A glorious record of an amazing singer. But I must rebut your statement that she's hardly known. I'm 51 years old. Back in the days of the vinyl LP, there were many discount record shops where opera queens could go to find 'pirate' or 'historic' recordings. I've know Galvany and 'U vidrizar' for more than 30 years.
@joysword I too am a big fan of Galvany, but I have never heard this selection before. I have both her Preiser and OASI LPs, as well as assorted items in various collections, but no luck with this. Do you know if it was ever issued on LP?
You may read what Nicolaus Harnoncourt said about her. He became totally NUTS when he heard her! (and ran out to buy her records.) (if you´ll google you´ll find it.)
Thank you. Only a pompous snob would not enjoy the singing of MG. Maybe she sang in a PI way but she at least had the ability to do so and BRAVA. I want to hear all her recordings. This is added to my Favorite's list.. I love your channel.
My God. I had never even HEARD of her. What a knock-out! (better than Hidalgo.)(I still have goosebumps here.) Also, amazingly good technically.(I mean the recording.)
The brilliance of Galvany's voice and the virtuosity of her singing come through loud and clear in this performance. She is also very much in the spirit and style of the piece. I wonder whether we have any reports on how her voice sounded in the theater.
Titta Ruffo in his memoires mentions singing with Galvany on stage. He spoke well of her and I gather she projected well or she would have been inaudible in duets. .If he thought she were off the wall he would not have been shy in saying so.
I have a feeling:
a. She toned down her more exhuberent things in the theater:
and/or
b. Audiences were more accepting of her style back in the day.
I thought you might like this disc, Jerzy. I picked it from a group of 4 with you in mind! The recording was made May 12, 1908. There were 22 "G&T Victors," most of which were never listed in U.S. catalogs. This is one of the most obscure and rare of the Galvany records. It's astonishing how bright and "forward" this 100-year-old disc is.

Bel Canto can return if all the Voice Teachers would STOP teaching and LISTEN to the Golden Age of Singers

Agreed.

Aquí está la prueba de aquello que se llamó la Escuela Ibérica del Canto de Coloratura...
¡Es increíble! Una voz de soprano no exenta de densidad, pero con la agilidad de un demonio.

You may have noticed that I'm more than a bit partial to Maria Galvany. She never fails to amaze and enchant.

I, too, have wondered how her voice sounded in the opera house. Never that I've ever read about her provided a clue in that regard.

@meltzerboy
If she returned from the dead and announced a concert I would rush to buy a ticket.

@65attila I would too, but first I'd give her a little time to get her bearings and adjust to modern life and the contemporary opera world!

I agree. This is my only posted video that I'm
continually drawn to revisit--daily--two or three times. I love the selection and her treatment of it.
