First and foremost, it would be relatively simple watch this in real time, especially the sonar. Second, it would also be pretty simple to write an algorithm to calibrate the sonar based on noise in the resolution. Not having to pull in the device would probably be hugely convenient.

Universities love these kinds of projects for students. They are not terribly difficult and they give them real world experience. I hope that is useful to you.
