  • Lol these days a cleric can enter a zone like these and everything dies just from their presence and clerics will never be dps :P

  • This isn't the original soundtrack for this video.....

  • best game ever

  • Yep yep i remember when eq first came out was so hooked i would fall asleep at computer while playing would get pissed when i would wake up and be missing a full lvl or couldnt remember where i died at lol good times good times

  • EQ will live forever

  • Used to play on the same server as these guys, in a competing (during Velious, at least) guild.

EQ ruled, but things started going downhill with Luclin. Didn't like the new models and AA points.

We all remember EQ as awesome because we had so much invested in our characters. Dying was a PITA, grinding was extremely long, especially that lvl 59. But I can't see anyone who never played the game before getting into it now.

  • do people still play this game

  • Anyone here remember the shortlived monster patch? Where you could choose to start the game as a lowbie monster in one of the noobie zones. A level 1 rat or a lvl 3 skelleton (if you were lucky since skellies had armor and weapons sometimes which increased your monsters stats) You could go around and kill other mobs and level up (having a level 8 decaying skeleton in a level 1-4 zone felt awesome) or you could harass players. Real funny.

  • lol Actually that patch was coming out when I quit, which of course was all over the EQ website at the time. Later on I was talking to other EQers about the monster patch because it seemed like Sony just erased it in all forms. Only one other person actually remembered it and for the first time in a long time, I felt like I didn't just dream that monster patch up! rofl

  • haha yep. it was live for all of about a couple hours if i remember correctly...they took down the servers and patched it out almost immediately.

and just like Sony, they ditched the idea

  • It was a great concept, but they didn't expect the negative impact it would have on low level players. Ultimately they just decided to give Monster Classes in an expansion to expand on the idea, but not allow monster vs player combat.

I do however remember that for the longest time, certain pets were "Scowls, Ready to Attack" for anyone other than the master and the master could actually have the pet attack someone without any repercussions. My level 49 pet was that way when cap was 50.

  • Yes, this was one of the greatest gaming experiences I ever had. It was so freaking hilarious!

  • LOL I love Sshaerra Temple. Or how ever you spell it.

  • I want to see a game that's deep and hardcore like a mud (like eq was based on) but a little more forgiving like WoW. Somewhere in the middle...with LOTS of conent. ANd not just monsters to kill...lots of stuff so if you get bored of mobs you can do other things. And good quests...easy ones, epic ones, and the ones that are tricky to figure out so nobody knows how to do them for a year. (usually they have to do with waiting around 2 weeks for ONE mob to spawn lol)

  • Vanilla wow was absolutely great. No, not in the later patches, but right around the first honor patch. pvp balance was still good, gear gaps weren't that huge, there was room for out of the box stuff and grinding wasn't mandatory. You could still raid cities without being utterly discouraged by the spawning of 100 elite guards and there was still some immersion. Everquest had more player freedom then wow now, but everything took 10 times longer. WoW has hardly any freedom anymore.

  • There are two things I've heard about mmorpgs that rang true.

    1. They are a lot like another country - they have their own laws, their own economies, and typically their currency has real world value. They are basically little, new, countries.

    2. As such, economies are incredibly difficult to keep balanced - eventually people find ways to 'manipulate the system' and things unbalance for one class of people or another. And attempts to rebalance it destroys the freedom of the market/game.

  • until someone figures out how to perfect human society (lol, might take a while considering the current state of affairs), the best bet for mmorpgs is to expect a life of around 5 years tops and then design a new one.

The old game is still good for the long term players who don't want to leave...but to catch new fish every 5 years you need a new mmorpg with a new idea and keeping all the old good ideas.

Who knows, maybe one day the real world will learn from all these virtual ones.

  • Yes, but the stuff in WoW is ridiculous. There's keeping people from exploiting and then there is acting like a Nazi regime. Loads changes they made which restricted gameplay weren't needed. Stomping out City raids in the way they did, Resillience (completely ruined itemisation)invisible walls everywhere (who cares that people can get into an empty undone Mount Hyal) I like out of the box stuff, which is allmost impossible in WoW now. Imho they went to far. Let's hope they get it right one day

  • WoW doesn't compare to EQ.

EQ was a challenge, everything you did was an adventure.

WoW is about soloing level 900 elites for phat epix.

  • EQ had it's huge flaws aswell tho. If you weren't in some uber guild you shouldn't even bother logging on in EQ, which was no fun either. Oldschool WoW had the raids from EQ (altho a little less hardcore) and the solo stuff, it was a decent mix. Current WoW is....meh. I played WoW from the first open Beta wave and enjoyed it up untill Outland.

  • I enjoyed WoW, but no where near as much as old school EQ.

I was in a high level guild in EQ though, so I got to see the end game content. I preferred the non-instance raids... was fun racing other guilds on rare spawns etc :)

In WoW, I could solo a lot of the old raid instances at 80, where as in EQ even content from 3-4 expansions prior were a challenge

  • My best MMO moments come from EQ aswell, but I tried playing it again a while ago and..ugh..

I agree on that EQ did a great job of keeping balance between expansions. In WoW, as soon as an expansion hits, everything pre that is immediatly trivialized. There is no reason whatsoever to do old content in WoW except nostalgia, which is a huge shame.

  • Spot on... I reactivated my account early last year for some 'fun'.

There was nobody around. The best part about EQ was that it forced people to work together, it really created an amazing community.

I guess I did have some fun revisiting some old content, like making my monk another Robe of the Whistling Fists, or visiting ToV etc.

  • What you are describing is EQ2. It can be deep and hardcore with raid instances, but solo friendly as well. It is more forgiving than EQ1, but not as pansy as WoW. There is a lot more to do besides hacking monsters. World events, the best crafting out there, holiday events, in game battle card game, the absolute best in game housing options that actually ad to the game. Plus it has 50 times more content than WoW, and a community that isn't stuck in freshman year in high school.

  • One difference that strikes when comparing EQ to WoW is how stuff feels so much more epic in EQ. dunno exactly how and why. The rediculously short clipping distance in WoW might be one thing. In Everquest you could stand on a mountain and see mobs from pretty much all across the zone, in WoW stuff doesnt clip into view untill you're almost on top of it which makes zones feel much smaller.

  • Maybe it was also because if you died in EQ that was a BIG problem. And, you couldn't just run around the levels and see how far you could get...because you'd lose your corpse somewhere and it would be a pain in the ass to continue playing after that (plus the xp loss..ouch)

So you had to take things more seriously.

WoW is more carebear. Don't be me wrong though..EQ was a little too hardcore...remember that kid who killed himself?

  • The lack of death penalty doesnt bother me in WoW. Losing xp is just wasted time and the accumilating res timer in Old WoW was penalty enough. Nothing more annoying then having to wait 10 minutes to res after dieing many times in a good world pvp battle(/mourn world pvp). For me Arenas and daylies killed WoW. The fact that you are 100% forced to do Blizzes way. Want pvp? no choice but to do arenas for that one single resillience set and look like everyone else doing the threadmill

  • Nice video, dude.

EQ will always be the best.
