  • I've tried doing this but i can't really seem to get the handle of this lol. I've tried to learn this because i normaly gaurd every move that is thrown at me whitch ends up breaking my guard. I've tried guard impacts, but they are way too risky. I'm not talking about the ones where it depletes your gauge i'm talking about tiras guard impacts that you have to time right. Do you think you can show me how to guard impact online sometime? If you can send a message to me.

    You should keep in mind that guard impact usually only work against a certain type of move. For example, Tira's Gloomy Mood B+K GI only works against vertical attacks, and I'm not sure but I believe it's only for vertical attacks that come from above.

    You could spend some time in training to check which GI counters which type of attack. Also, the type specificness is another reason GI is risky.

    with this move namco wasn't pandering to the casual crowd. This is an advanced technique that will probably heavily influence the high level tournament scene. it's not always just about the 12 year olds who play xbox live..

  • @norik434 Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. If you mistime the forward tap in 3rd strike, you are wide open, hence risk. This seems like no risk.

    Guard impact: X-box 360: back + Right Trigger. (At least, that's the case with all charcters I practiced with so far.)

    Also, some characters have a guard impact move that does not use up meter. Pyhrra, for example, can press Right Buffer, however, these non-meter GI's seem to have a smaller timing window.

    In my experience, Just Guards are practically useless online due to lag. If you have a 5 bar connection, great! But I'm lucky to get 2 bars.

  • @threewiseman1 Check your own connection and try setting your setting to 4+ bars and local region.  This is game has been acclaimed for having an excellent net code and it's true.

    Yeah, I've actually been having better luck over the last couple of days. The biggest part of my problem is that there rarely seems to be anyone in my country playing. It's weird because I believe that the game sold well in Australia.

    But at least now I'm getting a fairly consistant connection of 2-3 bars with players in Asia and the U.S.

    But I realise my connection issues aren't the games fault, it's purely our crap internet in Aus.

  • Timing takes practice. I still have problems just pressing attacks, like Alpha's stabbing move. I hate timing things like that..

  • Can you block critical edge? I'v been able to block sometimes, but it mostly connects.

  • The Just guard is a good defensive tactic. However, whenever there is a slight lag it makes it obsolete. Guard Impact is good for more so mid-air attacks. Rebound gives you a Major advantage. Just guarding is a little difficult to use online play.

  • Obviously you find Just Guard to be a viable defensive option. I honestly don't see how you would use it at all. My best Soul Calibur buddy and I (and we're pretty experienced with Soul Calibur) sat in practice and tried over and over again to catch even the most simplistically-timed moves, and we couldn't actually succeed one time out of a hundred, the timing is so strict.

    Is there something we're missing, or do we just suck that bad?

  • @TheFlimsyman Glad I'm not the only one. I was in training for a solid ten minutes and only just guarded once out of probably 100 attempts.

  • @TheFlimsyman its not as simple to get the hang of because it requires precise timing, you just got to pay more attention to the right than you do left, I tried it and got 3 in a row after a few trys, if mastered its extremely devastating in matches.

  • Hey Aris, if I may offer a small criticism: it seems you're in need of practice when it comes to reading the script off the paper/screen or whatever. However, I personally think that in your next professional style video you'd be better off "winging it" while keeping the basic framework (all points to be dictated) in mind, like you seem to do in your reviews and podcasts, because you seem to have a knack for public speaking+articulating key points in that ..." spontaneous" fashion.

  • Just practicing this with nightmare. it is actually not too hard if you get the timing down. example i only got nightmare's (down back, B) and i know when to pull the just guard. Now for all of his attacks and the rest of the cast. :P

  • Not to mention ivy cant control her sword anymore but she's like sc2 which is weird. Everybody now has like 5 move on there move sheet (Exaggeration), and unlike sc2 sometime's side stepping (which they glorified) don't help. i watch 1 vid on Team soul and found that to diffrenent teams made 1&2 vs 3&4(the weaklings) but on this one they combined (yea like the first team really needed help..........

  • Well done Project Soul, you're systematically ruining one of the few remaining good fighting games out there. If you block successfully you're punished and now performing guard impacts has now become pointless. I like change as much as the next guy but not when it ruins things. Defence is just as skillful as offence but you're cheapening the skill it takes by ruining great SC features such as guard impacts. I'll have to accept the fact that you lost it after SC3.

  • So, in Soul Calibur 4 they went out of their way to punish people who are good at the skill of blocking, now they're punishing the people who are good at the skill of parrying (guard impact)? Are they determined to drive away all of their fans or something? I'll never guard impact on SCV because it's just not worth it, they might as well have removed it all together. Why must they ruin good aspects instead improving them? ARGH!

  • I practiced this for more than an hour, not once did I get a just guard. I feel as if they made the timing 1 frame long. How the heck do you do it?

  • I just discovered that you can P-link your G-input. If you P-link A+B+G out of a regular G you'll get double the inputs without your character performing a move. This effectively doubles your timing window. Never thought I'd say this but:

    Dont know what type of controller you're using (I use a TE stick) but it might be that you're not performing the P-link correctly. Check your inputs in other games to see if you're correctly P-linking. Dont know what else could be causing it.

  • @origindirewolf Basicly you press (at least) 2 buttons in rapid succession. You hit the 2 buttons at almost the same time. The cpu will register the first button press twice instead of once if you do it right.

  • @aK1baby I played probably 50 fights and HAVE noticed that attacks can clash with one another.

  • GI parries high and low and always give you frame advantage, so it won't be obsolete.

  • Now that I know the basics, its just practicing on different characters against different commonly used moves of different characters lol. I actually just just guarded an unblockable 1B from yoshimitsu! Hope this helps somebody!!!!

  • Ok I finally figured this out. The input does need to be super fast. Basically your blocking shield or weapon needs to be in place to block via a very fast button press and release right as the weapon is about to hit you. For example in order to block yoshimitsu's standing BB attack with patroklos you actually need to tap block before yoshimitsu ever swings his sword... which is... hard to do. but predictable fighters and spammers will now have there asses lit up by an experienced player!

  • I went into practice mode and tried this so many thousand times and it isn't working. What is fuzzy guard, and there's a patch? Will it become possible once it's fixed?

  • Just frames a tough enough when you're attacking. Having to time them with an opponent's attack is just too much. Even in the examples in this video are done in reaction to slow, drawn out attacks. It'll be interesting to see if even the pros are good enough to use them on a regular basis. Had SC5 not gone and fucked up guard impacts it could have been one of the best games in the series.

  • Can I suggest a tutorial teaching Tekken/SF players how to play SC? If you show them the similarities between SC and other games, and what stuff they can 'bring' to SC...maybe that will help.

  • Now that I've gotten a chance to practice this myself, it's a lot different feel than how I'd figure it'd be. It feels like you need to hit guard way early for it to work. It's has roughly the same window as a GI, but rather than having those five frames sit somewhere in the middle of when the attack hits you, they're almost all at the beginning. You need to hit and release G fast and about 4 or so frames away from contact.

  • @rustyrayz1 im getting that too its really hard to time and i was a pro at guard impact. it does require stricter timing. the gi uses meter but its safer in my opinion. the window is bigger. hopefully after much practice it will become 2nd nature. as of now, man its hard to do.

  • @Hyrca youll think twice when using this(just guard) online thats all i can say. it takes ALOT of practice and the timing is like virtua fighter timing. HARD. its free to do, but if you miss, you are gonna be wasted. the meter sucking guard impact is alot safer. its a trade off. i think only pros will use this online.

  • Yeah GI just takes the guess work out of mixup options. Though if you make a correct read with a Just Guard then you can punish instead of just stopping rushdown.

  • @blackdain But GI punishes too! It's guaranteed damage with a critical edge as well as when your opponent doesn't have meter to burn. And even when you think they will GI back you can use mind games to bait a missed GI and punish.
