My kanji is very poor so I don't know exactly what the Kanji 'Kono' means by itself. But I know it is the kanji for 'kono-mu' which means to like or be fond of.. It is also the kanji for suki which means 'like'.
The kanji itself is made up of woman and child so it probably takes meaning from the relationship one would expect a mother to have with her child..
