  • Love the guy, but he butchered one of the best songs ever composed. I don't care for his rendition at all... you just don't completely alter a classic until it's unrecognizable! Pointless!

  • Sorry, can't see any relation to the song... why not just compose your own music? lol

  • In Poland don't exist ipanema , for happiness to all polish girls .

  • Se parece a yuyin

  • the 2nd string looks so strange!! Is pat using some alternative tunning..??

  • As Jazz has seen its Glories Fade,,,Its Idols Vanish and Stars Decay,,,,Yet shall some tribute of regret be paid,?,,, When its long life has reached its Final Day,,, A Pat Metheny Puritan would say,,, The Evil Kenny G,, Dug its Grave

  • I'm sorry Pat, but this song isn't "The girl from Ipanema", it seems another song, the accords that you make aren't the accords of Jobim, look it with more attention. I really don't like it.

  • @Lidiaponomareva Not for everyone's taste, but realize it's his rendition in a totally different arrangement. The main melody in the verses is there if you listen for it.

    Beautifully played.

  • @Lidiaponomareva Pat doesn't need your apology or your request that he look at the song with more attention. There are only about three or four people in the world who can play this song correctly, and Pat is one of them. Once you can do that, you have license to put your own interpretation on it, and that's what Pat's doing here. Yes, the song is most definitely 'The Girl from Ipanema.' Whether or not you like it is another story.

  • it's so nice to whitness a magicians work - thank you for the music! :-)

  • cant say I like this

  • Great stuff ....Just so so creative ... One of my favourite Jobim songs ... Pat you are so great at creating wonder melodies from standards...quite amazing , Thanks for posting

  • This man is a hero. seriously. an american folk hero.

  • Holy shiiiiit!! This guy is an animal. I wonder what the tuning is.

  • Cool arrangement and sweet voicings ..I will say Hi to Joe Diorio for you Pat : )

  • Genius as always.

  • Oh my god, once I found the melody and understood how he was stretching the chords just outside of the original framework it became one of the most mind-blowingly profound and achingly tender interpretations I've ever heard. Fucking Pat Metheny. Fucking God!

  • Yeah, he really knows hot to annoying.

Listening this for more then 5 seconds can lead to suicide.

  • Wonderfull!!!! Monster!!!!!

  • you,re havin a laugh

  • this is an effing disrespect to the original song.

  • Metheny deconstructs and reconstructs the most played brazilian music outside Brazil, crossing paths of the melody, at the same time so distant and so close of it. Walks between tunes by Jobim and himself, defining what is a personal reading of a masterpiece work of a genius by another genius.

And he makes sounds the sound of silence.

  • Metheny, who makes it sound all the sounds of his 42 strings guitar in "Sound of Silence", in "Girl From Ipanema" does not play, making the listener imagine the quiet notes of this song, known worldwide.

  • obrigada - perfection!

  • ok, maybe i have to listen to this 100 times before i understand it, or at least 10x maybe. i love pat metheny, but i dont hear the "girl from ipanema here yet"

  • wheres the tune?!

  • Fajnie, ze nie poszedł na łatwiznę. "Girl form Ipanema" każdy zna, więc nie ma sensu powtarzania dźwięków zagranych miliony razy, bo to nuda. Brawo Pat!

  • Não é mais bossa nova!

  • excelent .

  • its like halloween!!!

  • that was my experience too, i liked Fma7 way better when i was starting out lol...also i within a few days i learned E and moved it up one fret with the open strings to get Fma7b5 hahahaha...now i understand soooo much about music theory its crazy!

  • Unbelievably skillful and what a beautiful artistic interpretation. Fabulous!

  • Good on it's own, but horrible "version" of the song. It's not ipanema anymore, call it something else. He's amazing, but he bastardized the melody, harmony, and the essence of this song.

  • Qué belleza, Maestro!!!

  • asta el minuto 2.40 es un poco siniestro.....de la proxima pelicula de saw..... ya estoy vendo..saw....rio............

  • @xurdegg

    me gusta pero es siniestro

para la bada sonora de saw rio 2011.......... brutal!!

  • i can't see this kind of playing, with the thumb over the fretboard, that's just horrible! i can't look! hold the guitar properly !

  • @MrZaf12 Go away prick.

  • @zosobeatles actually i went away but your comment got the opposite and made me come back to a video i would never go back to otherwise. so think twice before posting comments. oh and go fuck yourself.

  • @MrZaf12 not trying to rebuke you or anything, but I think its more about the music than the way he plays it. I personally play with the thumb and find it work well for me. Of course if this type of music ain't your cup-o-tea then it doesn't matter but I'd still listen to his stuff if he played with his feet. Again, not trying to sound like a know-it-all, just putting out my opinion :)

  • Let me repeat this classic YouTube comment:

    Pat = God.

  • Pat's playing is beautiful. Brings tear to my eyes.

  • this is more like "the girl from area 51" or something...

  • Pat ruined this great song with his awful reharms that make people hate jazz.

  • haha well I guess he focuses on good music rather than what people think about "jazz" ..

  • That last harmonic lick.......the last lick of the tune.

Unfuckingbelievable and so full of beauty.

    Thanks Pat.

  • he really influenced my life...

  • one of my favourite brazilian song!!!!! revisited as incredible !!! must be listened several times !!! so did I !!!!

Who compares, criticizes or despises the Talent, the Creation and the HEART of Pat...JUST have the ear "CUADRAO" as we say in my country.

Thanks Pat to let me know the new Garota with more Madurez luego de 50 años....

  • Disconnected noodling.

Wow, look at me...I can play altered chords!

Of all the professional guitarists I've ever heard play acoustic guitar, he is the worst.

  • @Rexicano Oh how I hope you are being sarcastic...

  • @crishhh

I guess it's like trying to tell a Christian that the Bible is not the truth...that things like Noah's Ark are ridiculous myths...but you believers are gonna just ignore scientific fact.

You believe what you want...but grant me the same right.

I know you Christians have trouble with independent thought.

  • @Rexicano Who's you favorites in jazz better than Pat?

  • @bre4k00

    Look in my FAVS section...

Almost any African American player from the 60s.

And most Jazz guitarists bore me. Guitar has taken a huge leap forward with fingerstyle players who can play counterpoint and three voices running with Classical technique and control of timbre and dynamics. PM has a beginner technique and no idea how to play an acoustic except in a one dimensional way. He's the Kenny G of acoustic.

  • @Rexicano haha most of the vids you have are about classical guitar playing, almost no jazz, you probably don't like it, and that's ok :) Thanks for sharing. You know, this version wasn't the best, but it was nice and I appreciate Pat to keep experimenting and finding new ways, tones, scales, etc you keep practicing and doing different stuff everytime and you suddenly have more than 15 Grammys =P He's a good researcher and after that, a good musician. Shame that he bores you.

  • @bre4k00

You asked and I answered and now you think it's cool to act like a petulant child.

I could give a shit who wind Grammies...so I guess you love B. Spears, Madonna, Beiber and all the other people who win shit. Don't give me that sort of crap about commercial success.

There's plenty of Jazz players at my site but you have narrow definitions re Jazz.

    Shame on yourself, moron.

  • @Rexicano LOL!!!!!

  • @bre4k00 try being offered a teaching position at ANY university before you're 20, then maybe we'll consider the fact that you think he's horrible. Besides, being able to play many guitars at different tunings equally effortlessly, coming up with reharm like he does, you can't say that isn't amazing. As a matter of fact, these renditions weren't meant to impress technically, (neither do the rest), but these were simply extensions of his own style, perhaps for us to enjoy (:

  • @thedng Hey don't get me wrong, Pat is definitely one of my favorite Jazz Musicians! And I do love this cover :) Cheers.

  • @TheJessy54 haha my comments was meant for bre4k00 (:

  • Love all songs on this record, but this one is my favorite. Not sure why.

  • @Q2W3e4r5tss I think it has to do with pauses between notes. Often i feel guitarists dont allow the depth to reveal itself, because they are too tecnically oriented.

Grande Pat

  • totally amazing. does anyone know what tuning is that ? i'm having a hard time to figure out.

  • @iialves its a baritone guitar with the D and G strings strung an octave higher. not sure if he plays his Bari B to B or A to A....without a guitar in hand I'm guessing B to B. So it would be B E A D F# B. the A and D strings are an octave higher.

  • As always... THe MASTER!

  • PAT IO TI ADORO!!!!! MERAVIGLIA....

  • MERAVIGLIOSA!!!

  • Not only does the man have the virtuoso talent of a technical player along with the theory to put many Juilliard students to shame...

  • Beautiful re-harm. Love it.

  • did he forget the chords or something forgot to tune up,, sorry just kidding be to me thats how its sounds,, its all very deep

  • @simonmcglynn

Sorry, but you are only stupid!

    Listen to Kenny G.!

  • Brilliant!

  • Thank you Andy, (that is my middle name); it was hard to imagine PM in that situation.

Then there are the pianists who play "Girl" in all sorts of strange keys.

  • @Ccffect If you get the CD, it might tell you what mics they are using. Just a guess :)

  • the next chord is G7...commonly.

  • Pat: Not sure about this. The first chord is F major seven, no need for a bar chord, much less to put the seven in the bass; it is a neat idea, but the explanation does not seem right, unless the teacher was showing you a simplified chart. Ora, the next chord is G7 (alt option) and then yes you could be barring on F3 instead of using a non-bar voicing. Creio estar com a razão neste particular.

  • @charlesaperrone you misunderstand what hes saying.he stumbled upon f major seven when an f chord was too hard for him.he then recognized that chord to be from this tune.

    Saludos.

  • Magnifique , merci

  • Best one heard from the cd to date.

  • Thats an intriguing arrangement, will be pointing some of my students to this version.
