NATO is no longer needed in the same form as a military alliance and the Europeans have advanced their security, including their security doctrine, different than America's. This Col. Sam Gardiner is a liar then. There are no tactical nuclear weapons in South Ossetia. Also nuclear missile launchers, even the tactical ones, are always larger than the bombs carried by the jets. SS-21 with conventional tactical missiles could have been used, however.
Not to mention that there is no point in aiming nuclear weapons at Georgia which poses no threat to Russia militarily.

The reality is that Europeans and Americans do not have even the same frameworks when it comes to security issues. NATO was needed in the soviet threat and answered what to do about Germany. NATO is no longer needed in the same form as a military alliance and the Europeans have advanced their security, including their security doctrine, different than America's. The European Security Strategy is holistic and places military as one of many other options. Good for Europe!

Yes, and there is a need for adding minorities rights to the EU-Gerogia Action Plan of May 2004. Like Kosovo, the South Ossetia need to have their human rights protected and respected.

Russia crushes 'breakaway' republics in Russia but forces two 'breakaway' republics on Georgia - two russian 'Sudetenlands' - where Russia issues russian passports to people on Georgian territory to establish their Greater Russian Reich constitutional hegemony, their 'Sudetenland' policy, and arms it's 'peacekeepers' with heavy weapons beyond what is allowed. The separatist armies provocate by skirmishing constantly with Georgia.

Excuse me, but Russia is not "screwing the EU." A lot of that is bushshit-and I prefer to read actual international agreements between the EU-Russia, not tabloids, and publications like EUBusiness.
Russia should back EU membership for Serbia. The missile system is provocative and the EU should distance itself from it. Why is America backing aggression against ethnic Russians in Georgia?
I also see that the EU-Georgia Action Plan contains little for the protections of minorities- it should!

NATO is an anachronism from the end of World War II, and it is basically an arm of the US Defense Department. On the other hand, Washington does not dictate EU policy. If NATO members want to maintain current status, fine. But I will organize with others to oppose ANY expansion of NATO to the east. Treated fairly and not provoked, Russia could be a great business partner for the EU.

Russia could be a good partner with both the EU and the US. That includes in counter-terrorism and security cooperation.
The problem is that neocon foreign policy is about maintenance of the American primacy in Europe and they do this through demanding that NATO be the "premier security organization."
European security cooperation outside of NATO is occurring anyway.
We have a growing European defense industry that is causing even more EU defense cooperation.

This is why Russia decided to limit European and American oil companies in its own territory. In business there is a law: you do something for me and I will do something for you. What you prefer to read may not be as important as what is really going on. The people of South Ossetia are not ethnically Russian or Georgian and that territory is not part of Russia but the territory does belong to the sovereign country of Georgia.

Simply put, because without Russia there can never be a unified Europe. The European part of Russia is nearly the size the EU. The EU leaders understand that very well and eventually Russia and the rest of the European countries will be unified, although it is unknown under which leadership and conditions it will happen.

I don't understand how someone who supports Georgia and criticizes the Russian reporting claims that CNN and Fox are "free" and "fair".
The whole time they were intentionally manipulating opinion by only showing killed Georgian civilians and completely ignored the South Ossetians who were killed.

The EU wants to have its own structural and organization separate from NATO. The EU has independent missions in places like Chad. The reality is that some East European leaders prefer American hegemony than European cooperation and the European project.
This episode is further evidence that Europe needs to distance itself from America.
Germany especially has good relations with Russia and Gazprom and in counter terrorism. We should want this to continue.

We ALL should work together cooperatively and I agree the EU should handle their own affairs(it would save us a ton of defense spending). That shouldn't mean that the USA shouldn't voice it's opinion on who should be granted EU membership or possible EU defense scenarios, But the final decision should and does rest with the EU. Where is proof that Yushenko was poisoned by the Russian security forces? This is what is called biased allegations without any proof. Even Austrian doctors said that Yushenko had some sort of a disease, most likely leprosy.
Again, where is proof that Russian security forces brought polonium to the UK? When Russians requested such proof, London was unable to provide them.

Yes- some in Europe are waking up to the problems posed by being join at the hip with Washington.
The provocations directed against Russia in the past few years are intended to keep the American flag planted in Europe and keep NATO on life supports. This is a response to greater European defense and security cooperation that is separate from NATO.
Russia should encourage Serbia to become a EU member and for greater policies that shift EU foreign policy away from Washington.
