Hey Rob I can speed pick pretty fast on one string but I'm having trouble speed picking from one string to another. Can you recommend any exercises or techniques to help me solve that??
@Tomastheskater Search youtube for "Paul Gilbert Alternate Picking Lesson." PG has a few great lessons that cover moving from string to string, and his playing is both fast and clean.
Is it poor technique to speed pick with your thumb over the top of the neck? or would you recommend keeping your thumb strictly behind the neck at all times when speed picking?
Any tips on speeding up and increasing the cleanliness of trills between the ring and little fingers? I've been doing it for years but I'm not sure if it's any better.
@ChromeFang Then you have to practice syncing them, play some alternate picking licks that require both hands. Start REALLY slow if you have to and get comfortable with them, then when you can play them relaxed, speed up a notch. :)
@Rhamsody I think it's good to break down the piece into smaller chunks, even just 2 or 3 notes repetitively and work on speed 'til happy. Then work on another 2 or 3 notes 'til happy and then tie the 2 sections together 'til it's a fast 6 notes or how ever many the 2 chunks make.
@Pow3rus So true! Most of my influences are horn players like Michael Brecker. I think the goal is to play scales, intervals, and arpeggios quickly, but also with no extranneous noise. He has a great muting technique and there's no unwanted string noise, but the sound of the pick scraping is maddening. When Holdsworth plays, all you hear is the notes he wants you to hear!
@pcnation11 I think so dude, if they are anchored there them you are effectively sacrificing two fingers which could be used for muting and plucking in a hybrid style ;-)
@RobChappers i always thought that but so many players like M.A.B for example say they can only pick that fast by anchoring, where as whenever i try to do it it feels wrong and uncomfortable, i reckon it has something to do with hand size or something.
@RobChappers that crazy fast bastard whats his name (Michael Angelo Batio) anchors his fingers on the bottom of the pickups. and he kinda knows what he's doing. He's kinda fast...lol I don't do it but it clearly works for Batio.
@skolnick14 True, although batio said in a lesson himself that his picking style is a bit unorthodox. But like he said, "If it works and don´t hurt or limit you, why not?". As long as your relaxed, not limited by your style and are able to play accuretely i don´t see the point why not.
These vids even help a seasoned (haha, not self-proclaimed) player to remember many things to keep in mind while playing one might forget. We do tend to get lazy, as we are mere mortals.
Great vids; succinct, economical (:D), explanations. What are your opinions on economy of left hand motions too? 4th (pinky/little) finger in particular...
Question that I REALLY want answered, I just noticed that I hold my pick slightly different than most people. Instead of holding the pick between just my thumb and index, I hold it between my thumb and index, and my middle finger right beside my index, is this wrong? Cause when I use JUST my index I feel like I'll drop it and I don't feel as comfterable.
Hey Rob, amazing lick! I have been practising the lick for 2 days now and it still isn't as fast as you play it, it's pretty fast though. So shall i keep on practising or could i be doing something wrong?
dude im realy struggling to get my little finger to work like the others, chords/scales etc are fine but when i solo my little finger just fails, got any tips?
hey thanks for these great videos, with alot of these i find it 200% easier to start on a downpick and end up pick and i canplay it alot faster as starting on up for me confuses me and feels unnatural at the moment(i will learn starting on up pick :) ). i was wondering if its fine if it really matters if u start on down or up pick?
Thank you so much for posting this videos! It's the first really useful speed picking lessons I've seen on the web. Thank you so so much. Now I can shred this scale. ;D
Why is reverse minor what I would consider minor, and vice versa?
I actually had a conversation earlier today about the difference between flat/natural second, 3 note minor shapes, and this topic just boggles me.
Also..your picking technique is revolutionary for me because I've been bogged down with index finger joint pain for ages and I didn't know it was because I was strangling the pick!
Good teacher, good technique Ideas, cool ascent, but, uh, I'm still faster. Check out my bands vids. We're called "Cemetentiary". We're a thrash metal band. Look us up on youtube, The videos were from an open mic night with pretty much no sound system, so the balence between the instruments was pretty bad, but check us out anyway.
@redandbluebeater er... yes very hard, start with the basics and work ur way up, no one just picks up a guitar and shreds man! it takes years of hard work
Rob, thanks. Seriously, words can't say how much your videos have helped.
I'm a bit of a shredder myself (though I'm not a very technical guy) and this video has helped me become a lot more efficient and proficient with my picking, which was always my weak hand.
Your modes videos were also a massive help, as was the major scale construct. I didn't understand any of that before I watched your videos, but I actually understand it fully now. Something my music teacher couldn't do.
by the time i make it to the end of the riff my fretting hand tires out and slows down my picking is exellant but i dont have enough endurance any suggestions???

im still having trouble using just my wrist and fingers. i think im using my elbow because my forearm is moving a little bit. when tremolo picking i notice i can't pick fast enough with pivoting my fingers or using my wrist so my body makes me use me forearm to go faster...any suggestions to help me out with this habit or is it ok?
one thing he stresses in his other Beginner's Lessons, which is 100% right, is to be very sure your whole body is relaxed. Sounds like you have tension; we all have to fight that. Helps to have some one observe you to detect tension too
@sk8monster112 U just have to make sure you're completely relaxed. It may feel like you're going faster by moving your elbow, but it usually slows you down. Just practice using only your wrist slowly, and then just steadily build up you speed.
Yeah its a prs. No offense dude i was just messin with you. They're good learning guitar but they're really actually poorly made. The trus rod in them are crap and they dont intonize very well. good video man, this is 1 of the first shreddy licks I ever learned because I couldnt move to other strings very good. The same concept only I was doing all hammers and pulls instead of picking every note
I've been practicing this pattern like you asked (I'm a good little monkey peasant), but I have to go down a half step for each note. I suppose this means you're in Eb? Just thought it sounded odd, because I'm in E standard. :P
this very helpful sir monkey lord^^ thnk you

good video man, this is 1 of the first shreddy licks I ever learned because I couldnt move to other strings very good. The same concept only I was doing all hammers and pulls instead of picking every note

Hey Rob!
Love the new videos!
I've been practicing this pattern like you asked (I'm a good little monkey peasant), but I have to go down a half step for each note. I suppose this means you're in Eb? Just thought it sounded odd, because I'm in E standard. :P

Yes that is correct sir, sorry should have mentioned I am generally in Eb with 11 guage strings.

Ha ha.. Ironically I am very spelling challenged, I have very actute dyslexia... And I can't remember numbers, which is a challenge sometimes.
