Both are great and hugely influenced by the master Buddy, but if we look back to the 70´s we realize soon that Neil grasp something from the Carl´s style. Be sure...he combined Buddy, Carl, and Ketih Moon succesfully.
First of all, this is comparing a 20 something Palmer to a Peart who qualifies for AARP. Of course Palmer seems more energetic? DUH? Go look at Peart's work 30 years ago!
Both are great drummers no doubt, but I have to say I like Palmers eclectic, anything goes style, whick makes a great drum solo, and the type of music ELP plays even better. It's not good to compare an apple to an orange if you already know the difference.
Both are great drummers and both have their strong points. I don't really see the point of comparison, they're both so talented, it comes down to personal preference. I think it says a lot for Peart that he plays with Buddy Riche's band and I think it says a lot that Palmer plays like Buddy. As a drummer, I'm glad to have all three as influences!
The same of this is the sound quality of Carl's recording doesn't give the full story. I've seen him and Neil both in concert when they were at their peak, and it would be hard to say who is "better", it's like comparing a million dollars cash or gold, it's a million dollars!, WHO CARES!
@MrSluggo666 lol actually, i have been playing drums for a very long time. you just have the reading comprehension/explanation skills of a chimp, or english isn't your first language (especially since you lack the comprehension skills to understand the difference between slagging and defending gene simmons, since you wanna dig through comments for ammunition lol). nothing i've said was even remotely inflammatory, either lol. calm down.

@uwique yea but thats as far as it goes just good but the speed &the finess that carl has is beyond reach pratically . if you see him live like i have in numorous occasions you can't believe your ears &eyes he's a amazing drummer not just good good is just average this dude is way beyond average my friend!! this is where you seperate the boys from the real men
@RADicalDownloads1 palmer studied percussion..took drum lessons too,,thats why his hands are so quick,,he holds his hands correctly..proper hand technique.
They are fantastic players, I love Rush music and ELP music, So when I hear some CD´s from these two bands I appreciate the musicaliy of both players, obviously Rush is Hard rock progressive music, and ELP pure progressive music, so its different language but for me Bill Bruford is still the KING
i have seen over 250 rock bands, Palmer is for sure the best i have ever seen
i seen him in colo. with journey. And palmers hands was moving so fast.that they looked like they was floating. unbelivable drum solo that night.number #1 drummer
carl palmer. then moon.neil good also but no carl palmer.
The audio is very poor unfortunately. Do a Youtube string search search for UeQsZOQqO6I Much clearer audio shows how good Carl is. I've seen them both live in 2011 and Carl can't be beat. Don't use your classic rock radio to judge their musicianship because all of Rush's music is technical and a lot of ELP radio tunes are ballad-like. Buy some ELP CD's and listen to Carl's genius. Carl is an excellent cheerleader and emcee during shows too. I've met him three times. Pure gentleman and scholar.
Neil is hands down the better drummer. i think some of you are getting the fact that Palmer wastes alot of energy jittering around with good drumming. Neil is very efficient with his movements. thats the hallmark of good playing for any instrument. Palmer has some good points, but overall, just lots of noise and energy. Kinda like an old coal furnace.
@piggypiefly noise my ass too bad buddy rich is dead cause you should see what he said about carl palmer listen to TANK at the age of 20 -21 his drum solo is way out of reach for peart i would like to see if neal would play with buddy but i know palmer would you don't know yer ass from your rudaments DICK HEAD!
Totally agree - Both are supremos but in their heyday Palmer by a country mile.... Who gives a monkeys really wo's best when they're the very best in town....?
@reegaderegan finally there is someone that understands drumming . what these peart lovers don't understand is that he just uses alot of basic stuff like 16ths 8 notes & tripliets . as palmer will also use the same "but" if you listen to his drumming he also uses alot of rudaments to me thats a fucken good drummer applying rudaments to your playing.... correct me if im wrong ..
First-as stated below:This is old Peart vs A Young Palmer.Compare both now&as much as it pains me to say/Honestly=Peart's the Best.Palmer has slipped to #2.And this is the Original ASIA Fan-RenegadeRegan™saying this.Palmer is/always will be#1 in my heart tho...
Neil Peart is a much more interesting and musical drummer. Palmer has the superior chops but his solos sound like a lot of manic flailing to me. Yeah he's fast, but so what?
@thicknhard buddy is ten time the drummer these two could ever be, he was good at anything . i love neil and carl but buddy will remain just for his excellent timing and fenominal skill
you can't compare, these two drummers are really great on their styles..i like both Rush and ELP but ELP plays much more progressive music that requires a lot more skill, niel peart chooses to keep in reserve some of his full potential as well.
@EveryOne Look I have seen them both in concert Dont get me wrong Neil Peart Is A good Drummer But Carl Palmer Is better im sorry Yes He gets off time with his bass But He is The Better Drummer I saw Rush Neils Solo Was Boaring. He has No Show! And Has No Creativity. Carl create New Solos all the time. When I saw Palmer I could clearly tell he was better. The Audiance Went wild At the rush Concert they didnt. Carl Is more of a showman He has more creativity And is The Better Drummer.

I have seen ELP, Asia and RUSH live in concert several times over the years and I would put YYZ or even Tom Sawyer up against ANYTHING ELP or Asia ever put out. Lets face it. Neil Peart is the DRUM GOD to the best drummers who ever lived. Carl has an even hand in the video but it is purely a product of selective editing. Watch both drummers live and it is clear Neil blows Carl Palmer away.

totally different styles, palmer has far better great chops but is arguably less musical....either way, neither of them are anywhere near the greats, Rich, Colaiuta, Weckl, Royster, Benny Greb, Chris Coleman, etc....................................
In anyway shape or form Emerson Lake & Palmer is the greatest most talented progressive rock band in the history of music. Carl Palmer is over 60 and is still the best drummer alive today. Keith Emerson is the Jimmi Hendrix of the Moog Syntersizer and a classically trained pianist. Greg Lake is a prolific song writer and was a great singer of his time. You cannot on any level compare Rush to ELP or Carl to Neil.
its really hard to tell at this level of drumming to say probably 1st and 2nd in prog. rock. All I can say its a matter of taste. For me is Carl because I also like jazz and classical music, probably for some more into rock would say peart and its ok too
Two different style drummer's Peart by far is a more superior drummer and showman, All of the mouthy ones here try and play a Rush hour and do a solo as Peart does and then another or better Rush hour, Palmer is a great drummer also yet Emerson,Lake, and Palmer and not Rush either
Then you clearly know nothing about drumming technique then :/
Peart was using almost nothing but single strokes, and flailing his arms like mad showman, messing around with harmonics to seem cool, which is creative, but not skillful, and has displayed similar traits in all his performances.
Palmer, as seen in this video, is not only more than twice as fast as peart, but much more precise. He also doesn't have a SINGLE wasted movement.
Also, Palmer was switching between paradiddles, double strokes, and triple strokes, maybe I even saw a ratamacue in there, and he still keeps the tempo, without wasting movements, vastly superior drummer in skill. If you don't see it, you're just wrong.
@LaIron433 I've seen both drummers live and I have to go with Palmer by at least a nose. A fan of both of them and the bands they were in. Both definitely outclass the majority of rock drummer out there.
They didn't show Peart during the fastest part of his solo, but Neil always reminded me of a more refined Palmer. Now, go watch Weckl, Mayer or Jimbo smoke both these guys!
I am 44 years old. I was too young to ever see ELP in concert although I am a huge ELP fan. I can remember this stupid argument back in high school. Who is better C.P. or N. P.
Piss off the comparisons and listen to the music. Like whoever and love whoever. Whatever and whoever moves you...That's all that matters.
Come up to modern times. Both of these great dinosaurs are blown away by the likes of Donati, Mayer, Lang, Mangini, ect. That's an unbiased opinion from an old-school guy like myself, who favors Ian Paice.
@charlessavarese first of all, Ian Paice is a drum god, really. But you can't show up saying Palmer and Peart are 'blown away' by some guys who, somehow, they've influenced...
I agree with wonkavella, they're totally different. Peart is basically a straight rock drummer who loves jazz but isn't very good at it. Palmer has much more of a jazz feel, but weaves all over creation trying to play straight rock. Emerson liked the ELP arrangements to move around and breathe, so Carl was really the perfect drummer for that band. However, he wasn't very well suited for Asia. Peart's drum parts on Rush material are immaculate and well-composed.
@idrummerboy13 what is so hard about 7/8 and as far as elp goes they played odd meter all the time and comfortably.it is apple and oranges they are both great but totally different
How many drummers does it take to change a lightbulb? 2. One to change the bulb, and one to say Niel Peart or Carl Palmer could have done it better.
Wow. But seriously, that was great. I'm going to have to stand behind Carl on this one though. Palmer was the earlier artist and I think Peart may have nicked a little off of him.
It's not a competition, but I love them both equally in different ways. True, in the early 70's, Palmer was already established as the Buddy Rich of rock, while Peart was still unknown and had gone off to England to try to make something of himself . Palmer's a jazz drummer who plays rock/orchestral music. Peart, as much as I love him, should probably stick to rock and structural solos. Strip them down to pure technique-- each with a snare, bass, hh, Palmer would smoke him in any decade.
I have been a Rush fanatic since the ripe age of 9, and never thought I would see the day I'd be having this debate in a million years, but after seeing Carl Palmer last night, the dudes got serious chops, even at his present age. I would never say ones better than the other, merely because they are different individuals and should both be worshiped for what they put forth unto the world. If you can't master their expertise, you haven't the ability, nor the qualifications to make a valid point!
After listening to millions of hours of drummers, watching tens of thousands hours of music, and watching hundreds of hours of drum instructional DVD's, I'll have to say that both drummers are in different classes. Palmer works on speed and very fast speed. He is incredibly fast. Peart works on timing, diferrent timings together, his drumming is a work of poetry. Neil doesn't care about the speed as much as he does to how it fits together. that's why they call him "The Professor" on the drums.
i can't pick a winner of this but i have to say it is unfair to compare a neil peart drum solo from 5 or so years ago with a carl palmer solo from over 30 years ago if you compared neil in 77 with carl in 77 it would have shown a lot clearer but either way an interesting battle from my 2 favourite percussionists
Although I am a fan of both drummers, I saw Neil 2 weeks ago from 100 feet away and Carl last week from 15 feet away and Carl won hands down. Neil does not have Carl's energy even today. Carl is a more colorful drummer even in his simpler drumming in Asia. Just an incredibly technical drummer and showman yesterday and today.
Do a youtube search for ueGcV255NfM and listen to Tank to the headphones.
Do a youtube search for sbF8gyYpEfA for Carl today.
This is stupid. Comparing Neil in his 50's to Carl in his 20's. I still think Neil whoops his ass, but go back to Neil in the 80's and watch him spank Carl's ass even more than he did in this video.
@nevinkel I don't t think so! Dude obviously don't know what you are even talking about. Neil back in the early days was doing all single stroke rock drumming. Do you homework.
I play in a band that does about 7 Rush tunes and I grew up learning and playing along to E.L.P. recordings and what I've found is this: They both are very fast but Palmer is faster. Pearts rhythms are usually more challenging to figure out but once you learn them they are easier to pull off. A good example of this is the song Tarkus. The main beat is very easy to figure out but almost impossible for me to keep going. He is playing his bass and ride on every beat and the snare on accents. Try it
@rednecknber As a drummer of many years, I can truly say that you are clueless! Even Buddy Rich (greatest of all time) called Carl the best up and coming drummer in the world (back in the 70's)...Peart can't touch Palmer's skills...Go learn something child
Peart's a great drummer...Palmer's greatest!! Buddy's old school's kicks some hard ass!Neil Peart is the heart of Rush!! But Carl Palmer is way to refined and way wayyyyyyy ahead !! ( My opinion!!)Check out Tony Meheean..Shadows..1950's...WOW!!Same style..

They are fantastic players, I love Rush music and ELP music, So when I hear some CD´s from these two bands I appreciate the musicaliy of both players, obviously Rush is Hard rock progressive music, and ELP pure progressive music, so its different language but for me Bill Bruford is still the KING

Fairlynormalme 11 months ago
You cannot even compare Peart to Carlo. Carl is in a much higher class then him. The only soloist drummer drum in Carls class is Buddy Rich
Fairlynormalme 11 months ago
@Fairlynormalme Amen to that.

its really hard to tell at this level of drumming to say probably 1st and 2nd in prog. rock. All I can say its a matter of taste. For me is Carl because I also like jazz and classical music, probably for some more into rock would say peart and its ok too
thats only my particular taste and view, peace.

Two different style drummer's Peart by far is a more superior drummer and showman, All of the mouthy ones here try and play a Rush hour and do a solo as Peart does and then another or better Rush hour, Palmer is a great drummer also yet Emerson,Lake, and Palmer and not Rush either

damanwithdaskillz 1 year ago
@LaIron433
He also doesn't have a SINGLE wasted movement.
damanwithdaskillz 1 year ago
Also, Palmer was switching between paradiddles, double strokes, and triple strokes, maybe I even saw a ratamacue in there, and he still keeps the tempo, without wasting movements, vastly superior drummer in skill. If you don't see it, you're just wrong.
damanwithdaskillz 1 year ago
@LaIron433 I've seen both drummers live and I have to go with Palmer by at least a nose. A fan of both of them and the bands they were in. Both definitely outclass the majority of rock drummer out there.

@charlessavarese I was speaking in terms of sheer technical ability. Sorry, really shouldn't make those comparisons. Or should I? Hmmm...........

Synthetrix 1 year ago

Neil doesn't care about the speed as much as he does to how it fits together. that's why they call him "The Professor" on the drums.
tritoddd 1 year ago
i can't pick a winner of this but i have to say it is unfair to compare a neil peart drum solo from 5 or so years ago with a carl palmer solo from over 30 years ago if you compared neil in 77 with carl in 77 it would have shown a lot clearer but either way an interesting battle from my 2 favourite percussionists
pinkfloydrule27 1 year ago
There is probably no drummer alive that can match a Carl Palmer drum solo. Peart is great but Carl is just on a higher level. As a soloist

Try it
