You're allmost right, Ape inc (worked on mother) became Creatures inc (worked on pokemon) however, Satoshi Tajiri(can't spell DX) and Ken Sugimori acctually came up with the idea and the first 151 pokemon(other pokemon had other people helping with designs)

However, I heard somewhere that Satoshi and Ken played Mother 1, which would also explain the similarities between the protagonist designs and some of the pokemon (most notably Mewtwo) resemble enemies and characters from mother 1.

It says in the description that the people who made the MOTHER series also made POKEMON, (Ape became Creatures Inc.) but there's a huge controversey about mewtwo being a refference to Giegue (remember, Giegue came first)
