like said Dave Weiner: the music is art .. not to be judged

  • same, same, same. i heard of him through watching vids of alex hutchings one of my other favs, but guthrie dominates

  • i'm a HUGE paul gilbert fan but i'll have to admit GG has the goods

  • @goobic Shawn Lane and Jason Becker stand with Guthrie, IMO.

  • @goobic that's not essesncially true there are different guitarist for everything Guthrie annot shred for crap but is extreemly melodic... pit him against steve vai and hes done!

  • @goobic Well, I would say maybe Shawn Lane is a good match up to Guthrie but even then, I would go with Guthrie. His musical diversity, improvisations are breathtaking. Yes, breathtaking.

  • closest thing we will get to having shawn lane back.

  • @goobic Guthrie Govan is to electric as Tommy Emmanuel is to acoustic. Anything either of them play is a testament to what can be done on the guitar. True musicians.

  • This is some of the best guitar playing I have seen in a long time.

  • fucking love this guy

  • amazing!!!

  • He's too awesome...

  • Whoa!

    Guthrie never disappoints

  • I'd kill for an "off" night like this.

  • SPAIN!

    Sweet action.

  • He looks like a guitar playing Merlin.

  • he's most def. a wizard for what he does with a guitar lol

  • Comment removed

  • that suhr guitar has a sick top on it

  • Guthrie and Greg Howe are two of my favorite guitarists. Both very underrated for guitarists of their caliber.

  • greg howe isnt so underrated. but guthrie is

  • you said it right! they are seriously OMG.

  • Not too sure about that. Some people who have actually seen him play say "He's the best ever". It's more the fact he's totally unheard of. If you ever go down to the basement on a Thursday evening it's generally filled with around 20 people to see an amazingly good band, not just guitar but every member of the band! This is crazy for a band of that kind of calibre.

  • ...is EROTIC CAKES ever going to be available on cd again?

  • his fretting hand at 00:53, holy shit.

  • Can you get this DVD anywhere?

  • Sorry, a DVD isn't available. We were planning on producing and distributing the DVD but this wasn't one of Guthrie's better nights. Yes, Guthrie will have some off-nights as well. He's human. But even Guthrie's "off" nights are amazing to behold as these vids attest.

  • I wish my "off" nights were like this, damn it XD.

  • this is an "off" night? 0_0

  • @alexkhan2000 it sounds pretty good, but it does sound a bit harder to jam over than what i've usually heard guthrie jam over

  • @alexkhan2000 How was that not one of his better nights? That was amazing.

  • the best guitarist in the world!!

  • yeah, he also does a variation on "Fur Elise" at 1:06 . pretty sweet...

  • his phrasing kills me e.v.e.r.y.t.i.m.e.!

  • me too Guthrie Govan is amazing

  • This guy rules!!!

Haha and does anyone else notice... at 2:09 he plays a bit of "Iron Man"??? XDDD Fucking awesome!!!

  • Yeah, he also throws in a variation of "Fur Elise" at 1:06 . pretty sweet...

  • "Oh dont stop there! That solo along with the sax sounded beautiful! "

    That's the head dude...

  • Phenomenal as always Mr Guthrie Govan.

  • Govan is incredible. Not one of the other "shredders" can do this. He is actually playing through changes, not just mindless blues jams or diatonic chord sequences. Stupid that he is in the shredder category in the first place, but I guess that's his own fault... He plays fast just a little too often IMHO. Playing fast is just another means of expression. Or should be, for a musician of this calibre.

  • Yeah, I know what you mean, but that "shred" aspect of his playing is an integrated part of his style. He makes no apologies for it. As a teen, he was a fan of Vai, Satch, Racer X, Cacophony, MacAlpine, Howe, etc. As he grew older, he's studied the likes of McLaughlin, DiMeola, Lane, Henderson, Morse, EJ, etc., so a lot of notes is simply what he does and he uses speed tastefully. I'm sure he will continue to mature and tone down the shred aspect as time goes by. ;)

  • @alexkhan2000 Exactly. There is a lot of top notch players that can play as fast as he can, like Biréli Lagrene or Sylvain Luc or bebopers. They are not categorized as "shredders" though because they are Jazz style guitarists. When you listen to Govan, you can hear that he liked and listened to "shredders" a lot and hear it in his playing. Although he can have some jazzy approach in his style, the shred style is still his main one.

  • Yeah agreed, playing through changes is quite difficult. Having all those notes change that quickly on ya. It's tougher than just wanking over Emin.

  • I still don't understand why people see shred as a bad thing, it's just another way of expressing different emotions. Sure you can like it or not, but guthrie is capable of saying a lot of thing with 1 note or with 1000 notes, and I just love when he does both!

  • Its just that the word shred generally means "shred Metal" or "neo Classical shred", people don't think of fusion as shred. People necver complain about greg howe, allan holdsworth or sean lane being too fast!

Also, this video made my day - my favorite guitarist soloing over my favorite tune! Downloaded!

  • Pople should get that 'shred' word out of their heads. The only thing we should ask our selves is: Is it good music or not??

  • same here

  • FINALLY SOMEONE WHO GETS IT!!!

thanks dude, my faith in human kind just rose a bit, again..

  • @funkatic I personally think Petrucci is the only other 'Shredder' that could do this to be fair.

  • Oh dont stop there! That solo along with the sax sounded beautiful!

  • the way he could think all that amazing notes at that speed is incredible! bebopping!

  • One hell of a fuckin' player ain't he?!! Wow! It's not just the technique, it is the CONTINUOUS stream of ideas that are melodically great at that tempo which is really amazing.

  • Man I so agree,I have been missing Shawn Lane since he passed more and more each year..And in comes Govan,He is like a breath of fresh air for me at least .I havent been this stoked about a new guitar player in yrs,RIP Shawn and thank you god for Guthrie Govan he is helping fill that void. Though nobody can replace Shawn, its great to see someone this amazing making the scene..Cmoun..

  • Amazing player, really enjoyed it.

  • Too good, blown away, what a great guitarist.

  • genius

  • I'd like to see Guthrie trade riffs with Gambale. That would be crazy

  • omg hes so amazing

anyone else catch the musical allusions to Fur Elise and Ironman?

    lol

    Guthrie is ridiculous!

  • yeah i definitely got it haha. you can kinda see the saxophonist laughing

  • One of the best. I love how he starts to quote "Iron Man" at 2:10. :-)

  • i would give three chicken and gravy sandwiches to have that guitar

  • rofl!

It's a very good guitar then

  • his note choice is too good

  • Man, what talent! what I'd give to be able to improvise like that. I'd like to see the rest of the video though...

  • excellent. love the tone on his guitar. yay phrasing!

  • very well said

  • It would be great to hear and watch music like this on radio and TV but no instead we get shit.

Well done Guthrie. I like your style as it's rather entertaining.

  • check out some Charlie Parker man

  • Too many notes haha we got a jazz virgin in the house.

  • "Get the hang of" what, exactly?

  • YAY iron man... and i think i heard something similar to "fur elise"

  • it looks fretless

  • is there a full version anywhere?

  • Too many notes imho, but awesome articulation.

  • NO SUCH THING AS TO MANY NOTES IN JAZZ!

    xD

  • ur an idiot unless that was being sarcastic lol

  • To quote Amadeus;

"Too many notes. Just cut a few and it'll be perfect"

"Which few did you have in mind, majesty?"

  • That scene pretty much sums up the anti-shred movement perfectly.

  • Great quote fella!

  • epic win.

  • this is the best version of spain i've ever heard! beautiful phrasing and timming!! it just fits perfect with the drums and the bass! this guy is phenomenal!!

  • his brother seth govan on the bass.. is awesome, both govan's brothers are virtuoso's

    amazing family lol

  • I thought that guy looked like him!

  • LOL this is nice but dont you think Chick Corea's piece is performed best by him and the elektric band

  • Well personally I believe no cover can ever be as good as the original because only the original writer of the song can truly express how the song should be; after all he wrote it. But still, some covers are just freakin' sweet, like this one. This one definitely rocks out and I'd probably say I like this one as much as the original.

  • well, hendrix' version of Dylan's all along the watchtower must have expressed it better, since Bob himself started playing that version of it =D

  • "personally I believe no cover can ever be as good as the original because only the original writer of the song can truly express how the song should be"

Well, song writers aren't necessarily great arrangers/performers. I can think of many examples, but one that always comes to mind is Mad World, written by Roland Orzabal. It was performed as a pop song by Tears for Fears, but 20 years later Michael Andrews arraigned a slower, starker version (sung by Gary Jules) which is MUCH more powerful.

  • that's a brilliant song!! Also shows it doesn't need to be complicated for it to be wonderfull music :) I think there's a very important difference though: if you simply cover a song and try to play like the original you won't be able to express it any better than the original, but if you put your own twist to it it's YOU who's expressing the song and interpreting the original and that's why Gary Jules' version is so much better.

  • i don't think it's about whether or not the people who listen to it like it better than the original. there are certain feelings, experiences and memories that went into writing a song that the songwriter and the songwriter alone possess, and there isn't really any way that someone who covers a song would be able to express what the song tries to convey properly because those experiences and memories haven't happened to them. So i think you can like a cover better, but it can never BE better.

  • Watching guthrie govan makes me realise that I am nothing but a piece of shit player

  • dude you just have to keep practicing and believe that you can be great.

  • me too..

    but keep it playing.. lmao

  • I guess the million dollar question is....where can i get the cd?

  • Guthrie has one of the best techniques and phrasings around. He does EVERYTHING.

  • I love the part where he fits in the theme for "Für Elise" Pure geanious !

    Thumbs up for Guthrie !

  • Where does he do that?

  • 1:07

  • fur elise: at 1:08

  • around 1:08

  • 1:07

  • nice spot... never would have caught that shit

  • what kind of guitar is he playing? it's sweet

  • Why the hell doesn't he release an album of tunes with the Fellowship, seriously. This is where he really shines.

Ed, I'm aware you personally know him, please ask, (or pester!);)

  • why is it that i got a thumbs down? hes playing the changes and using outside notes! i was tryin to give an answer to a question somebody asked!

  • I cry when I go to sleep after watching Guthrie...he´s just insane.

  • Some players make me want to go practice, when I see Govan I just want to set my axe on fire and throw it away. Maybe try gardening....

  • i would kinda have to agree man

  • thats why it is so important to learn EVERYTHING!

  • the man of one thousand genres..

  • he doesnt use his pinky too often

  • Hes got a lot of greg howe influence on this i think

  • I have no idea what this man is playing but it just sounds INCREDIBLE!! :)

I'm going to get some of his music <3

  • A custom Suhr guitar, if I recall.

  • what mode is this?

  • god mode :P

  • it sounds like he's using some harmonic minor... other than that, playing over the changes and using some chromatics here and there

  • and also diminished licks are abound :D

  • Guthrie is the man!

  • Is this on a DVD or something?

  • man this guy does whatever the hell he wants to do , lol Alien I swear

  • does he do classical?

  • classical as in using spanish guitar? no he doesn't as far as i know, he plays electric guitar but i'm sure he can play classical influenced/ neoclassical stuff if he wants to on electric, like becker. this guy can play almost any style, check out this video on youtube: "Guthrie Govan plays: Who's Best?"

  • 1:07

  • his fingers are like legs on a typewriter, shiit.

  • everything he plays sounds so deliberate, not just flailing scales around in the same key. flawless

  • yeah his phrasing is very very good! in any style, rock/jazz, neoclassical etc. amazing player!

  • he should be swedish!

  • And i don't think i should have to tell you that this guy is WAY better than Jimmy Page!! listen for yourself and you be the judge!!!
