  • Powerful song. glad to see fellow corroes fans. :)

  • love this but favourite version was by the J.S.D. BAND

  • im so glad theres still so many corries fans!

  • when was this recorded? i was part of audience for BBC in '87

  • 3 thumps down are probabkly 3 of those 6 english forresters XD

  • great song!

  • I have never seen those before but those are some incredible instruments, I want one!

  • @alcoyot they are called combolins, invented by roy williamson (the dark haired one) and as far as i know you cant buy one, though i am sure you could have one made for you, though they are just a combination of several instruments that are easily found in music shops

  • It is also spelt O'braidislee. Now sure what one is right, but if you look for it under that spelling you can get lyrics.

kinglaoghaire.comWill get you the lyrics for the song. It is also spelt O'braidislee. Now sure what one is right

  • @231cats It's also Johnnie o' Cocklesmuir, which is probably the original. It started as a Border ballad but got rewritten for a north-eastern setting, hence the references to Monymusk etc. The older, Border-set versions only survive in fragments, so it's usually the later version that gets sung.

  • Very nice...wonderful

  • should'nt have been bloody poaching should he then!!

  • great song. anyone have the chords/guitar tab?

  • My great-great grandfather Geordie Graham was the greatest poacher in Ontario in the 1880's. Great man. We of course obey the law now

  • The Corries are amazing. I love to see the live use of the Combolins. One of the groups that I wish could have lived forever!!

  • I was proud to attend many of their concerts in Glasgow and in Dundee.Scotland`s finest. Thanks for the memories.

  • I was hoping someone can help me. I've got most of the song figured out except a few words,

The buttons that were upon his sleeve

Were o' the gowd sae guid

What do the words in that second line mean? Gowd Sae guid? Thanks in advance, this is a great band!

  • @Paganwarrior2000 I think that it is the "gold so good"

  • @christian17nielsen Oh, OK. Thanks. Not that great with the Scottish dialect. Still love this band. Vocals, instruments, everything. I'm obviously American, but most of my ancestors are Anglo or Gaelic so I'm trying to learn more about my roots. That and I like good folk music.

  • @Paganwarrior2000 Good for you! No matter who your ancestors were, they deserve to be honoured.

  • @carollizc Thanks!

  • does someone have the lyrics to this song?

  • He was sorely missed in Forres where his guitar is on display. I am proud to have known him.

  • @Ally375C I envy you that. I know a lot of their songs by heart and am actually a good singer and love to sing their music, nothing like it.

  • What an amazing song! you can really hear it's not from this time! I love it

  • excellent story ,i love this song.

  • What a cool song!

  • What a great song. Absolutely love the Corries! No one does this music quite like they do. For a different rendition, try the version by the Old Blind Dogs. Now only if I could find a pretty lass tae enjoy this with me... :)

  • I had to translate forr onee of my Best mates coz i live in Liverpool burr im a Bornn Scott :)) x

  • pure magical

  • I love this song. I can't understand the words, but I can't stop listening.

  • and apologies to my partner ;-P For me it's the combolins , the tune and the struggle not the nationality :)

  • I can't believe I've found a vid of my fav Corries song! Happy and I'm grinning :)

  • actually love this. For a techno/rock chick i think that says alot x x

  • for a techno/roch chick is one thing im a blumming hip hop addict

  • Beautiful. Mesmerizing. I love the combolins. Can't get enough of them.

  • Their combolins are amazing! Roy Williamson was a musical genius for creating them. He was taken away from us too young. They were two of the most talented performers in the history of music.

  • Hehehehe. This makes nightmare on elm street sound like andy pandy! Blood and guts tastic!

  • Too right, great song though , eh ?

  • Listen a few times carefully and you will understand the lyrics.

  • Funny, I can't understand each word either and can't find the lyrics on the internet, but it seems to me as if he sings "Herzblatt" a few times. That's a German word for "darling" ;-)

  • its hearts blood or herts blude as it kinda phonetically sounds in scots-the arrow has pierced the heart

  • Comment removed

  • the lyric is herts blood-his hearts blood (after the foresters shoot him in the heart)-its lallans (lowland scots)-hope this helps you-def not german !

  • The lyrics mention Monymusk. Which is up in Aberdeenshire. So i'm thinking it's technically Doric not Lallans. Funny enough, Scots lanugauge is a germanic lanugauge technically (as is english). :)

  • One of the "most bestest" things I've ever heard. Absolutely fantastic and amazing. I am a huge fan of Scottish and Irish music and The Corries anyway. But the performance of this song just makes me speechless! I just lack the words!

Are the lyrics available anywhere? Since I am not a native speaker of English I don't understand everything.

  • K, missed Ayeshteni's lyrics at the first glance.

  • any book with scots border songs will have it-part of the oral traditon and they change with each teller

  • Again, the mention of Monymusk makes me think this isn't a borders tune. But maybe someone will correct me?

  • Its a border reiver ballad but the place of monymusk would be changed for each local audience-it just so happens the corries sing monymusk as they may have heard it this way. its not set in stone as these tunes were carried by traveling musicians eager to please local audiences

  • And to think that Roy designed and made those Combolins. Fantastic musician. Tremendous feeling in this song.

  • I love this song.

  • This song gives me chills. Quite nice.

  • Part 7 - final. He's broken four o' that one's ribs His airm and his collar bane And he has set him upon his horse Wi' the tidings sent him hame - hame Wi' the tidings sent him hame But Johnny's guid bend bow is broke His twa grey dugs are slain And his body lies in Monymusk His huntin' days are dane - are dane His huntin' days are dane
  • Part 6 Then up jumps Johnny fae oot o' his sleep And an angry man was he Sayin "Ye micht have woken me fae my sleep Ere my heart's blood blint my e'e - my e'e Ere my heart's blood blint my e'e" But he's rested his back against an oak His fit upon a stane And he has fired at the seven o' them He's killed them a' but ane - but ane He's killed them a' but ane
  • Part 5 Then up and jumps the first forester He was captain o' them a' Sayin "If that be Jock o' Braidislee Unto him we'll draw - we'll draw Unto him we'll draw" The first shot that the foresters fired It hit Johnny on the knee And the second shot that the foresters fired His heart's blood blint his e'e - his e'e His heart's blood blint his e'e
  • Part 4 As I cam' in by Monymusk Doon among yon scruggs Well there I spied the bonniest youth Lyin' sleepin' atween twa dugs - twa dugs Lyin' sleepin' atween twa dugs The buttons that were upon his sleeve Were o' the gowd sae guid And the twa grey hounds that he lay between Their mouths were dyed wi' blood - wi' blood Their mouths were dyed wi' blood
  • Part 3 They ate so much o' the venison They drank so much o' the blood That Johnny and his twa grey dugs Fell asleep as though were deid - were deid Fell asleep as though were deid Then by there cam' a silly auld man An ill death may he dee For he's awa' tae Esslemont The seven foresters for tae see - tae see The foresters for tae see
  • Part 2 But Johnny has ta'en his guid bend bow His arrows one by one And he's awa' tae the greenwood gane Tae ding the dun deer doon - doon Tae ding the dun deer doon Noo Johnny shot and the dun deer leapt And he wounded her in the side And there between the water and the woods The grey hounds laid her pride - her pride The grey hounds laid her pride
  • Jock O' Braidislee [print] (Trad) part 1 Johnny got up on a May mornin' Called for water to wash his hands Says "Gie loose tae me my twa grey dugs That lie in iron bands - bands That lie in iron bands" Johnny's mother she heard o' this Her hands for dool she wrang Sayin' "Johnny for your venison Tae the greenwood dinnae gang - gang Tae the greenwood dinnae gang"

  • Brillaint song and excellent music

  • because of hundreds of years of english propaganda makes most scots believe that were fuked without the union and we need westminster.!!

  • hehe i still like to poach on the queenz land hehe

  • Why does a Scottish Parliament still let our land, deer and salmon be taken by the English landlords and wealthy syndicates? Our Country, Our Land, Our Salmon and Our Deer!

  • the royal family can go get fucked buncha useless twats

  • Hah sorry i mean Gorgia

  • Did anyone see Ronnie sing the flower of Scotland at the France Game ....... MAGNIFICENT he still looks the same hehe

  • I think this is taken from a BBC video. Fantastic sounds from those amazing instruments and of course Roy and Ronnie. I love that bit, "and an angry man was he"! Paints the picture perfectly. RIP Roy, you are missed!

  • We Scots rock! Hail, Hail Caledonia!!!!!!!!!!

  • canny beat the best

  • Which DVD includes these kind of songs?

    Greetings from Germany!

  • ive had a lot of corries records but none with this on it . but ill try to find out for you slainte !

  • This song is amazing, the lyrics are a hard and expressive lesson of history...but the most overwhelming stuff is the way Rob sings it, full of passion and feeling it...just amazing.

  • June Tabor's version [Johnny of Bredislee] is great, too...however, not as passionate as her "Lord Maxwell's Last Goodnight."

  • just listen and learn, if you r cool!

  • Thanks for posting this. Always great to see The Corries and even better (and rare) to see them playing The Combolins.

  • Amazing tune. Despite not comming from a musical or lol a particularly nationalist background i was brought up on The Corries. Only recently have i been reaquanted with these tunes. The best thing about The Corries and these tunes is that the respresent far more than patriotic folk music. They are representative of a fiercly proud psyche that exists in the Scots where ever they are in the world.

  • It's a good example of the controlled aggression that has existed in scottish blood throughout the centuries. A trait which was used heavily in the forming of the British empire(though I hate to say that).

  • EH!

  • what a song!

  • One of my favourite Corries songs. Haunting and blood churning.
