John Amos didn't renew his contract because he didn't like the writers portrayal of a strong father figure who was in the home and a good father but could never get ahead financially. They would always get your hopes up by "dangling" some position or job in front of him/the audiance, then repeatedly take it away. He got tired of that shit and so after talks with producers and writers he decided to leave the show so they killed him off.
