  • Wow! You are so talented, it's amazing. I really enjoy all your creative way of music :-)))

  • @oddmusic do you know of any decent videos or anywere that has a decent tutorial on how to learn the tecnique of throat singing?

  • @musicman9901 Hey musicman, check out: khoomei (dot) com That is Steve's site (he's throat singing in the video) and has resources and online lessons, a forum for new and experienced throat singers, etc. -- John

  • @oddmusic thanks so much, I'll check it out.

  • Sounds like he just ate a bad meal in Taco bell

  • God, his Kargyraa is wonderful...

  • yeah man tuva an old mongolian whistle throat singing ,,,,,,,,,i heard it in the mid ninetees when i was a trucker ,,,,,at 5 in the morning it gave me goos skin and i still love this music,,,,,,,,,,,heavy compliments to u the singer whos not a mongolian

  • no way is the guy singing and whistling at the same time?

  • @ShaolinPete Steve is "throat singing", so he's not whistling, he's singing the low notes and high whisle-like notes at the same time, by splitting different harmonics in his voice. Search for "throat singing", it's pretty amazing stuff.

  • Im loving this style of music. I love the old feel to it. I dont however know where I can find any to purchase. Can anyone suggest some artists or albumns that I can buy?

  • @133maxiboy Check out "Huun Huur Tu" and "Chirgilchin" they are some of the best Tuvan artists out there. A member of Chirgilchin made my igil instrument. -- John

  • @oddmusic

Thank you very much. So the music type (genre?) is called Tuvan?

  • @133maxiboy Tuva is a tiny country, near Mongolia, and the people who live there are called "Tuvans". So the genre would be called something like "Tuvan Throat singing". But if you look up Tuvan music, much of it will include throat-singing and the "igil" instrument(s), as well as a couple other instruments depending on the song.

  • @133maxiboy 'Sedaa', a rather modern group from czech I think remembering. They mix traditional elements like dual throat singing and an igil with a very fit Greek funk-style Cajon drummer. A very unique feel, and definetely a treat to listen to.

  • @133maxiboy Look up "Back Tuva future"

  • i have two questions and it would be soo great if u could take the time to answer me :)

    first is this song chinese?

and can u please tell me the lyrics of what the chinese wife sings ?:))))

that would make me unbelievable happy :D

thanks for expanding my horizon with this btw<3

  • @DeejayCoolja I think you are talking about the song we did for the Operation Flashpoint game. The words are actually not real words at all, the video game maker wanted us to make up the words, so they made up their own little language for the song, so they used sounds that conveyed the "feeling" of the song and how they wanted it to feel emotionally. They didn't want to use real words in case something might get said that was offensive in another language, since they don't understand Chinese.

  • @oddmusic

not even the womans lyrics ?

brcause they sound so chinese ( i speak chinese a little)

anyway thank u som much!! :)

  • What the whoah. I really enjoyed this!

  • Did this guy do the soundtrack for the OperationFlashpoint game?

  • @TheClittComander Yes, we did the soundtrack for Operation Flashpoint, and the throat-singers wife sang vocals on it as well. Good ears! :)

  • @oddmusic Cool ,i played that game for a few months, the soundtrack is forever etched into my brain.

  • very nice....

  • i like the string thingy! :)

  • Beautiful expression of the human soul...and our ability to create emotions from sound.

  • This is quite incredible. I remember seeing the great documentary "The Story of the Weeping Camel" and this very much reminded me of it. This is surely a magical and sacred kind of singing and it is just beautiful!

  • I LOVE IT, Beautiful AND PAWERFUL,

the planet NED MORE MUSIC LAKE THIS

  • eh ce gars fait du chant diaphonique aussi bien que les tuvan (ce qui est rare pour des non-asiatique)

@steve sklar: yeah man! you make me crazy... you sing throat-singing like few men can, and with facility for kaargyra

never stop: you have the good sound!!!

  • How can you tell the difference between tuvan and mongolian throat singing ? I thought there was some sygyt and a bit of kargyraa

  • i think thats his voice

  • thats throat singing, look up tuvan throat singers, sounds like a didgideroo from austrailia

  • that is amazing music

I never heard anything like it before

  • how does the singer get the hose sound at time stamp 1:31 to 1:45 and at 2:11 to 2:26 ? or did he sneak in an instrument ? ;-) how is that sound acheived? i would like to do that..

    awsome work play guys.. awsome..!

  • That's a Tuvan throat-singing style called sygyt.

  • that sounds is achieved by closing your airway smaller as your true vocals are vibrating still hard to do but i hit a few higher notes slightly i lost vibration an d cough regualr everyday talknig voice came back.

  • what is the tuning for the igil?

  • root and fifth

  • that was beautiful man ;)

  • FANTASTIC!!!

    THANK YOU!

  • what hat is he wearing? where is it from

  • @boomunderscore0 He's wearing a traditional Tuvan hat (country of Tuva). Steve is from the US, but has traveled to Tuva and knows a lot of singers and musicians from there.

  • @oddmusic srry but he's wearing a traditional halh hat not tuvan, halh is on of the main tribe of mongolia like tuvan

  • Hypnotic and transcendent!

  • Absolutely fantastic. Synthesizers have nothing on this!

  • John! What wonderful and deeply moving music! I have heard many things since finding YouTube and you are one of the very best I have run across! TOTALLY FACINATING and mesmerizing! This is much more than ambiance, I think it is very Spiritual...it touches me that deeply. Keep this going for as long as you are able!

  • Absolutely mesmerizing and beautiful! Music IS life. Thanks for all the great vids.

  • You're welcome, thanks for watching!

  • I must say I've really been loving the vids. It's great to have one in the background and just sketch to it.

This one is especially amazing! The range of different sounds made by Steve Sklar completely floored me! It was really unexpected. I actually didn't realize he was the one making some of the sounds at first. Really great to listen to!

And of course, the igil is beautiful. They mesh really perfectly. Thank you so much for sharing! I'd never have seen/heard this without the vids!

  • Thanks very much! :)

  • I can't say that I've heard this either, but I find it very fascinating, to say the least. I like the uniqueness. Thanks for sharing, I love this Igil too. :)

  • Thanks, all for the kind words of appreciation. It's gratifying to know that you're enjoying our music. And it's always a real treat to play with John, whatever instrument he's playing... and on igil, he's "best in the west!"

There are many more vids with John and I at my YouTube site, including two more from this concert.

    Enjoy,

    Steve Sklar

  • never heard this before.i like this.nice voice,playing.mary

  • Wow, I've heard throat-singing and the igil before. But never like this. Great work. It's wonderful.

  • Thanks very much! We both love the Tuvans and their music, but we do our own kind of thing. Since they are the masters of the traditional style, we'd rather watch and listen to them do it best, and take our stuff in our own direction. Steve is pals with the guys in Huun Huur Tu, and my igil was made by Aldar of the group Chirgilchin, so we do have a connection to the guys.

  • Please Is it possible to buy Tuvan igil somewhere ? And by the way man ur music is great, I have all ur videos checked =)

  • Thanks for the comment! :)

Search Ebay for "igil". There is a guy named "muza-sat" who sells authentic igils. I have not played one of them before, but he has great feedback and we have communicated in the past and he is an honest seller. If "Huun Huur Tu" or Chirgilchin are touring near you, they sometimes have a couple instruments to sell as well. Hope that helps.

  • oh amazing.

  • This is great guys! Love the combination of the Igil and the throat singing. Seem to go naturally together.

  • thank you! Yes they go together great, the igil was invented by the Tuvan's, who are most known for their throat singing, and almost always accompanied by an igil or 2 or 3.

  • i wanted to send you a video back but couldnt<<i can throat sing

my friend said its a bhutanese style or tibetan one i do

    ?? i just do it

    ive been to a lama

but lolol forgot to throat sing to him,,i was to in awed by him and his countinance..lol

  • SO glad I subscribed. new worlds before me.

I'm "favoriting" everything you've played, and shared -everything you touch it seems...

Inspires me to reach further in my own.

  • Thanks very much Sccott, I appreciate your comments and am glad the music might help set off a little spark in your creativity, if I were to thank all the people who've inspired me, I'd be doing it all day long, so I'm happy to be able to share a little of what I can offer :)

  • Beautiful

  • wooow! it's a kind of magic!! very beaultiful!

his voice looks like a didgeridoo's song i think..

    very very very crazy song!

    i love it!

is Tuvan Igil the name of this instrument, right?

    man! I'm facinated for it!

  • Yes, "igil" is the correct name, and it is from the country of Tuva, so people from there would be called "Tuvans".

  • this is interesting and awesome.

  • Very impressive. It's always cool to watch what you put, it always opens my eyes to the other forms of music out there.

  • fascinating!

  • Awesome! Always great to see you at work!

  • throat singing is Mongol tradition is it not? Well i just saw a lot of it in Mongol the movie lol. Good show.

  • both Tuvan and Mongolian, they are next to each other, styles are a little different though

  • Holy shi-!

    Steve ftw

  • I love Tuvan Throat singing, and you did a beautiful job of playing the igil

  • thank you!

  • your quite welcome

  • Very very cool! Steve's awesome.

All that's missing for the ultimate Tuvan space jam is Richard Feynman on percussion. :)

  • oh he was probably there in some dimension :)

  • love your videos, theyre always interesting

  • sounds like some eastern folk song played backwards ;DD marvelous as always :)

  • Woah - gorgeous!! (Love the studio lighting, too). :) Was Steve also producing the whistling/flute sound?

  • Thanks! Yes, he is accentuating the high harmonics that are in all of our voices, while suppressing other harmonics. Incredible stuff he can do.

  • Thats so metal!
