common! live music is not the same with the big music these days. Bands have have synthesized back up or half a dozon stand-ins to help recreate their recorded music. When the drums kick in and when they balance in the John Paul's guitar(not until the g-solo) it sounds amazing either way. Some people are about live music and other simply want to have the studio song totally recreated. Live is and should be different. Those who disliked this need live-music time & learn to appreciate it
@xrobwx I'll say! I thought he was doing something with his feet, but couldn't see. The camera operator should have at least gotten a shot or two of that work. Thanks.
One incredibly moving song for me, reminds me of all the girls I fell in love with, the ones I had crushes on. The ones who shot me down, and the break ups I have had over the years. Love is a wonderful thing, but can be a painful as hell. This song illustrates it in a way that i do not think any other song does. It is difficult for me not to become emotional when I hear this song. The highs and lows of love...oh well ....Ten Years Gone.
It gives me chills watching videos of Led Zeppelin perfoming live. Unfortunately, I never got to see a Led Zeppelin concert. I'd do anything for them to come play at "The Hill" in Moncton, New Brunswick, with Jason Bonham on drums, my dream come true.
"Then as it was, then again it will be. And though the course may change sometimes, rivers always reach the sea."
From what I understand the woman this song is about, as well as other Led Zep songs, is named Shirley and she is the sister of Maureen (Robert's ex-wife). He dated Shirley first and she told him "its either music or me" he chose music and ended up with Maureen but always pined after Shirley. They even reunited again in the ealry 80's after he and Maureen divorced and supposedly have a son together. Gee I wonder what the holidays are like in that family...talk about drama.
non of zeps songs sound the same. non of their performances of the same song sound the same. they were so good at what they did and no other band (imo) even came close to their level
I saw Zep twice in the 70s at the Inglewood Forum in LA. They were two of the most amazing musical experiences in my long, storied life. I can tell you, first hand, watching the vids of live Zep, this is what it was like, somewhat. You cannot reproduce the vibe, the thrill, the excitement and volume of the live concert - being there, taking it all in, Page's guitar and Bonzo's drums swirling about, Jone's bass lined reverberating through your body, and Plant's voice and persona. It was great!
My dad made me listen to rock music. i started with Beatles. in my life i listened to lynyrd skynyrd, rolling stones, black sabbath, GnR, The doors,.... My hard disc was full of music. then i realize. listening to led zeppelin i like listening to Beatles, lynyrd skynyrd, rolling stones, black sabbath, GnR, The doors all together. This diversity which Led Zepp had you shouldn't find anywhere you try. Thank you God for that.
This is what it's all about, Led Zeppelin at their best. Most notably Jimmy and Robert at their ultimate best. This song will forever remain number 1. And will someone please tell me just what in the world JPJ is playing?
This is what it's all about, Led Zeppelin at their best. Most notably Jimmy and Robert at their ultimate best. This song will forever remain number 1.
in my opinion Page being high on stage all the time and his sloppiness made his music nearly impossible to imitate, making him even more of a god in music. Zepps genres of music go from Country to Soft Metal, Bron Yr Aur Stomp to Achilles Last Stand, making all four of them be GENIUSES AND GODS they should all be Knighted. Sir James Patrick Page, Sir Robert Anthony Plant, Sir John Henry Bonham(even if he is dead knight him), and Sir John Baldwin
@bluelibra65 Someone said they sucked live? Obviously, they have no idea of what Zeppelin really was. Live WAS Led Zeppelin. Where the music evolved, stretched, took on new shades and occasionally, yes, crashed and burned. They were a band that on stage, anything musically could happen. You are obviously dealing with neophytes who don't know better. Don't harsh on 'em. They are probably listening to Lady Gaga. Politely point them to a multitude of videos here. Perhaps they'll get it.

@bluelibra65 IKR! I hate it when peeps tell me Jimmy was sloppy live. I say eff you! It's called rawness. Led Zep was one of teh tightest live bands ever. Their communication onstage was uncanny.
@xrobwx Plus when you go to a concert, who wants to hear a note-for-note replication of a recording? I know I don't, I don't pay that kind of money to go to a show to hear the purely the record. I go for the experience, to bond with other fans, to FEEL the music, be one with the band. To get in tune with the RAW talent of those who are so passionate about what they do as I am about listening to it and creating it myself. Ah, Zeppelin, you are pure ecstasy.
@xrobwx yeah i 100% agree with you. also, i can also see what people do say about him being sloppy but i wouldnt call it sloppy. id call it making the guitar literally a part of your soul...i think zeppelin are amazing on stage. you can tell how much better bands put on a show back then.
Somehow over the many years as a avid Zeppelin fan/follower/worshipper I have missed this song?! Rarely played on the radio, but OMG it is so freakin Awesome...Give me the Goosebumps, chills down my spine and a damp eye when I can close my eyes and focus on its Magnificence! It has it all,the lyrics and the sounds that come from these Gods of Music. So Unbelievable! God, if you're there, please let us see a band of the caliber again. It won't make up for all the wars and malice down here, but it'll certainly take the edge off.
According to Plant, this song was written about a girl he was dating just in the begining as Zeppelin started gaining notoriety. He was touring, and was starting to tour relentlessly, taking away time from her. Basically, she said "look it is either me or your little band" more or less. Plant's feeling was, I must continue, I am on to something wonderful....and he was right. Sadly she is ten years gone plus now, but what a wonderful song! And a simply beautiful band! Zep 4 ever!
@Boski391 Yes, the song is about Plant's first love and the fact she made him choose music or her. Maureen (Plant's ex-wife) was already well in the picture when he joined Zep. The woman whom these lyrics are written for came at an earlier time in Plant's life before Zeppelin. As the story goes, it was when he decided he wanted to give music a real go and try to make a living at it. Plant might be getting senile in his explanation.
@TheZOSO1 She's married to Charlie Jones. Jones had been a regular part of Plant's bands in the 1990's. Most famously, playing bass with Page/Plant during their "reunion." Carmen doesn't maintain a high public profile. There are modern pictures of her online. Just google 'em.
@zoso8t0 From what I understand the woman this song is about, as well as other Led Zep songs, is named Shirley and she is the sister of Maureen (his ex-wife).
@Boski391 Nope, you are right, I was wrong about the timing, referring back to my Zep literature. This was before Zep, when he was just starting out. I feel bad her, but happy for the world to have Robert!
Note to all - cleaned up some of the more recent less than quality exchanges. Comments are great, swearing and insulting each other. C'mon. Save that for the KISS videos. ;)

@zoso8t0 can you tell me what happened to Plants daughter??
TheZOSO1 8 months ago
@TheZOSO1 She's married to Charlie Jones. Jones had been a regular part of Plant's bands in the 1990's. Most famously, playing bass with Page/Plant during their "reunion." Carmen doesn't maintain a high public profile. There are modern pictures of her online. Just google 'em.

@zoso8t0 can you tell me what ever happened to Plants daughter??
TheZOSO1 8 months ago
@zoso8t0 From what I understand the woman this song is about, as well as other Led Zep songs, is named Shirley and she is the sister of Maureen (his ex-wife).

@Boski391 Nope, you are right, I was wrong about the timing, referring back to my Zep literature. This was before Zep, when he was just starting out. I feel bad her, but happy for the world to have Robert!
