The Dark Ages weren't called that because life was particularily crap at the time. They're called that because so little was written down at the time.

Wrong. First of all, you're assuming that people were writing more before Christianity came along. Actually, not much was being written at all. Secondly, you're in the wrong era. During most of the Dark Ages, much of Europe was still pagan and the church wasn't as powerful as it became later.
People were not living long in those days the average life span was 30 to 40 years if they were lucky and ilness did not get them.
