Solder knows best I hv a Compaq Presario V2000 Laptop 1.5GHZ 2gb ram Mobile AMD Semptron processor. its about 6 yrs old (windows xp- Linux ubuntu) dualboot to windows 7 the response time is better then its ever has been. The only time its slow is when you start a video from windows media center.. The only issue I had was finding the sound card drivers. Compaq told me the drivers wouldn't be available for windows 7..
and SoldierKnowsBest, you shouldn't even bother getting your video driver from Windows Update. they are nothing but basic functionality drivers. if you want it to run faster, and i'm not even talking about games (the WinUpdate drivers will not support 3D graphics modes at all) but even just regular 2D desktop usage will be improved by getting the official drivers.
you should also go download the real chipset drivers for your motherboard it will be faster. MS drivers are only temporary shims.
not sure why anybody would think a modern OS would be slow on just a 4 year old computer. windows 7 runs fine on a pentium 3 as long as you have at least a gig of RAM in it. it doesn't start being shit until you down to the low end of the P3 line or a P2. it won't run at all on a pentium 1 because it's not a 6x86 architecture CPU. it's missing a few instructions that vista and 7 require to run.

windows 7 was perfect from the start vista had some bugs but after sp1 it runs just as good as windows 7 so i never noticed a difference now xp must of been the the worst os ever made yes even worse then milenium edition

It will try and install on a 386DX as well, but warns of dire performance problems and "is not recommended", meaning it runs incredibly slowly as it has poor graphics support. The 486 machine had a VL bus graphics controller and OpenGL1.2 support, so it was able to handle XP.

Seven... I think very stable OS... like Server 2008 =) BUT Linux (what you prefer, ubuntu, mandriva, kde, etc) will be much stable if you will configure all and DO NOT touch settings. BUT you know it is impossible, and Linux does not have protection from "stupid user" so I prefer Win for "stupid user" ;)

@Kaiwynn actually @codeythesilent is correct it can be regarded as a downgrade because its performance is worse in some areas.... i.e. I downgraded my exhaust on my car to a smaller diameter model. no one stated what date the smaller exhaust was released but it is still a downgrade.
@MasterzInGrime I can also compare it to a game, like World of Warcraft. An expansion comes out in a few days. When you go to the website it offers you the opportunity to UPGRADE to the expansion. It makes no mention of it being a better anything, it just brings you to current model of the game.
Window XP came before VIsta. Therefore its an upgrade, regardless of whatever people think of it.

I have a desktop pc that I got for my first year of college in 2002, it had the first version of XP on it at the time. From 2002 - 2009 it had been completely rebuilt with all new components inside and out. So I decided last year to do the full upgrade to Windows 7 after it had crashed with XP ..and that computer runs like a champ! It acts like a brand new computer, my audio sounds great and video card works beautifully with Aero. It still runs smooth and hasn't crashed once.

@fungulf Just look for tha drivers on the manufacturer's web, use the Vista one, if there's no one for 7 yet. When installing, use compatibility mode before executing.
As a test, I was able to install Windows 7 on an ancient AMD Athlon XP processor 1GB RAM. It lacked aero because of the poor graphics card, but it still ran smooth!

@Kaiwynn actually @codeythesilent is correct it can be regarded as a downgrade because its performance is worse in some areas.... i.e. I downgraded my exhaust on my car to a smaller diameter model. no one stated what date the smaller exhaust was released but it is still a downgrade.

@MasterzInGrime I can also compare it to a game, like World of Warcraft. An expansion comes out in a few days. When you go to the website it offers you the opportunity to UPGRADE to the expansion. It makes no mention of it being a better anything, it just brings you to current model of the game.
Window XP came before VIsta. Therefore its an upgrade, regardless of whatever people think of it.

I have a desktop pc that I got for my first year of college in 2002, it had the first version of XP on it at the time. From 2002 - 2009 it had been completely rebuilt with all new components inside and out. So I decided last year to do the full upgrade to Windows 7 after it had crashed with XP ..and that computer runs like a champ! It acts like a brand new computer, my audio sounds great and video card works beautifully with Aero. It still runs smooth and hasn't crashed once.

Because by today's standards its very cumbersome in isnt user friendly, however for the average user yes its UI and useability is crap compared to Windows and Mac. Is that a good thing? Nope, its just another negative aspect of Linux. Theres a good reason why nobody uses Linux.

1) I wasn't comparing Windows 3.1 to Linux. I was comparing the ease of use of Windows 3.1 compared to Windows 7, Windows 7 is much more user friendly. You seemed to imply that if something is 'harder' to use (using a mouse to navigate and click buttons) then it is the superior OS, obviously this is not the case... And not that I care what you think but I am not stupid. We can talk about Modulus if you like?

The Kernal of Windows 3.1 is WinA386.dll .
No, Winodws 7 is not Userfriendly. How to add a required part of a libary? Impossible.

You don't get it. Linux is not an Operating system. It is a Kernal.
And Windows 3.1 is only a graphical environment like Gnome.
Linux is good because you can do everything with it. You can control all things your PC does. It is faster than Windows and you can make it stable on every platform where Windows does not work. Linuxkernal is better and better adapted to the platforms. You can adjust everything around the Linux Kernal.
Linux uses better file systems. And much more.

Because Windows is a just-install blackbox. You don't need knowledge to use it.
It is good for just starting some windowsprograms on a x86-plattform.
Most people don't want more than that. They don't even care about what their PC does when they click on an Icon and how that is done. They just want DX, which is forbidden to use on Linux, because of the MS-Patent. That is why we make a legal clone.
Only a question of time until Linux is as easy as Windows.

You are out of touch, buddy. Mac OS X has 25% market share in the new computer market. 25% of all computers bought in 2010 are running Mac OS X. That means Windows are at only 75% market share in new computers bought in 2010. That's a huge difference, brother and Microsoft is a big time loser these days. Google company is now running 95% of their machines on Mac OS X. They gave up on Windows. Why? Windows security is weak and Google is an internet company. They don't need viruses.

Macs can get viruses, they are no more secure than Windows at all. The reason people don't get viruses is due to the massive market share of computers going to Windows. Hence, people create viruses that will affect Windows. Macs make up about 10% of all computers in the world, why would people develop viruses for Macs?

My Linuxserver never crashed. May depend on the Distribution..

Out of curiosity, I installed Win7 in VMWare with 512mb ram. It ran perfectly despite the "minimum" requirements being 1gb ram. Windows 7 FTW.

I installed Windows 7 64 bit on my 4 years old Laptop, after that; My Graphic card doesnt work anymore ;) Well it works, but you cannot play anything as Windws doesnt find the Graphic card, xD

As a test, I was able to install Windows 7 on an ancient AMD Athlon XP processor 1GB RAM. It lacked aero because of the poor graphics card, but it still ran smooth!

Pff, I've got a Dell Optiplex GX 270, way older. Pentium D 3GHz, 3GB Ram, nVidia GeForce FX 5200 Graphics Card. Windows 7 runs beautifully on my system. Although, I don't recommend this setup for gaming, because it does indeed fail... But yeah, there's my two-cents.

We have at school a pc with a celeron (single-core, old socket 478 model) at 2.2 ghz, 512 mb ram and fx5200, and it runs 7 about as well/bad as xp ran.
