Islam didn't allow adoption only because adoption cancels the identities of the biological parents. On the other hand, patrons of orphans were promised the highest of God's paradise. You can add new members to your family, but only while retaining their original biological identities.
From what I heard in the video, there's a strong confusion between Islam the religion, and local cultures. Unfortunately, some aspects of the culture are often tagged as an "Islamic Law".
