  • Interesting stuff because its rare for most of us to hear from someone dealing with these issues, just watched "one flew over the cuckoos nest and had to do some digging into this ECT and see where it is today.

We all hope for success in treating all mental disorders but I have to say I find it a frightening idea, The thought of tampering with an organ as complex as the brain doesn't sound like a good idea. I agree that we are still in the stone age of brain science.

    Good luck Rachel et al.

  • @dfowler351976 he's going to clean it up the site, make it look more "professional." also wikipedia ECT, read patient stories on line, google it, you'll find so much memory loss like this girl, and ME! I'm not talking down, I'm ANGRY that they lie to us, and damage us for life, also ECT only lasts during the ECT treatments, then you are left with permanent yes permanent brain damage.

  • for those who want to know some real truths on ECT that they do NOT tell anyone, (heh I sound like a typical conspiracy theorist, but sadly I'm not, and I hate conspiracy theorists,) google electricshocktherapy.info...the guy who made the site made it out of rage because they tried forcing his elderly mom, yes forced shock happens in the U.S. a LOT, and he won exposing it to Australian media..the site looks tabloidish at first, but it's because he wanted to drive the point across,

  • Rachel -

I am a 30 year old guy who has been suffering from depression since May. I had to leave my job and move back home to try to get over the issues that I have been having. I really think that I can pull through this without ECT, but things are looking meek. My mom and wife are very much against it while my father is for it. I don't know what to do since I am very scared of the process and I hate that my family is torn between it. Any thoughts? Can you help?

  • @fujiyama17 All I can say is that deciding to get ECT is a very personal decision and it is not a magic pill. You are the one who will go through it, you are the one who is risking memory loss and brain damage not your family. And if you go through it you will need a strong support system to help while you recover.

  • it is what people think, or it's as bad for the brain in the old days of one flew over the cuckoos nest as it is today, there is no informed consent, same voltage, same current, they LIE, I studied this don't do ECT I network and work with ECT survivors, some are bedridden for years, they shock 12 year olds, and elderly, most women most. wikipedia ECT read controversy section. 07 famous study concluded it causes substantial brain damage, most likely permanent...it's barbaric.

  • @fujiyama17 don't do it, see my FB page Ban Electric shock therapy, or you can add me, Devon Fowler....I'm not afraid to come out after brain damage so severe from this treatment...to warn others they lie, they now shock the mentallly retarded and Alzheimers patients, who cannot give informed consent, but they lie to us all, as the shear current pulsing through the skull is enough to kill you, which is also under reported. google electricshocktherapy.info

  • The UK government has recently introduced e-petitions online.

Please sign this ‘Abolish ECT’ e-petition and relegate this barbaric 'treatment' to the history books along with lobotomy. We need 100,000 signatures to get it debated in parliament.

To sign an e-petition, you must be either:

    • a citizen of the UK (can live abroad)

    • a resident in the UK (you normally live in the UK)

It only takes a minute! Please pass this on.

    epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/16278

    Thanks

  • p.s. That was some good thinking to make the video in case you forget. But it is very scarey one would have to resort to that given the potential risk of memory loss. Yikes. You must have lived in a hell to be willing to take that chance with ECT. I suppose the risks offset the hell of living in fear/paranoia and scarey visions. I didn't know the seizure is what treats the mind, rather than the electric. Very informative.

  • I didn't know they still do shock therapy, but then again, I just found out they still do lobotomies...which seems way the fuck over the top. But anyway, I'm am glad the ECT helped. The only thing...is that thing with losing memory...and you don't know whether it will be long term or not...everybody responds different....also perhaps due to different electro settings??? Well, the bright side is if that someone did lose all memory, they wouldn't remember! * bad joke *

  • @DiaShanti it is long term I've done the reserach, I had it it destoryed my brain read up Dr. Breggin he explains how it works, this girl I feel bad for her, but it hurts memory more and more each time you get it...effect dramatically all forms of cognition...the dr.s lie, it's not safe, it is "closed head injury" brain damage. also they are really thinking schizophrenia is not so simple, many things cause delusions, voices..

  • @dfowler351976 A Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor claims to have healed over 10,000 people of "mental disorders". How? Diet, using whole foods, saying a true mental disorder that is beyond being helped thru diet and cognitive therapy is quite rare. Here in the West we have pill pushing doctors in bed with big pharma. We are cash cows. We also have the pill poppers who buy into the lie. Whole grains have a calming effect on mind whereas refined ones play with the mind.

  • @DiaShanti I couldn't have agreed more, your right on all accounts, most can beat metnal illness, but most like me, are duped into believing a quick fix like shock is the answer to the problems, in the end I would not be brain damaged had I fought hard to eat well, nourish my brain,,,agreed on whole grains

  • @dfowler351976 Di you write like me! We are both brain damaged, come join me on FB google 100,000,000 againt present day psychiatry, or my ban electroshock page. I can barely type, read, and may be going demented...

  • i spoke to my psychologist today about ect.....i am desperate....because the depression, bipolar, schizophrenia is all getting worse....and the meds is not working...and i have a horrible doctor who is not listening to me, so hopefully the psychologist will be able to get through to her.........heads up girl......your doing good, i want to feel and well again also....

  • @turandotZA listen I WAS despearte, do NOT do ECT it will damage you for life, if your lucky you may not be as damaged as most, but it's all covered up, cleverly, most are left to rot not being able to think etc. problem solve, or remember their former lives, years wiped clean...if your desperate, do not make an impulsive move you will regret, instead work HARD, mental illness is in the stone age for treatment, there are ways to get well through nutrition, meditiation, the RIGHT kinds of foods

  • 'the volts will disturb you, the watts will drive you mad. the windows will never stop shrieking'

  • U'r making urself easier for others. u don't get in their way, u don't defend urself. youre wonderful aslong as u shock all that stuff out to even be considered BEARABLE... Cause lord knows its you and not the reactions to the things they've done to you THAT MADE THIS. now go on and please them. Let them tell you how great u are and keep insulting u. FINNALLY u can take a joke. hey better yet, U CAN FINALLY roll with the punches, why the hell do there even need to be punches to begin with?

  • Thanx for your videos. Thanx for your courage. It helps us understand. Good luck

  • Thanks alot! Im nursing student and u helped me to understand better the ect. U r so brave god blesses u

  • Umm... no offence girl but I don't think seizures are ever good for you:/

  • The fact that you can laugh means you shouldn't be having ECT. ECT is for people who havn't laughed in months.

  • trust me for all those who don't believe in this think about how awfull it would be to be trapped in your own misery for eternity *your whole life* I would only reccomend this form of treatment if all other options have been exhausted but honestly if nothing elce seems to help an individuals quality of life they deserve to be happy so if trying to reset the brain like a computer through ECT for a chance to see if it will stop the pain of someone suffering than you know what give it a chance

  • I also have had ECT. I had it 3 times a week for 2 weeks while hospitalized at Regions hospital in MN. I just want to say thank you for making a video for this. I feel much less alone. I also have so many people saying how much calmer, sweeter, and generally happy I am now. I got ECT about 4 yrs ago as well and it worked well for me then also. I think if I had the chance I would get ECT once a month or more if my insurance would cover it that often. I hope all is well with you.

  • Just took the ECT journey again myself. Know all about the headaches and far away feelings. I took 6 zaps this time. Steve Doss- Dossman.

  • Just finished watching your follow-up videos on ECT (I started with the latest video first..) and I'm so glad that it worked so well for you and that you're sharing your story! I think a main reason you responded so well is because of your social support; you're in good company!

  • You say you struggled with insomnia. You might want to see my channel.

  • aww, your mom looks so happy for your change

  • did you lose your memory?

  • These things can change the way you mind funtions. Sometimes its just a chemical imbalance.

  • great advice kalloggs40 cutting out fluoride from your diet is also good for your bones! ive been a herbalist for almost hafe a year with my gramparents and he said "reishi mushroom" Ganoderma Lucidum increases brain wave activie but i am not experienced enough to say it would help any person with schizophrenia because brain wave activity might also amplifier the chemical imbalace effect but wouldnt it be worth i try? id go for it if i was struggling, uhh so much to learn so much to experience

  • Use only organic shampoos and conditioners.

Drink only bottled water that does not contain fluride.

Drink plenty of Green tea or other anti oxidant drinks.

Avoid sugar and keep to a minimum.

    Avoid take away food.

  • @kalloggs40 ... kind but useless information for people with severe mental disorders.

  • @kalloggs40 youre retarded, please kill yourself

  • 30 mins excercise everyday

No coffee and no cigarrettes (if you smoke)

Eat only organic foods and nothing with preservatives if you can avoid

  • I am not an expert but i noticed your personality has changed even from the first treatment. You actually talked better and didnt even pause. You seemed distant and too relaxed after the first treatment.

I personally wouldnt reconmend anyone doing this stuff because the brain is a very complicated system, its even more complicated than the universe.

What i would have done in your case are these things:

  • this is the first one of a series maybe you should check the others...

  • can you refuse ECT if the medication fails to work?

  • OF COURSE!!

You have to SIGN to accept ECT.

I'm not going to get into a debate about it here, as its Rachel's journal and hy should I air my opinions on her journal.Sheseems like a brave lady.Suffice to say I do not agree with ECT

  • @ziggy6848 ... though you asked a long time ago, your question is important and I don't know if anyone answered it. ECT is voluntary, except if a court decides a person is incompetent to care for themselves. This would be reserved for people that are severely mentally ill.

  • How useful were the DVDs you recorded for yourself?

  • Ha, hard to say cause I don't remember anything about last summer.

  • Your schizophrenia Rachel is without fear i thing so you can work and study with other peoples.

  • I've only just discovered your videos tonight and I think what you've done is really admirable. Thanks for sharing your experiences. :)

  • Thank you!

  • this video was very helpful to me. I'm bipolar and i'm going to have ect in a month or two. i am really ready for it because i am tired of suffering. thanks for this video.

  • Ashwagandha , an ayurvedic herb is said to this neurological problem if taken over a year or two, under the guidance of a medical doctor.

  • I love you and love heals.

  • I just look at her eyes :/

  • Rachel, well done for putting this up. I had my first ECT at the end of July and I was very scared about it. Like you I thought I would forget EVERYTHING but its only little bits and bobs I cant remember. So good you've put this up to get rid of the stigma. It lifted my mood greatly and has helped me as part of my treatment as a whole. Living with untreated mental illness is far more barbaric than being put to sleep depressed and waking up lighter! Peace and love from Scotland, Mick xxx

  • rachel you seem very smart..

  • My aunt has to go through ECT, because she has severe depression, she's been in therapy for 5 years. She has tried a lot of medication over her life time and nothing has helped. We have dealt with a lot of mental illnesses in my family, I even have Major Depressive Disorder and Borederline peronsality disorder and ADD. Nothing as bad as what you are experiencing, the point of this post is just to wish you all the best luck!

  • Best of luck to you too!

  • Good job Rachel, from a therapist. I witnessed a about 25 ECT's and also discussed the effect with those who received it. Almost all found benefit. And all the family saw + in them. your a good person for sharing. Thanks

    Kevin

  • You're welcome. :)

  • Hi Rachel, I just wanted to tell you... if you haven't already you should read "The Bell Jar". I think you may enjoy it very much.

  • Thanks, I'll check it out.

  • great work!I appreciate your courage and determination.

  • Thanks! :)

  • hi rachel,

its me again. watch if you forget. thats nice. but did you ever think that you will forget really ?

    germany

  • Rachel,

Wishing you the best. Remember one thing, we're all out here for you. Your very intelligent, creactive and ingenious not to leave out attractive. I supposed you tried everything (meds),check out this book "Change your brain, change your life" it has a depression section and they say depression is like chest pain. A syptom not a desease. There are 7 different types and it gives soom helpfull hints. Again, we'll keep you in our prayers and thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks for the great comment. :)

  • Hi Rachel, I have a sister with bipolar and my grandmother under went ECT many years ago. From what I understand it is a simple procedure and you have to be barefoot when you have the treatment, is this true?

  • I actually can't remember about the barefoot part. But simple yes.

  • hi rachel. i don't always comment but i want you to know that i watch all of your videos. even though sometimes i wish i could intervene!

  • :) Thanks. :)

  • hi there, how long are u still gonna go thru with the treatment? will u please let us know if this was the cure for you?! thx a lot, and i admire u for posting this video.

  • Well I'm done with this round of treatments and I've still been depressed.

  • i just want to give you a big hug

  • Awe, thanks.

  • SUPER Rachel:

I hope you don't forget that you love making videos. I so much look forward everyday to your videos.

I am glad that you are doing better. Now we know where you get your good looks from.

    -xavier-

  • Ha, thanks Xavier. :)

  • liebe rachel,

after having seen you in the beginning and then end of this video and from what you say - im still scpetical: did IT really help - or the suggestion it would. to me it appears treatment didnt change you. you tried it, yes. and you say now its not so bad, you kind of promote it. but I guess you just went through it and now tell it like been there, done that. i got schizophrenia myself,i do a lot of sports, i work, im improving.I never needed an electro shock therapy. there is hope.

  • I'm not saying it's for everyone and another point is that I'm still undergoing treatments. I had one today in fact. It's just something I tried to help my depression.

    Thanks for you input.

  • I wish you luck on this journey. Gawds I wish I could lend a hand and help you, I'd dearly love to help you find a balance.

  • Thank you. :)

  • Girl, I hope this is all you need to feel better, happier and healthy. I've known you for a while now and at times things seemed to have gotten pretty grim. I'm so glad that there is a positive change in your life :)

  • Awe thanks Myloflex.

  • I sure hope you don't forget about us ;)

  • Rachel,

I wish you all the best. You are a remarkable person for being so out front and letting people know about real issues relating to mental health.

  • Thanks! :)

  • My father went through this back in the 70's before i was born for alcoholism, i was born in 83 and he says that he doesnt remember any of his past after he went through shock therapy.

  • very informative video best of luck

  • Thanks! :)
