if the 4.0 doesn't require the last step top stitching, theoretically would it be okay to leave it undone on the 3.0's after you replace the elastic?

@thelightsgodown : Your diaper your rules ;) Depending on how much stitching you remove at the casing, you'll at least want to top stitch to where the end of the elastic is.
Thanks for this tutorial! The paper clip tip makes this SO much easier to do with a machine.
