The suns magnetic field is violently fluctuating, whereas the earths field is more stable. The reason why the sun's magnetic poles can change so fast, is because if the high activity in the sun's core, the reason why the earth's magnetic poles doesn't shift like that is cos of the low activity in our core. However, it is just a guess... but I think it makes sense

it was wondering... maybe some of you can answer me ..... if the sun flips the magnetic poles every 11 years... do that means that maybe the earth can also change their magnetic poles faster than the scientifics said of maybe tousand of years ? thx and sorry for my bad english ...im learning :)

@Knas88 Well I would venture a guess a say no. Here is why: the magnetic field of earth is different than the one on the sun. The suns magnetic field is violently fluctuating, whereas the earths field is more stable. The reason why the sun's magnetic poles can change so fast, is because if the high activity in the sun's core, the reason why the earth's magnetic poles doesn't shift like that is cos of the low activity in our core. However, it is just a guess... but I think it makes sense

How exactly does one find magnetic fields remotely? It sounds expensive to fly a probe near the surface of the sun, with a magnetic compass just to send back telemetry.

Sunspots = visual markers for magnetic fields
Solar cycle = magnetic poles flip every 11 years, so one cycle (north to south back to north) is 22 years
Sunspot activity is the same regardless of which way the magnetic poles are set, thus:
Sunspot cycle = sunspot activity go from weak to strong to weak again, 11 years

@xyxean Yes it will, in about 7.5 billion years the Sun will become a red giant.
There is good news, the Earth will be totally uninhabitable by vertebrates in about one billion years so we wont have to worry about it. Also, the Sun will end up as a white dwarf, basically a really big(About the size of the Earth) and ultra-dense radioactive diamond that wont cool off for a few trillion years.

What will end is our planet not the entire world... @sandslash123 If the sun is plasma/electric then it could be magnetic, plasma temps are cool, maybe thats why when we see a comet nearing the sun it does not melt, i'm sure that what we are told is a partial lie about the sun and diameter as well, the science community is up nasas butt and blindly believe it all science and history has many misleading lies changed to dumb us down since 1700's by the illuminatists and vatican :(
