  • this very helpful sir monkey lord^^ thnk you

  • this guy looks into the camera when hes shredding like hes a boss, but he isnt.

  • do i need to soften my picking?? since you said on lesson 1 hold your b\pick softly i dont know if the picking should also be soft thank you

  • Hey Rob I can speed pick pretty fast on one string but I'm having trouble speed picking from one string to another. Can you recommend any exercises or techniques to help me solve that??

  • @Tomastheskater Search youtube for "Paul Gilbert Alternate Picking Lesson." PG has a few great lessons that cover moving from string to string, and his playing is both fast and clean.

  • My left hand fingers especially pinky is more of a prob, lol.

  • Hey, great lesson, I was wondering though - which is used as a pivot point? Your wrist, palm or fingers?

  • Is it poor technique to speed pick with your thumb over the top of the neck? or would you recommend keeping your thumb strictly behind the neck at all times when speed picking?

  • Any tips on speeding up and increasing the cleanliness of trills between the ring and little fingers? I've been doing it for years but I'm not sure if it's any better.

  • your guitar is dropped right?? its in D# right??

  • well, my left hand his fast and my right hand is fast, but not together...

  • @ChromeFang Then you have to practice syncing them, play some alternate picking licks that require both hands. Start REALLY slow if you have to and get comfortable with them, then when you can play them relaxed, speed up a notch. :)

  • how do you break through the plateau? where your brain simply won't let you play faster?

  • @Rhamsody I think it's good to break down the piece into smaller chunks, even just 2 or 3 notes repetitively and work on speed 'til happy. Then work on another 2 or 3 notes 'til happy and then tie the 2 sections together 'til it's a fast 6 notes or how ever many the 2 chunks make.

  • @Rhamsody Do something different. Don't beat a dead horse, find a new one to kill.

  • 3 peoples can't hold a pick

  • chappers - do red bear picks feel vastly different to normal picks?

  • DON'T FORGET METRONOME!!!!! Practicing without some sort of beat, no one will want to play with you.

  • what pick thickness would you recomend ???

  • I like your playing, thanks for the lesson, it's really helpful ;]

  • Why pick up for the first note? :S confused

  • @EpicSkatinDrummerGuy Probably because it is easier to jump to second string if you are going to do alternate picking/ legato etc.

  • An excersize wjich is "BOTH" fun exciting, and sounds great? lol. good video though, thanks.

  • hey do u have any tutorials for song/solo writing?

  • Part 1 and 2 of this is the best picking lesson on youtube i think, really helpfull if you wanna push your picking technique.

  • The noise of his pick is really annoying.

  • @Pow3rus So true! Most of my influences are horn players like Michael Brecker. I think the goal is to play scales, intervals, and arpeggios quickly, but also with no extranneous noise. He has a great muting technique and there's no unwanted string noise, but the sound of the pick scraping is maddening. When Holdsworth plays, all you hear is the notes he wants you to hear!

  • Ooowwwwww my pinky!! :(

  • You start by picking up? Is that the better route rather than starting down?

  • is it bad technique to anchor your ring and pinky finger on the face of the guitar?

  • @pcnation11 I think so dude, if they are anchored there them you are effectively sacrificing two fingers which could be used for muting and plucking in a hybrid style ;-)

  • @RobChappers i always thought that but so many players like M.A.B for example say they can only pick that fast by anchoring, where as whenever i try to do it it feels wrong and uncomfortable, i reckon it has something to do with hand size or something.

  • @RobChappers that crazy fast bastard whats his name (Michael Angelo Batio) anchors his fingers on the bottom of the pickups. and he kinda knows what he's doing. He's kinda fast...lol I don't do it but it clearly works for Batio.

  • @skolnick14 True, although batio said in a lesson himself that his picking style is a bit unorthodox. But like he said, "If it works and don´t hurt or limit you, why not?". As long as your relaxed, not limited by your style and are able to play accuretely i don´t see the point why not.

  • another lesson i learned here is to always turn off the volume when not picking....

  • You are the best man!

  • Hey there chap, fantastic vid! Only thing is that there's no mention of you tuning to Eb! Fantastic player though!

  • These vids even help a seasoned (haha, not self-proclaimed) player to remember many things to keep in mind while playing one might forget. We do tend to get lazy, as we are mere mortals.

  • are you in standar tuning?

  • Ur a genius! Thanks for the lesson!

  • Great vids; succinct, economical (:D), explanations. What are your opinions on economy of left hand motions too? 4th (pinky/little) finger in particular...

  • Question that I REALLY want answered, I just noticed that I hold my pick slightly different than most people. Instead of holding the pick between just my thumb and index, I hold it between my thumb and index, and my middle finger right beside my index, is this wrong? Cause when I use JUST my index I feel like I'll drop it and I don't feel as comfterable.

  • @HitaroX It is just bad technique, we all used to do that when we first began.

  • more like, Amb

  • Great vid, got the basics of it the speed etc, but when it comes to crossing over to the next strings, that's when it gets dodgy

  • darn perfect pitch...it's confusing to me when you say Am when you're tuned a half step down! even if you are using the Am scale, haha

  • Hey Rob, amazing lick! I have been practising the lick for 2 days now and it still isn't as fast as you play it, it's pretty fast though. So shall i keep on practising or could i be doing something wrong?

  • -snickers- you said fingering several times.

I subscribed btw, forgive my clearly mature mind.

  • after practicing this it was impossible to play any string skipping type licks lol

  • Thanks for doing these lessons Rob!

  • you should do a vid of you just showing off

  • Thanks Rob! Are you using the orange at the end of the clip where you're jamming?

  • Can you please anwser this:

How long did it take you to get to this speed?

    How long did you practise?????

    Btw great lesson :)

    thx

  • lol @ how you turn volume down xD

  • dude im realy struggling to get my little finger to work like the others, chords/scales etc are fine but when i solo my little finger just fails, got any tips?

  • Great lesson! What kind of PRS is that?

  • hey thanks for these great videos, with alot of these i find it 200% easier to start on a downpick and end up pick and i canplay it alot faster as starting on up for me confuses me and feels unnatural at the moment(i will learn starting on up pick :) ). i was wondering if its fine if it really matters if u start on down or up pick?

  • I practice and I practice but I just can't play fast. Anyone help me!

  • thanks. very useful info. btw, i really like for amp. lol

  • plz gimme that PRS ;////

    you`re awesome

  • Bloody good you are. Wish you had a 24 hour Sky TV channel mate.

  • @Bonkymonk

I'd be subscribed to that !

  • Thank you so much for posting this videos! It's the first really useful speed picking lessons I've seen on the web. Thank you so so much. Now I can shred this scale. ;D

  • have you ever tried playing horn lines on the guitar? I.e. Coltrane's "giant steps"? Now THAT is a true test of technique!

  • Hi Rob. Quick terminology question for you.

Why is reverse minor what I would consider minor, and vice versa?

I actually had a conversation earlier today about the difference between flat/natural second, 3 note minor shapes, and this topic just boggles me.

Also..your picking technique is revolutionary for me because I've been bogged down with index finger joint pain for ages and I didn't know it was because I was strangling the pick!

Thank you! Your modal videos are brilliant too.

  • ahh that's not easy to do with a sprained pinky...

  • what is the name of the scale you are using?

  • i love that guiyar is it an opeth one

  • awesome lesson

  • dude, you are an amazing guitarist.

  • Very helpful! Thanks :)

  • love that prs

i bet it cost you thousands

  • metronome!!!

  • Good teacher, good technique Ideas, cool ascent, but, uh, I'm still faster. Check out my bands vids. We're called "Cemetentiary". We're a thrash metal band. Look us up on youtube, The videos were from an open mic night with pretty much no sound system, so the balence between the instruments was pretty bad, but check us out anyway.

  • Can I have your accent?

  • @GarrettX1991 We all want his accent Mate :- D

  • wow that lesson is really helpful =) you are a really good teacher !

i just began with speed playing and it's pretty hard ... especially my annoying pinky ... it's always cramping when i try exercises like that =/

but i will go on ...

  • I have never learned to play guitar, but would like to learn how to shred. Would you think it would be hard for my to learn this?

  • @redandbluebeater er... yes very hard, start with the basics and work ur way up, no one just picks up a guitar and shreds man! it takes years of hard work

  • Rob, thanks. Seriously, words can't say how much your videos have helped.

I'm a bit of a shredder myself (though I'm not a very technical guy) and this video has helped me become a lot more efficient and proficient with my picking, which was always my weak hand.

Your modes videos were also a massive help, as was the major scale construct. I didn't understand any of that before I watched your videos, but I actually understand it fully now. Something my music teacher couldn't do.

  • thanks man! the tip about loosly picking really helped, im going to show this to some of my mates :)

  • wow, thank you, this really work, thanks a lot :D

  • I will definatley say that I have never seen anyone turn a guitar down as fast as this guy.

  • finnaly a guy who talks sense , im getting better now , faster and faster , the sweet sound of shreding a guitar

  • by the time i make it to the end of the riff my fretting hand tires out and slows down my picking is exellant but i dont have enough endurance any suggestions???

  • keep jerkin my friend, keep jerkin

  • Just keep practicing it, you are just using muscles you are not used to using and they tire out... after time your endurance will get stronger. TRUST ME!!

  • Really good job, and I don't say that often when it comes to guitar. This guy actually knows what he's talking about!

  • he has great technique. lots of people seem to forget that technique isn't just speed.

  • @Steve128967 yeaah ^^

  • @Steve128967 Wanna get faster? Try playing it slower. :) I love telling that to ppl. Confuses the crap out of em.

  • wow, the first speed picking lessons which actually helped

  • Oh shit! when i tried it my string snapped

  • awesome lesson!

  • Best picking lesson online!

  • im still having trouble using just my wrist and fingers. i think im using my elbow because my forearm is moving a little bit. when tremolo picking i notice i can't pick fast enough with pivoting my fingers or using my wrist so my body makes me use me forearm to go faster...any suggestions to help me out with this habit or is it ok?

  • one thing he stresses in his other Beginner's Lessons, which is 100% right, is to be very sure your whole body is relaxed. Sounds like you have tension; we all have to fight that. Helps to have some one observe you to detect tension too

  • @sk8monster112 U just have to make sure you're completely relaxed. It may feel like you're going faster by moving your elbow, but it usually slows you down. Just practice using only your wrist slowly, and then just steadily build up you speed.

  • Thanks man!! Really awesome vid!

  • Cheers Rob!! Really helpful! Now I can do my job properly in the band!! Still got a lot of work to do, but this was a great help! Thanks again! XD

  • prs

  • Is that a PRS or Schecter? ;p

  • @Metalist2150

    prs

  • Thanks.. ;D

  • VEry helpful sir..thanks!

  • hey Darkdevil1585, if ur so fucking brilliant why were u looking at lessons u douche knob..

  • is it wrong to start with a down stroke?

  • I find it hard synching my left hand with my right at any sort of speed :(

  • @wesmatron Slow it down and play with a metronome. Gradually raise the speed of the click.

  • Cool little pattern. I'll definatly use this in my improvisation. Thanks for putting this vid up. You should post a vid on other techniques.

  • Chappers = Beast of a Guitarist

  • hell yeah

  • your a douch it simon cowl plays guitar

    skwis would slap yous

  • Thanks for taking the time to put this out there.

  • just a thought but you are tuned down a half step aren't you...

took me a sec to figure out why things wernt sounding right. lol

  • Great video Rob.

Just wondering if you have your rockerverb on low/high output damping?

  • good vid really helped me, thanks monke lord, u rock/give peope like me 74% of their gda of win.

  • Schecter :)

  • thats a prs

  • Schecters are garbage.

  • why that?

(i think I was wrong, its a PRS)

    inlay´s looked like gothic crosses.

  • Yeah its a prs. No offense dude i was just messin with you. They're good learning guitar but they're really actually poorly made. The trus rod in them are crap and they dont intonize very well. Mainly cause of what its made out of. I have a prs and they're the best by far. Im sure Chappers would agree or agree to disagree that they're great guitars.

  • @Walterpayton115 thats a PRS not a schecter

and schecters are very good guitars. their 7 strings are legendary

  • @vlogtarist I know i was telling the kid below me that schecters are poorly made (most of them) Of course the more expensive ones will be better made. I own a PRS i know what they look like.

  • aah, my bad

  • @vlogtarist All good buddy.

  • Great teacher thanks Rob.

  • Really good player and really good teacher, wish you could be mine ;-)

  • yours in what way ?? ooo errr

  • i used to pick from the elbow, i still tend to, i found out how hard it was to pick fast i.e playing thrash, standing up with the guitar low, which is how i need it if i want to be cool :D

So i just started standing up with my guitar with strap low and forcing my self to pick slowly from the wrist using stuff like this, just making little patterns out of scales on one string. It also helped me with just down picking for playing slower rhythm

  • The problem I have, is that when i'm going alternating picking, and I have to travel across to another string, and I have to start with an upstroke. it stuffs me up....

  • Use Economy Picking Technique. its like Sweeping sorta

  • Really good lesson!

I noticed in my own playing that I pick using my elbow. Are there any exercises or things I can do to try and get habit of picking just with finger movements like you were explaining (in the first part of the lesson)?

    Thanks

  • Your remind me of Jeff Walker from Carcass haha. Good video.

  • Hi thr Rob...i was wondering why you started with an up stroke?

  • Yay for Yngwie! Yay for Chappers!

  • Hey Rob! Weren't you supposed to play more with the LTD's and the ESP's?

  • PRS forever!

  • It has been engraved into my soul, I MUST meet you before my life is over!!! You're so awesome!!!

  • Ha ha.. bless you mate! I'm sure we will meet at some point, I am just a dude like you :-)

  • Another great video, Rob.

    Keep it up, man.

  • Thanks for the the vid Chappers! :D

Ever notice that every guitar teacher always ends the last note with vibrato? lol

  • Dude, most guitar players end most notes with vibrato.

  • Well Rob, you really are one of those assholes that's annoyingly good! ;-) Ha ha, seriously, nice playing, and nice tuition too. Great tone too, even if you're not using fender and marshall!!

  • She says she hates it but my wife is actually impressed with me sitting practicing this. Good lad Rob.

  • This is another video built of the finest mountain WIN!

  • Chappers, you are by far my favourite teacher on youtube! Complete legend! :)

  • Great excercice for alternate picking! And great teacher by the way!

  • Thanks mate! :-)

  • i've finally figured out how to mute those unwanted open-strings resonating all over the place! though i think i do it with the heel of my hand, not my thumb. is that technique a "what ever works for you" kind of deal?

  • Do you drink Tea or Coffee?

  • Both ;)

  • Lots of coffee (Doug Egberts)... and some Earl Grey!

  • and lots of tea in a huge cup!

  • thanks for this lesson, was a great help

    ALL HAIL CHAPPERS!!

  • good video man, this is 1 of the first shreddy licks I ever learned because I couldnt move to other strings very good. The same concept only I was doing all hammers and pulls instead of picking every note

  • playing perfect like all vids. new hair - perfect :) you look more metal-friendly people. all the time smiled guitarist :D

  • Hey Rob!

    Love the new videos!

I've been practicing this pattern like you asked (I'm a good little monkey peasant), but I have to go down a half step for each note. I suppose this means you're in Eb? Just thought it sounded odd, because I'm in E standard. :P

  • Yes that is correct sir, sorry should have mentioned I am generally in Eb with 11 guage strings.

  • Ah great, thanks!

    Yay I learned something! :)

  • MONKRY LORD COMMENTED FIRST! nice man

  • Monkry Lord? Is that the Monkey Lord's spelling challenged brother?

  • Ha ha.. Ironically I am very spelling challenged, I have very actute dyslexia... And I can't remember numbers, which is a challenge sometimes.

  • so long as you are having lots of fnu Rob , dyslexia doesnt matter
