I watch this and still cannot believe the Isles won against the defending Cup champs. The Penguins were perhaps as close as you could get from an unbeatable team in 1993, and that the Isles managed to win in OT in Pittsburgh was simply unreal. I'm not an Isle fans, but in respect to the great dynasty of the early 1980s, I hope they'll rise once again.
@TheLoserSakaTheOiler Absolutely nothing similar about the situations. The 2010 Pens squad wasn't one of the greatest lineups ever assembled on ice. Nor did it blow through the regular season for a franchise record in points a year after winning it's second straight cup. Habs had WAY more of a chance on paper than this particular Isles team did. This is sincerely one of the greatest playoff upsets in the history of the NHL. Thanks Volek you dick!
Old school announcers call it right. The current Pittsburgh announcers would have said Pilon hit Stevens with a high hit and should be suspended. How times have changed!
@mickreally what a great game it was and a happy ending for the Isles from N.Y i thought back in 1993 the boys are back in town and a new Era of the Islanders would begin Al Arbour had a really good though smart team together back then.but montreal was a bit to powerful for the Isles in the conference finals.scotty bowman and Al Arbour two of the greatest Hockey Wiseman ever coached a hockey team
As a Habs fan, I remember that I was really anxious about the outcome of this match. Man! I was jumping out of joy when Volek sent that slapper in the back of the net in OT as I knew miracles were possible... not so long after all the pundits wrote the Habs off in front of Quebec, Boston and Pittsburgh as the big favorites in the Wales Conference.
@Beginstheman Yeah, you Habs fans must've thought for sure the Habs would play Pittsburgh in the conference final in '93, but after Volek scored that goal, the Pens, the Cup favourites, were OUT, & the Stanley Cup was up for grabs! Instead of playing the powerful Pens, it was the Habs vs the upstart Isles, 2 suprise teams in the conference final that year. :-O :-)
the N.Y islanders had a great team spirit and very good and skilled players in the 1992/1993 Season
Glenn Healy, Ray Ferraro, Pierre Turgeon, Uwe krupp, Tom Kurvers ,Steve Thomas, Malakhov and many more guys etc surely the pens were the favourite Team back then and they had a great team too Lemieux, jagr, stevens, but i think the key to this success for the islanders win was they had a great team spirit and the best goalie Glenn Healy with Patrick Roy from the Habs.
@readytorock865 True! Teams who were the 3rd seed in each division were the ones to come through into the final four after all division leaders were nailed in the 1st and 2nd rounds. A truly epic playoff year 1993 was.
@Beginstheman Yeah, the Islanders, Habs, Leafs, & LA Kings all finished 3rd in their respective divisions in the regular season, & yet, they made up the Final 4 teams that year! Crazy! As a Leaf fan, it was the 1st time in ages that we had a great playoff run to remember, but same goes for the Isles, Kings, & Habs that year as well....
It is so funny how things come full circle...that year it was a mediocre Islanders team (87 points) beating the Capitals and defending champion Penguins, only to lose to the Canadiens in the conference finals. 17 years later, a mediocre Canadiens team (88 points) did the exact same thing (scoring two huge upsets by beating the Capitals and defending champion Penguins) before losing in the conference finals. GO Islanders
Somebody please tell me how to find footage of Kasparitis Hip Check on Joe Mullen would be breakaway against the boards. It happened in this series. Please help!!!
Hard to feel sorry to Stevens at about 0:52 (he ends up leaving on a stretcher). He goes for the cheapshot on the icing call and gets smoked, then lands on his face. So much for intimidation and trying to be tough. Good player but he deserved it, karma's a bitch.
Amazing that the Isles won this series considering then other then PP shifts in Game 7....Turgeon didnt play and was way less then 100% when he did. And he was a BEAST that year--132 points.
This game SUCKED! The Pens should have won their third straight Cup in 1993. Kevin Stevens smashing his face on the ice in the first period, then losing in OT. SUCKED SUCKED SUCKED! The I might have known when Stevens smashed his face on the ice that the Pens would lose this game. The Pens outshot the Islanders 45-20 in this game. I loved Ulfie Samuelsson's hit on Neely in 1991. Neely was a pussy. Ah, well, the Pens won this cup back in 2009! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
@Spiggy78 There's no disputing that it was a 3rd straight Stanley Cup for Pittsburgh on paper, but what happens once the opening face-off begins is entirely another story.Seriously,I remember everybody saying that nobody was going to beat them that year and for good reason because they went into the playoffs on an 18 game undefeated streak or something like that, not to mention Mario Lemieux tore up the league after his return.
@landrykkb Yeah, the Pens won a league-record 17 straight games( STILL a record to this day )& then tied New Jersey in their final regular season game. Then they beat the Devils in 5 in the 1st round, meaning they entered the series vs the Isles on a 22-0-1 run! :-O The Pens looked unstoppable, everyone expected they'd win their 3rd straight Stanley Cup, & then...the Isles shocked them in Game 7! :-O :-)
What happened after this? In 1994, the Islanders were swept by the Rangers. Than what? The Islanders changed their logo- a Fisherman, the Gorton's Fisherman. Than what happened? No playoff appearances in seven (7) years! Other teams change their colors to a darker one. The Penguins went back to the skating Penguin. The Islanders, after much protest, went back to their traditional logo. Now all that's left is for Buffalo to put the Bison and Sabres back on their jersies.
1993 NHL PLAYOFFS was Ice Hockey at its best. I can't believe they are playing MASH theme at the Igloo. The 1993 Penguins team honestly put them up with the 1986 Oilers, 1996 RedWings are teams I've seen in my lifetime as some of the best teams that didn't win the Stanley Cup.
I am sure there are about 20 teams I didn't mention.
Isn't that what is so wonderful about hockey? I remember when Joe Nieuwendyk got stuffed on the goal line by Curtis Joseph, then Marchant scored, I went to bed crying. What an amazing sport.
well, despite me being a wings fan, the pens did win it. i felt bad for hossa, but really, crosby, malkin, and fleury had to get one eventually. congrats to them and all pens fans
If you can take out the President's Trophy winner without your leading scorer (Turgeon), more power to ya. And this is from a Ranger fan. That Penguins team was loaded, but Healy just outplayed Barrasso plain and simple.
The Pens would have had to play the rest of the playoffs without Stevens had they won this game. And Montreal (who did win the Cup in 1993) was on quite a roll.
I have loathed the stupid Penguins and their fans since the beginning of time - I went absolutely MENTAL when that OT goal was scored. The best part is the eerie silence while the islanders are celebrating just before "it is quiet again in Pittsburgh" is said. Fuck you Penguins - you will never win another cup again.
Kind of a pot shot since Pens fans were NOWHERE to be found until they were good again when Crosby came to Pittsburgh. No one gave a shit about them because no one went to the games.
I don't think that's inevitable, but there's a good chance of that. The isles biggest selling point is their history, so I think moving them, helps stopping them from being moved. Who knows what happens if The leafs don't cheap shot Peca and Jonsson out of the 02'series, but what are you going to do?
this has to be the greatest upset in Hockey, if not sports hustory. Not only beating the two-time defending champs, but without our leading scorer! David Volek's name will never be in the rafters, but all Islander fans will will always love him
Yet somehow the Islanders managed to make it to game 7 and then "only win" because of Barrasso? The Islanders won because of Healy, Kasparaitus, and Ferraro.
I just sat back over lunch enjoying these... What can I say that isn't already shown in your videos? Yeah it's been hell since`93 and Buttman's too rapid of an expansion watering down all the offense into this silly game they play now. However because of the Hall of Fame and YOU TUBE(fans like you as well)the Islanders legacy will never, EVER, be forgotten.
This was a great moment indeed. I remember this game vividly. Every second was intense. I'm so sad that this is the last Islanders playoff glory to date.
