  • Do you ever use regular drumsticks? I enjoy watching your video's and have learned a lot of drumbeats, just curious about your choice of sticks.

  • Basically, no.

It's a long story, and one I keep being asked! Can I direct you to the 'FAQ' page of my jouxplan website (link on my channel)? You'll find out why I don't use wooden sticks there :-)

Glad my vids have been enjoyable, and helpful! Cheers!

  • You dont go for the easy one do you, this is one of my favourite Rush tracks. Very good :)

  • I thank you!!

I always kind of figured this was one of the easier Rush tracks to drum too, which is why it is the only one I have done on here!! I am not capable of playing any of the others, and am barely able to play this one!!!!

    Glad you liked it!

  • @jouxplan tom sawyer is a billion times easier than this :P

  • @james6394 Hmmmm! Not for me!!!

  • I am a bass player and Geddy's playing is on another planet on this track..the drumming is also awsome and you did a good job

  • Geddy - absolutely!

    Many thanks!

  • This song is awesome and you did a great job! The bass sounds so cool! :)

  • Hey, cheers! Glad you enjoyed it!

    A great song indeed!

  • Haha, goos splashes. I see that you love to use ´em.

  • great flow,no skips even in the hard stuff, thats half the battle, the other half is known only to niel.

  • That's very kind of you!

And yes, you are quite right about Neil.

  • ya man, you did a great job...music still needs to be louder though! no hard feelings though, just crank up the juice on the tunes and it will be more rocking! keep it up, ttyl

  • I thank you!

This is the second video I ever posted and I did not have a great sound system back then. I still tend to have the music too quiet though - notice that I don't mic up the drums! I am just playing as quietly as I can (!) with my flix sticks, whilst a cd player belts out the music.

    :-)

  • btw i noticed you had a little stint with copyright infringement...have you ever considered using midi....the arrangements are usually the same and do not infringe on copyrights.

  • Sounds like I need to find out more about this midi business - I know nothing about it!

I THINK my copyright problems are resolved now (well, all existing vids are in the clear now). I will be posting my first Genesis video since January / copyright nightmare time, in a couple of days, so it will be 'interesting' to see what happens.

  • One of my favorite videos JP! Nice speed on all the fills!

  • Really?! I am a bit embarrassed about this one, 'cos there are plenty of way younger and more talented guys on YouTube doing incredible versions of this!!

    Nonetheless, I thank you!

  • holy crap

  • Ha! Ha! Ha!

  • Great job! the bass work was not exact but the fills around 2 minutes were spot on

  • Hey, thank you!

    Bass work - agreed!

    :-)

  • showed this to my girlfriend and she was speechless! and my friends were like (what the heck how does he do that?) amazing

  • I don't know what to say! Many thanks!

I promise you, I found this vid extremely hard to do - I am not a Rush expert by any means, and playing along with Mr Peart on what after all is one of his easier tracks (!), is still for me really, really hard!

Check out some of the other guys on YouTube that have covered this track - they make me look like a beginner!

    :-)

  • holy crap i listen to this every day cheers man

  • Well done, but I wish you had played with sticks.

  • 5 pc Pearl Export 1986. I added 8" and 10" toms a few years back. Swopped the snare for a Chad Smith Signature. Up-graded to DW4000 double pedals and hi-hat. A bunch of zildjians for cymbals.

  • ive never seen yyz and such a small set! that shows u have lots of talent! congratz

  • Hey, cheers!

  • =] awsome

  • One word: DAMN! Some skills there!

  • Hey, thank you very much!

  • what did you say at the end

  • "ah ha ha!......I think I got it"

I had been trying to get it right for about 8,000 takes, and this was as close as I had managed, and am capable of.

  • the best cover of these songs ive seen is pauliewanna

  • Holy F-in SHIT. Keep it up bro. Nice job on the quick double bass hits!!!

  • Ha! Ha! I thank you my friend!

  • damn that was damn good

  • that's damn kind of you!

  • Truly nice indeed!!

  • nice

  • that was brilliantly played, good work mate :) but, you dont play all the fills and comps like Neil does, i think it could sound better if you played just like him, but this is great too.

  • whoa loud bass drum but awesome job

  • use normal stiks, but that was really good :D

  • Excellent job!! Just discovered your videos of Police songs, as I'm a huge fan especially of Stewart. Great job on Neil Peart too. Wanted to know what you find more difficult, the complexity and speed of Peart, or the interesting and unconventional rhythms and timing of Stewart?

  • First off - thank you!

Difficult to answer this. I found YYZ very hard, as you will see from some of the answers I have given to others. It just is not my style.

That said, many of Copeland's pieces, whilst more suited to my style, are still horrifically difficult to get right. Walking On Moon, One World, So Lonely and Murder By Numbers stand out as masterpieces of drumming and as such make covering them with any degree of accuracy almost impossible.

Not sure if I have answered you!

  • WOW!!! great bass drum work from 0:48 to 1:43, sounds very professional and just sounds great all together

  • Hey, thank you!

  • WOW the first soilo was hella cool good job

  • Good job!!! I bet it is hard as hell to film and get a acceptable take like you mentioned especially for a RUSH song!! That last fill is BRUTAL!!!!

  • Hey, thank you!

Yes, it took me ages to get a take I was satisfied could be posted without getting too much grief from people. I am not really a Rush type drummer, more of a Genesis / The Police type. So this was a big challenge for me. There are much better covers of this by some frighteningly good guys here on YouTube!

    :-)

  • im guessing you used double pedals lol

  • Funnily enough, yes!

  • That pause at around 2:52 is a little bitch, but you got it nicely.

  • ^

    | Thouroughly enjoyed that

  • Man you're amazing. I love this song, good job covering it.

  • Hey, thank you!

  • heck i think this cover is better than teddyz he only accepts the good post if you trash talk him he wont post it. after i get a good camera ill have to post a vid of me playing.

  • Fantastic! In terms of hitting the right drums, you may have been slightly off here and there, but hey...it's rock and roll. Also, your stick control is some of the best I've ever seen. It must have taken a lot of practice to be able to do those blazing fills around the toms and have each note come out so clean. My hat goes off to you! Keep up the good work

  • Thank you very much!

I found this cover very, very difficult. It took about 30 hours to get it to this, and I was going nuts! I must have done like 30 takes before I got a version I felt I could post.

It is now a standard joke in my house for me to say 'shhhh, whats that?' to my kids, and then, when they are listening intently, I go 'ting ta ting ting ting, ta ting ting ting ting.........' They go mad!

My poor wife and kids went through hell for this video!

  • damn tight man, u should make an instructional one, that'd b tight. but i like ur set though, well balanced. but damn dude, u got skillz

  • Thank you! Not sure if I would dare to make an instructional vid, especially not of YYZ - Rush fans can be very harsh, and I reckon I might get a kicking!!

    :-)

  • wow, man i love this song. btw have u ever attempted Tom Sawyer? I wish they still made music like this in my time(im 17 btw. Soulja Boy...I dont think so lol)

  • Hello, yeah I have attmpted a few other Rush songs including Sawyer, Trees, Freewill & Jacobs Ladder. I am not good enough though!! So not posting these (well, maybe Freewill).

I AM however going to post a vid of the first two thirds of La Villa Strangiata, 'cos I can actually do that (up to the part when Neil just goes off on one.......!!!!)

  • i dont know if i ever commented this before. i dont think so I'm going to leave one.

    you did an amazing job.

it took me forever to learn this. its so hard to remember what to hit when.

    this is great

  • Thank you! And I absolutely agree with you about remembering what to hit when and in what order etc. It's a bleeding nightmare!

  • this was pretty good, you had the beat right, but sometimes you played the wrong drums, thats ok though, was still good!

  • Ha ha! Agreed! I had a nightmare trying to play this, and I reckon I hit different drums everytime I practised it! YYZ is way harder to copy then I intially realised. It took me about 30 hours to learn it, my poor wife was going nuts!

  • Are thoughs hotrods that your using?

  • Hi. They are Flix sticks.

  • Neil Peart vs. Collins??? That's like comparing a 100 Meter Sprinter to a Thoroughbred Race Horse. Any beginner could follow along w/ Phil Collins, and I bet he'd say the same. One of the greatest Rock drummers of all time, that didn't get the recognition, is Steve Smith of Journey. Find some footage of his Videos of Jazz Drumming and your mouth will need surgery to close back up!!

  • Oooooffff! Disagree! Do you really believe any beginner can play along to early Genesis stuff? You seriously underestimate Mr Collins. Of course Neil is incredible (see my earlier coment); but so is Chester, Bill, Copeland, Steve Smith, Gadd, Rune Arneson, Marque Gilmour.....there are endless incredible drummers, not all household names. Trying to argue one is better than the other is like comparing vanilla ice cream with strawberry. Both great ice creams, but they taste different.

    :-)

  • What about John Paul Jones? I tend to like those that play a lotta 'off' beats. You know who most people don't see as that good of a drummer b/c their songs 'sound' simple is Charlie Watts, but have you ever tried to play along to "Start Me Up" or "Honky Tonk Women" note for note? Tougher than it sounds! By the way, maybe I was a little harsh on ole Phil (I've Always been a fan) Besides, ANYone that can hold a beat thru an ENTIRE song is good enuff!

  • That's pretty good..but you really have to check this guy out on here..he goes by the screen name PG49...awsome player..tell him I sent ya..LOL

  • Already seen him - I left a comment on his cover 4 months ago!

He plays both left and right handed, I think. Amazing stuff!

  • I have to say amazing job rlly enjoyed it and I have a question why do u always play with brushes?

  • Hello and thanks!

I stopped playing with sticks in about 1990, when I moved house, was annoying neighbours, and anyway I was not in a band. Moved to brushes. In about 1999 someone introduced me to flix sticks. Loved 'em. Played with sticks for first time about 4 weeks ago. It was weird as hell, loud, and they bounced out my hands!!!

  • dont get me wrong though, excellent job.keep up the good work! :)

  • not that i am any pro, but stop using the splashes as a regular cymbal..it doesnt sound as good

  • Hello. Fair point! It's a bad habit, admittedly. I have always liked splashes, and 'cos I don't have lots of big expensive 18" crashes, I have to hit what I do have, which I am afraid means some splashes.

Also, the splashes are easier to get a 'big' sound out of with flix sticks. But I know what you mean.

  • phil

  • joux whats harder to drum to phil or neil?

  • For me it is Neil. I am not saying Neil is better than Phil (or vice versa) but I have been copying Phil for years, so find his style easier to cope with. I found YYZ really tough. He has a precision that I find very hard to copy. I cannot do a lot of his stuff, though I plan to post the first half of La Villa Strangiata live, 'cos I can actually do that.

What I have noticed is that Rush fans are much tougher on drummers than Genesis fans!!

  • Not to bad for a beginner..Keep up the practice you will get it someday! Just don't give up Man it will come to you!... Remember this "If you play it he will come"

  • You will be pleased to know I ain't no beginner. It took me about 12 hours to learn this track, after 34 years of playing drums.

So my attempt is even worse than you think.

  • I wasn't implying that you were not a good drummer & I liked that you put your own style to the song. Neil Peart very hard drummer to follow. you did an excellent job.

  • That's that sorted then! Thanks.

I totally agree that Neil P is very hard to follow.

I think PhaseIIskater and Martin P do the best covers of YYZ by far on YouTube. Though TeddyZ's cover is pretty damn scary too......

  • don't patronize him. He's doing quite well.

  • nice job on the song man

i like using your video to play along with when our drummers not around. planning on playing this on a gig too so i might as well improve from your video lol.

  • Thank you!

Er, but if you are not the drummer, and you can play YYZ, you must be one hell of a musician! And how good is your actual drummer!!!!? For those of us who think we are drummers, your comment is pretty damn scary!!!

  • Love your stuff.. You are awesome...

But look at the grass out side.. You'v been playing the drums too long lol..

    Go Cut The Lawn.

  • Ha! ha! ha! Thanks for that!

Must admit that it is my wife who cuts the lawn, er, usually whilst I am drumming.....!

  • well no offence capsnb42, but y dont you post a video of you drumming to shows us all how its done

  • dude you suck. learn the fills

  • Okay, thanks

  • Nice, what kind of sticks is that :D??

  • Hello and thanks!

They are Flixsticks - a cross between wooden drumsticks and brushes. You can get different weights (jazz, rock etc). Mine are intermediates. Great for playing a bit quieter, and makes posting on here a bit easier if you haven't got drum mics and a mixing desk! These ones are fluorescent pink, but you can get other colours.

  • Nice job man.

  • Super playing and great set also too. Amazing job keep up the drumming.

  • Beautiful.

Drums are so technical in this song. =D

  • Are you using the dualist pedal?

  • Hello. I am using a DW4000 double.

  • quite good but that snare sounds bad, try to tune it(tuning snares is quite a bitch)

  • Thank you! Agreed - tuning is not something I have ever been very good at!

  • Nice Job. Keep posting!

  • Hurrah! My first commentor, and it's none other than Teddyz himself! Am chuffed.
