  • I was willing to read the book here i got to watch it ,it makes me more

    clear abt the plot thnxx

  • i am currently reading the book and was a bit confused but this made me understand it a lot better. THANK YOU!

  • WOW THATS A BIG FISH

    THIS IS A GOOD MOVIE!!!

    DIDNT WANNA READ THE BOOK

  • Can you believe it, this film is made by 29.000s frames of handmade-oil-painting!

What a bunch of hard work is that.

I can't even make a single oil painting.

Big respect for the Russian animator.

  • really nice video and the book was just as nice thanks for posting

  • bellissimo

  • Continued.....Well that was just my two cents. Maybe its just me. Maybe others have noticed this maybe not.

  • Continued. ....more. I think this is because people are so rushed these days and our attention span is short. No time to read long beautiful descriptive chapters. The words used suffer to because I notice them using shorter words and I don't see as many words that are not used frequently in everyday life. (Words that caught your interest to look up in the dictionary.

  • I read this book in highschool along with many of the master writers. Awesome book. Writers do not seem to write the same anymore. They painted quite the picture like painters with their descriptive writing and charactors that really came to life. I find alot of writers today are to quick with their writing skills, They are more interested in moving the readers interest

  • I'm 14 and i read the book. It was amazing and it made me a fan of Hemingway. I think this film only adds to my growing love for his book. I know there is currently much ignorance when it comes to literature, but it's just something people must accept. I enjoy it and it really doesn't matter to me if nobody else I know does.

  • life is crule............why should the after life be any diffrent.

  • One of my favorite books!!!!!

  • I had this book for my school to read 10 years ago... i never read it. I was like this 13 year old rat. Tonight I will download this book and finally read it.

  • Dear 13 year-olds, be a little more mature and respectful towards the book-- before you know it, you'll regret ever not appreciating good literature once you finally realize the crappy extent to which some 'books' are published nowadays to suit mass consumerism.

  • OMG THANKYOU SOOO MUCH! NOW I DONT HAVE TO READ THE STUPIED BOOK!

  • this is so amazing! this is handdrawn on glas! really impressive and really beautifull!

  • He dies

  • gouta read this for Language so far I don't like it >_<

  • Good book.

  • yay im gonna go read it!

  • The lions are a flash back from the old Mans past when he were in africa. This is a fantastic book with so many layers. The respect between the old man and the kid, also the relationship that is formed to the fish. I enjoyed Reading it and the animation is also ok. Please give it a chance. Hemmingway really made a masterpiece.

  • Most of the animals in the beginning would only be found at a zoo in CUBA

  • @jaca228

The beginning refers to the Old Man's visits to Africa when he was a young sailor. The memory of the young lions on the beach is an important symbol in the book. Hope this helps.

  • Beautiful animation, but it seems like using live actors would have been cheaper.

  • man this is thee most beutifal movie ive seen its even better than avatar thank you russians

  • @brotherdeath11 hmmm compare this to avatar (a movie which is basicly about indainas fighting the bad white guys) is more the pointles

  • Hemingway didn't stay true to his knowledge of life. If he had, the sharks would have cut the lines that secured the marlin to the old man's boat and he'd have sailed in to shore with nothing and nobody caring.

  • the teacher told us to read this story and now she told us that we should watch the animation .. well what should i say? she has a good idea! :))

  • Marvelous ... Brilliant ..

  • Just saved myself the pain of a week of reading by watching this.

  • @cteeter44 It's a marvelous book as well.

  • @cteeter44 Same.....It's one hundred pages of him trying to get a fish!

  • Sure is great. But why is the animation fuzzy?

  • iv'e been reading this book for school..makes no sense..can someone help me?

  • What the hell mother fucker

  • Impressive! Are there people that doesn´t like this?? They are insane!

  • So sad the brilliant Alexander was removed for copy write bull shit

Alexander opened up a world to be of creative freedom.

    So sad

  • @trakomako

In my mind, it is, friend. Well said.

  • Why does everyone have to bash people on the internet? There's no reason to cuss at someone that is just ignorant to something that you are not. Just give them your opinion without being mean and hateful.

  • @TheRichardson96 THE INTERNET IS A SERIES OF TUBES!!

  • @UBERxL33T Obvious troll is obvious.

BTW, if you seriously think, that it's made with some shitty software, look up Alexander Petrov on Wikipedia. Prick.

  • dba ua kml,la ka krien kefd

  • very good

  • @nnnjc1 the story is not about fishing. it's about the struggle you dumbass.

  • @nnnjc1 There was a day when the internet was not populated with common 13 year old mall rats. Those were better times.

  • this is impossible to watch in 240p. make it an hd upload.

  • there is a far better quality version on the website stagevu, go to it and search "Alexander Petrov The Old Man and the Sea". though you might have to install DivX, it's totally worth it

  • why is it in english

  • @SovietUnion100 Because fuck Russia, that's why.

  • @Ghostman7777 whats that, fuck your mom?? il be over at 9:00

  • @SovietUnion100 9:00 is no good, how about at 10:00?

  • @Ghostman7777 no, im doing another guys mom at 10, il cum at 12

  • this is on my summer reading list :(

  • omg! this is amazing!

  • plz answer quick is this based on hemingways book

  • @TheBronx98 yes

  • @ChowMein09 but it is so short

  • @TheBronx98 yes

  • f*cking amazing!

  • This is beyond amasing! The fact that he made this with drawing oil on glass, WITH HIS FINGERTIPS, is just astounding! This man is truly a master when it comes to animation!

I've will never live to see the day, when ANY cgi becomes more impressive then this! Is there a DVD version of this avaliable somewhere?

  • @OtakuPraetorius Yes, I'd imagine that you just need to search for it on Amazon

    Alexander Petrovさん、貴方は本当に素晴らしい作品を見せてくれました、心からお礼を言います、ありがとう

  • beautiful!

  • claypainting?

  • THE DREAMS OF MR MULDOON now available on AMAZON KINDLE @2.99.....publishers said this would make a great film....

  • *exsaperated tone, rolls eyes* "REALLY!!??"

  • Does anyone know if there is a DVD with this movie?

I do NOT want to see this masterpiece on ..youtube.

  • a man of vision.

  • This is fantastic!!

  • @bag04u thats because it was a stop motion painting

  • @dgroza

you should definitely re-record this in a higher quality. 240p is just far too low to show all of the details

  • @bag04u I feel the choppiness adds to it more than it takes away.

  • @bag04u the artist painted a LOT of paintings on glass and photographed them. they they put them together digitally.

  • What makes the animation so beautiful?

  • a truly amazing and original animation with music that completes it

  • @athinaNemo you read it from taschen book - animation now. alexander is a superb artist! i love him so much!!!

  • The way they animated this looks beautiful, wish i could see this in higher quality.

  • Masterpiece.

  • Made in Quebec

  • Dang! What's that music in the beginning called? I friggin' love it! The animation itself is pure greatness too.

  • Seriously... Can any literary work top The Old Man and the Sea? The book is so terse yet so dense. The existential imageries in the book are stunning! The best book I have ever read.

  • god i really really want to watch this. but the animation deserves to b seen in HD!

  • @supriya55 I didn't think it was possible but upon checking Google, apparently old tapes have more resolution than HD so, until we get a resolution that exceeds those old tapes, we will keep benefiting from remastering. Good to know. On a side note, I have been meaning to finish "The Old Man and the Sea", I might just watch the animation instead :P

  • @supriya55 agree .. :))

  • Pop Quiz, which is better? The Old Man and The Sea? Or The Sun Also Rises?

  • May I use this clip for a school Project?

  • This is a masterpiece made of a masterpiece. I say no more

  • OMG..What IS this?? NO words..

  • russian: animation gods!!!

  • @natEmation What are you talking about? It looks like some fucker put LSD in the peanut butter.

  • Ernest Hemingway its exelent writer , and book "The Old Man And The Sea" it was fantastick , but u have to interpretate , read between the lines ;]

  • awesome man.

  • holy moly

  • this is pure art!!!

is just amazing, the images the story, the music, i shouldn't deserve 1 oscar,

    it should deserve like 5!!

  • super talented.. a one of a kind..

  • Should include subtitles. :( Awesome work by the way.

  • nice muvie

  • great try

  • classic but it is great

  • awesome artwork

  • i read this book and only one word can describe it: classic

  • Often when I read and reread Old Man and the Sea, this is how I picture it. A simple beautiful story.

  • Forget the literary contexts etc, considering the achievement from a purely aesthetic standpoint, this is staggeringly awesome.

Glass animation, as Petrov does it, is animation on an extremely raw and primal level. You have no separate layers, no onion skinning, and on top of that, you have to paint fast, or the paint would otherwise be impossible to transform when it dries.

How he animated the sea is a stunning testament of his skill.

  • @Archigearour I agree I tried to doing a paint on glass animation for a project last year and it made me realize how much of Artisan Petrov is. And he painted most of it with his fingers.

  • 이런좋은작품 감사

  • a finger painting. Fucking amazing.

  • i have to read this over the summer for schoool but i think ill just whatch the movie.....if anyone reads this can u reply and tell me if the book is the same as the movie

  • @MagPieLove1 i have to read the book over the summer too. ill tell ya wen im done if its the same :)

  • This is a story about manhood in it's purest form.

  • whats a good theme to write an essay on this novella?

  • Russian animations are amazing

  • this is a great cartoon and it looks more real then GTA 4

  • now this is art, simply amazeing, i really love the old man and the sea i can't stop thinking about the old man and winning his respect, and it a short novel too, that's what immpresed me more. also the qoute " a man can be distroyed, but not defeated."

  • I truly love this book. It is just so beautifully written, the Old man's struggle for the gaining of respect which he should have always had. I also like the biblical imagery which is placed in it. Overall, the book is magnificent in that even at a young age I feel like the old man.

  • BrillIiant -- Exam 2mrw :(

  • i imagine this would be mindblowing to watch on lsd

  • i cant stop reading this book

every time i finish it i think about it again

although i imagine it completely different in my head, i cant help but enjoy this rendition.

every time I read the boy and the old man talk to each other i smile with such huge joy.

  • @cardsharkaa yes i read it also time after time it's as a bible story for me i see the generation's young and old in it amazing

  • im reading the book

  • What a breathtaking poetic homage to this novel. Amazing. You captured the very feel of a small boat on open water., the morning stillness when nature stirs thinking no humans are present, the silent life underwater, the vastness of open water, and of course, man's enduring struggles. I only wish you had depicted the tourists watching in ignorance as the giant fish washed about in the water below where they dined. I hope you will do many more like this.

  • just AMAZING!

  • I am doing a project on this novel for school. I'm thinking of making a sculpture which depicts the scene of Santiago as he attempts to catch the huge marlin. This video helps A LOT. thank you! don't ever delete it!

  • Youtube is great.

  • Superbe film d'animation. Très belle musique.

    Christian

  • Thank you for posting n sharing. enjoy....linking ~ connecting ~~~

  • @sonicpsycho

he painted every frame on glass.

Time spent doing what you love is time well spent

  • phenomenal...

  • I have a few pages till I finish the book but this animation it's exactly how I imagined the story and more..thank you Alexander :)

  • This animated entree is so delicious, I'm gonna top it with whipped cream and a cherry!

    08:55 Whooooa!!

  • es una chingoneria..... congratulations Alexander!!

  • That's the most detailed animation i'v ever seen, not the smoothest but thats because of all that detail, good story to

  • amazing

  • this would be great on acid

  • To me...my most cherished of all books next to the Holy Bible!

  • Is this roto-scoped or is this raw skill?

  • @slayeroid. people is plural. so no need to put 's' at the end of the word.

  • that is just perfect job well done and great effort

i am no expert but i see that this guy really did work his/her ass hard to get that video to the light

  • For each frame he uses his fingers to paint on a retroiluminated glass surface and then he photographs the results..this film made from 29.000 takes!!!

    AWESOME!!!!

  • @athinaNemo This is similar to the labor intensive video of Ah-Has "Take On Me" but that was Rotoscoping and they project each frame of a video through glass and the artist then traces the frame onto paper.

  • @athinaNemo he could teach patience and focus to the buddhists! lol

  • @athinaNemo you read it from taschen book - animation now. alexander is a superb artist! i love him so much!!!

  • @athinaNemo ur gay

  • @iEatPwnSuace hahahahaha

  • sccessful clip and awesome

  • I watched this in my english class

  • So am I now :P

  • wow beautiful, and I can't believe this is paint-on-glass animation. It would of taken forever!

  • @fiaammata i dont get why people think that saying 'would of' makes any sense in the goddamned world. it's 'would have', as in, 'it would have taken forever'. what you're trying to say is 'would've taken forever', which is again short for 'would have'.

  • I agree... This is beginning of the destruction of the English language.. Hemmingway is probably turning in his grave...

  • You said it.

  • @Mast3rBat3rChief dude u are stupid. this is not an e attack, i am giving you a suggestion abt yourself. this story is classic and look at the work these guys has put into this. making maybe not you but other peoples happy.
