Thanks Onegin65! I heard her only once at Manhattan School of Music. She had the clearest tone I think I have ever heard. No extra color...she let her tone create the color. Up close it was tiny but as it moved away that laser beam would absolutely boom. What is remarkable is that the tone is so uniform. You hardly ever get the sense that she is attacks with force. The legato rolls and keeps her sounding fluid. As a Wagnerian tenor this is a treat to hear.
I don't think we will hear singing like this or on the caliber of her colleagues. Nilsson herself said she saw the business going in such a way that was not in the best interest of the singer. I still have some hope that people will wake up and try and get back to producing the kind of singers found in the golden age.
Excelente. Birgit Nilsson es única en este papel. Versión intensa a pesar de realizarla en concierto. Con Solti y la Filarmónica de Viena se alcanzó tal vez la mejor versión posible.
What's with the few complaining about illegaly uploading videos? If it weren't for them I wouldn't 've be introduced to many of the great artists and great music. Also, this is awesome! :)
@16biggles85 But who actually cares? A lot of videos on youtube are illegal but if we didn't have we'd never be able to appreciate artists like Nilsson, especially since her live performances were better and actually captured better than her studio recordings.

The DVD was sold as part of a commercial release. All normal copyright provisions apply. You may watch it at home, but you certainly can't publish it elsewhere, which is exactly what you've done.
When I first heard the immolation aria, I was rather disappointed. I was hoping Brunnhilde would sing furiously "Siegfried! Siegfried! I'm coming!!" with the melody recalling her old Valkyrie days and ending with a sustained high B which decays as she turns her back and rushes into the flames.
That was Charlie Mackerras! No wonder the orchestral accompaniment was so involved and involving. Of course, this is just as much an orchestral 'bleeding chunk' as it is a soprano solo, thrilling as Nilsson's voice is. But Mackerras and whoever the orchestra are make an equal contribution.
The best Brunhilde of all time! Her voice was unbelievable. They say that even in recording the size and greatness of Nilsson's voice was not fully captured. Those lucky enough to have seen her sing LIVE were witness to the splendor of her voice. She was born to sing Wagner. One question who is the conductor here ?
I would have liked to have been able to see her live. i heard she was LOUD, but never unpleasant. overwhelming but sublimely so someone once said. very rare in any artist.
Very moving! Wagner was "knitting" this amazing "red carpet" and Birgit was "floating" over it! At first, because of hair cut, i confused the Sir with Suitner. :-)
A force of Nature - a phenomenon. I heard her at the Met as Turandot and Elektra and will never forget it. Huge voice, rock solid technique, and a marvelous actress to boot - one of the truly great operatic stars of all time.
Fantastic indeed!! She was 55 years old when she did this, and nailed every note, every nuance. Shall we ever hear her like again? No one singing now can match her.
That was a barn burner of extraordinary proportions! I feel exalted and debased (perhaps 'humbled' is a better word) at the same time. Thank you to the one who preserved and uploaded this masterful performance.
the best grane, meine ross! love the high notes. no one sings like her, amazing.

In that case you've broken the law twice. Once in recording it off-air, and secondly by then publishing what you illegally recorded.

This is the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, at the opening of the Sydney Opera House on October 20 1973. And it's uploaded illegally.

Birgit Nilsson solved the problem of being audible over the orchestra and being worth hearing. Just listen to 3:40 to 5:40. Stunning.
